Jehovah’s witnesses at the door, what do you say?

I believe in god but not from same pov as Jehovah?s witnesses. I have no complaints about people choosing to follow this religion, I think it?s everyone?s right to make their own choices. Also I?ve nothing against Jehovah?s witnesses as people, we had some lovely family friends once who were Jehovah?s witnesses (although they have now moved away). But I?m not really very keen discussing these issues at the door with a complete stranger. Had a lady come round today (very nice polite lady) who was ?spreading the word? I did what I normally do in this situation which was be polite and have a short conversation with her about the issue in her magazine (avoiding talking about it from a religious pov but just life in general) and then said goodbye. My mum on the other hand is quite rude to them and tells them to go away quite abruptly. It?s really not in my nature to be rude but I?m worried that by engaging in conversation in this way I?m maybe misleading them into thinking I might convert and join them in their religion.
What do other people say?

Dictionary definition of cult:-

A religion or religious sect generally considered to be extremist or false, with its followers often living in an unconventional manner under the guidance of an authoritarian, charismatic leader.

The followers of such a religion or sect.
A system or community of religious worship and ritual.

The formal means of expressing religious reverence; religious ceremony and ritual.
A usually nonscientific method or regimen claimed by its originator to have exclusive or exceptional power in curing a particular disease.

Jehovah's Witnesses are not a cult.

Misdee do JW followers believe as Christians do that Satan is real? and second that the bible intimates in revelations that satans "mark" will be issued on the hand or forehead?

misdee · 27/01/2005 16:02

satan does exsist in JW eyes. satan and his followers (bad angels/devils) were exhiled from heaven.

there is abook which the JW use, which focus' soley on the book of Revelations and is actually a very good book and explains a lot.

lowcalCOD · 27/01/2005 16:02

how differnt are htey to plymuth brethren>

sparklymieow · 27/01/2005 16:03

JW are NOT a cult!! Its a religion like any other!

misdee · 27/01/2005 16:03

and i dont think microchipping is the mark of satan, and i dont think many JW's would do either.

sparklymieow · 27/01/2005 16:07

To carifity, JW believe in God, jesus and Satan. They believe that in 1914 satan and his demons were exiled out of the heavens. They believe that 144,00 will be by Jesus' side in heaven and these "chosen ones" do know they are chosen (don't ask me how?) and the rest will live in pardise on earth.
I think there is a lot of confusion with JW and their religion to an outsider

fuzzywuzzy · 27/01/2005 16:09

1914 as recent as that??

sparklymieow · 27/01/2005 16:10

yes, and if you think about it, what happened in 1914?

misdee · 27/01/2005 16:11

WW1.

fuzzywuzzy · 27/01/2005 16:12

satan and his followers caused WW1??

misdee · 27/01/2005 16:12

i dunno. i aint satan

sparklymieow · 27/01/2005 16:13

it was the start of downfall of mankind. I ain't a JW now, but as I have said before, many things actually add up with the religion.

misdee · 27/01/2005 16:14

A lot of it makes sense to me, but same as mieow i dont have time for religion in my life atm. maybe in a few years i can devote time to religion.

sparklymieow · 27/01/2005 16:16

oh what would mum and dad say if they saw this misdee??

Ameriscot2005 · 27/01/2005 16:17

How about Alan Gomes' definition:

A cult of Christianity is a group of people, which claiming to be Christian, embraces a particular doctrine system taught by an individual leader, group of leaders, or organization, which (system) denies (either explicitly or implicitly) one or more of the central doctrines of the Christian Faith as taught in the sixty-six books of the Bible.

misdee · 27/01/2005 16:17

they'd be setting up a study for us!!!

sparklymieow · 27/01/2005 16:19

but ain't that most religions then??

sparklymieow · 27/01/2005 16:21

I am actually shocked that this thread hasn't turned into a slanging match. Its nice that poeple are listening to the JWs side and dissussing it without a HUGE fight!

SoupDragon · 27/01/2005 16:24

Is JW a recent religeon then? Thinking about Satan & co being exiled in 1914. I am completely ignorant but I assumed satan was out of heaven well before that. fallen angels and all that.

sparklymieow · 27/01/2005 16:26

Oh no, they are about before that, I think! I think they had a different name before.

SoupDragon · 27/01/2005 16:28

So, I wonder if they said Satan would be exiled in 1914 before WW1 or if it was vaguer than that and WW! was a convenient evil event.

sparklymieow · 27/01/2005 16:29

The book of Revelations in teh bible actually predicted these things, andf things that haven't happened yet. The whole of Revelations is very deep and hard to get to grips with TBH

pickledonion · 27/01/2005 16:30

If anything i think this thread has been educational - as someone who is of non believer i find it quite intersting.

Also who ever comes to my door - i always try and be polite wether they calling for religion or selling after all you know one day you could be standing on there door step for reason.
