My 4 y o DD was bitten by a dog today. Advice on what to do next please.

You do need to report it I am afraid. It is an awkward situation for you but the bottom line is the Dog has bitten a child and may do worse to another if you let it go.

I am rather appalled the owner has not accepted the seriousness of this. This makes me feel that the Dog will go on to do worse.

Poor DD YorkieGirl but it is important to report it as next time, the dog might not just be content with a couple of bites like it did today.

if the dog bites it should not be off the lead in the 'care' of a child. sorry your DD got bitten and i hope the ownsers get a strong warning

I think you are right to report it.

Poor dd - it's horrible. Ds2 has been pounced on by dogs before (thankfully not bitten) once when he was only 2 and it was terrifying.

Oh your poor dd2 YG. Hope she gets over it OK and is not too traumatised.

My two have always been quite wary of dogs depsite never having been bitten. I hope she recovers quickly.

You were right to report this. I was bitten by a neighbours golden retriever when I was about 8yo and I can still remember the fright I got. I still have a very small scar on my nose.

The dog had snapped at the neighbours DC before but this was the first time that he had gone for someone outside of the family.

Our neighbours "sent the dog to a live on a farm". I think I was about 15yo before I realised that this was a euphanism for the dog being put down. They said that they could not risk the dog biting anyone else.

It is not your fault or your DD's fault if the dog has to be put down. It is the fault of the dog owners who let a dog that bites out unsupervised.

Hope your DD is ok.

A 9 year old is not capable of being "in control" of a dog, and therefore the dog was out of control and it could have been a lot worse. I think reporting it is definitely the right thing to do, if only so that the owner is made to realise that she has a responsibility to keep her pet under control.

FWIW at 5 months it sounds like the owners have just failed miserably to get the dog out of the nipping/chewing/mouthing habit that every puppy goes through. It doesn't sound like a malicious thing on the dog's part. But the owners definitely need a shake-up.

Hope your DD is feeling better soon. I hope it doesn't make her frightened of dogs

when my dd was bitten a few months ago the police told me if it was a first incident the owner may just have to take measures such as keeping the dog muzzled when out etc. My dd was bitten by an alsation type dog on a lead and will have permenant scars.

All wrong you say the owner was aware that the dog was biting? That is soo bad that they left their 9yo alone with the dog never mind some elses 4 yo with it!!!

It is a 20 week old puppy, it will chew everything it comes across - remember your teething baby?

I am sympathetic to your plight, the puppy should be supervised by an adult. Puppy bites hurt as young dogs have teeth like needles but there is no way this dog should be put down. There is a huge difference between an adult dog and a puppy.

Fwiw I would not leave my very sensible 8.5 yr old unsupervised with a strange dog, dogs are not toys and behave unpredictably.

It is the responsibility of the owners to make sure that their dog is under control. And in charge of a 9 year old is NOT under control.

And a 5 month old dog should be old enough not to bite in this way. It has obviously been badly/not trained. Maybe a word from the police will ensure that the owners do something about looking after their dog properly. And that includes teaching it how to behave.

Yorkie, you should go to the police ASAP. Puppies can nip, but this sounds like more than a nip. And in any case, the dog should not have been out in public, off a lead, where it could even nip someone, let alone actually bite.
Yes, the owners say they are trying to train it, but the dog should not have been out loose.
Even if all the police do is 'have a word' with the owners, it may be enough to stop it happening again, or worse.
I hope your DD is alright and hope that this doesn't give her a phobia of dogs.
Let us know what happens, and do go to the police ASAP.

You are right, its not your fault your dd was bitten. Its the dog owners fault.
