Jehovah’s witnesses at the door, what do you say?

I believe in god but not from same pov as Jehovah?s witnesses. I have no complaints about people choosing to follow this religion, I think it?s everyone?s right to make their own choices. Also I?ve nothing against Jehovah?s witnesses as people, we had some lovely family friends once who were Jehovah?s witnesses (although they have now moved away). But I?m not really very keen discussing these issues at the door with a complete stranger. Had a lady come round today (very nice polite lady) who was ?spreading the word? I did what I normally do in this situation which was be polite and have a short conversation with her about the issue in her magazine (avoiding talking about it from a religious pov but just life in general) and then said goodbye. My mum on the other hand is quite rude to them and tells them to go away quite abruptly. It?s really not in my nature to be rude but I?m worried that by engaging in conversation in this way I?m maybe misleading them into thinking I might convert and join them in their religion.
What do other people say?

but the bible the JW says in Gods name is Jehovah, most bible have removed that and put that Gods name is God. But in every bible there is one verse that said "and they will all know that my name is Jehovah" I can't remember the verse itself (been a long time) but I am sure that one of the JW will tell us it.

Demented · 27/01/2005 16:32

JW's don't deny anything that is written in the Bible so they are still not a cult by that definition either.

Ameriscot2005 · 27/01/2005 16:33

JW was officially founded by Charles Taze Russell in 1884 as the Zion's Watch Tower and Tract Society. It changed its name to JW in 1931.

Ameriscot2005 · 27/01/2005 16:33

What Bible would that be, Demented?

SoupDragon · 27/01/2005 16:33

mieow, I'm just kind of musing that 1914 seems a very exact date to come up with given that Revalations was written... I don't know how long ago and calendars etc have changed. Very interesting though.

Should point out here that I'm agnostic and therefore kind of sceptical about the bible being hard fact. My personal opinion.

Demented · 27/01/2005 16:38

There is a lot of rubbish on the net about JWs BTW.

The only official website is here . Should provide a lot of answers to questions.

Titania · 27/01/2005 16:39

I have nothing against JWs. At the end of the day they are as entitled to their beliefs as anyone else on this planet. But for me, I have no faith. I haven't had for 10 years now. Nothing will ever change that. My children have not been christened purely because I think it would be entirely hypocritical of me. But at the end of the day if my children come to me of their own accord in a few years time when they are able enough to make up their own minds and ask to be christened then fair enough. If a JW comes to my door then I say 'I'm sorry. I have a different belief to you. Thank you for the thought though.'

sparklymieow · 27/01/2005 16:40

I know SD I get very confused with the whole thing myself, and its been a long time since I have been to the meetings, I do hear about it all from my parents, but they don't force the issus with me, surely if it was a cult, they wouldn't let the children make their own decisions when they decide it ain't for them. And Jw children aren't baptismed into the religion, you make that decision when you are ready.

Ameriscot2005 · 27/01/2005 16:43

Oh, come on, Demented, you can do better than that.

To me, what makes JWs cultish, is that they masquerage as "Christians" when they are not. They do not believe in the doctrines set forth by the original and undivided church. They were created by a charasmatic leader. They have to "do" things and behave in certain ways in order to be saved, and that you have to be on the inside to be saved (totally contradicting what JC himself said).

sparklymieow · 27/01/2005 16:44

Acxtually, you don't have to be "on the inside" if Jehovah looks into your heart and sees good, or you didn't have the chance (died young, etc etc) JWs believes you maybe saved.

Ameriscot2005 · 27/01/2005 16:48
Shock
sparklymieow · 27/01/2005 16:50

I'm off now before its gets bad on here. At the end of the day (and I have said this to my parents) we actually have no idea which religion is the truth and we can only follow the one that we feel is right.

Demented · 27/01/2005 16:51

I probably can do better than that but I am not going to be drawn into debate on the net I'm afraid. I'm sure you are well aware that we use The New World Translation of the Scriptures.

Ameriscot2005 · 27/01/2005 16:51

Where's the faith in that, Sparkly?

sparklymieow · 27/01/2005 16:52

But I have said I am NOT a JW anymore. I know a lot about it because I was brought up as one.

Demented · 27/01/2005 16:52

My answer was directed to Ameriscot BTW.

sparklymieow · 27/01/2005 16:52

Demented are you a JW? Do you know my parents

Demented · 27/01/2005 16:55

LOL I have officially 'come out'!

We are in Scotland so probably don't know your parents. Although my DH did do a fair amount of travelling looking for Miss Right so you never know ...

sparklymieow · 27/01/2005 16:56

Ameriscot2005 you must feel your religion is the right one, or you wouldn't be here

Ameriscot2005 · 27/01/2005 16:57

And the NWT contracticts much of what is in the bibles used by mainstream Christian churches - those which have grown out of the original and undivided church, those believing in the Apostles' and Nicene creeds.

sparklymieow · 27/01/2005 16:57

wow,I had no idea!! Thats great you came "out" you prolly won't talk to me now knowing I am a bad girl who left

Ameriscot2005 · 27/01/2005 16:57
