Ive had water infections since i was 15 (now 20) and had loads of different antibiotics but none of them have worked. I have been prescribed a different antibiotic today but i need something to take the pain away. Does anyone know what i can take? Paracetamol just make me feel even worse. I desperately need advice!!

Oh god you have my sympathy - water infections are awful.

Antibiotics always work for me but in the short term I drink lots and lots of water to dilute the wee (but don't drink too much, I ended up getting water poisoning once from drinking so much - yes it IS possible!)

I also wipe mysel "down there" with a towel dipped in warm water.

YoungMummyOf1 · 13/06/2008 13:58

Thanks! ill have to try that one branflake81!!

cranberries and cranberry juice are supposed to be good at preventing infection.

YoungMummyOf1 · 13/06/2008 14:04

i drink loads of water and cranberry juice but it doesnt work for me.. It just makes me need the toilet more and it hurts so much!

Youngmummy - have you asked your GP for a hospital referral to see a specialist? Maybe that would help.

YoungMummyOf1 · 13/06/2008 14:34

Yeah i was referred to a specialist last year and had a camera in my bladder to see what the problem was but all they could see was my bladder was very badly inflamed so they gave me antibiotics for 6 months but it didnt work.

Flat memonade or lemon barley water are supposed to do the trick as well - cranberry juice is vile!

Aniyan · 13/06/2008 14:40

I've only had a few water infections but they got extremely bad very very quickly - so you have my sympathy as I know how awful they can be. I was prescribed combined paracetamol & codeine as a painkiller (I think it's called co-codamol) - which was fantastic - but I'm not sure if you can get it over the counter or not.

Hope you feel better soon.

YoungMummyOf1 · 13/06/2008 14:47

I have about 3 packs of co-codamol but i dont take them because they dont work for me.
I shall have to try the barley water. Thanks Twinkie1

heat can help. one of those micro wave wheat bags gives a little temporary relief. You have my sympathy. I go through phases of these and its horrible.

I do find paracetamol works but takes two hours or alternatively ibuprofen. Also someone recommended eating a lot of garlicky food as it is anti bacterial, i haven't tried this yet.

YoungMummyOf1 · 13/06/2008 14:53

Wouldn't eating garlicky food make you sick though? Mind you, anything to get rid of the pain!!

no, can't see why unless you are allergic to garlic. Its a strong anti bacterial.some people eat it raw but maybe try stuff like hummus or stir fries with lots of garlic or miso soup with lightly cooked garlic in it. You could try also taking probiotics to help sort out the balance of good/bad bacteria in your body, more as a long term thing.

I just found this info on a website about using garlic medically at one clove a day.

Cooking with garlic
When used in cooking, crush or cut the garlic finely, then leave for 10 minutes to allow the allicin to fully develop before adding to recipes. Add the garlic about five minutes before the end of cooking - this way you apply just enough heat to convert the allicin into medically active compounds.

DartmoorMama · 13/06/2008 15:03

odourless garlic capsules might be just as good.

YoungMummyOf1 · 13/06/2008 15:06

Thanks DartmoorMama

Where can you get odourless garlic capsules from? any pharmacy?

I have suffered regularly since the same age, my consultant mentioned it might be something to do with becoming sexually active at around the same time (i know it was quite young!) anyway i always get up to wee after sex, oh so romantic. and also my consultant told me you need to alkalise your wee, make it less acidic. he suggested, and it works for me and its the same thing as the barley water, to put half teaspoon of bicarbonate soda in a glass of water. tastes revolting i know. and you probably already know this but to keep drinking, although that's the last thing you want to do when weeing hurts so much.
have you tried the cranberry capsules? juice never worked for me but the capsules did but i had to take them regularly and for a long time. I would def push for a referral to a urologist. i had undiagnosed reflux they think since i was very young and it scarred one of my kidneys. it meant i had recurring infections.
hope that helps. i know that hideous pain.

youknownothingofthecrunch · 13/06/2008 15:15

There's a homeopathic remedy too. I think it's called apis mel. You can get them in most pharmacies I think (I got some from Boots).

Cranberry juice in enormous quantities works for me usually - antibiotics never have.

I feel for you. It really hurts. I always go with never completely emptying your bladder too, this seems to reduce the irritation as the sides don't rub together (but if this goes against any doctor's advice then ignore it)

DartmoorMama · 13/06/2008 15:16

yes just from pharmacy/boots/ or probably big supermarket. Would be worth trying probiotics too simply cos it you have been on antibiotics for 6 months then you good bacteria probably rather out of kilter as they get killed too. I might help your body deal with it better as they help to keep each other in balance. you could just try a pot of yoghurt or some probiotic tablets every day.

tigertea · 13/06/2008 15:21

I used to get lots of UTIs that always seemed to occur a couple of days after sex. I was given a supply of antibiotics by the urologist to just take one after sex and since I have done this, I have never had another UTI (unless I forget to take one). Re. pain, I suppose you have tried potassium citrate sachets (e.g. cymalon)?

YoungMummyOf1 · 13/06/2008 15:24

Oh my god luckywinner i have never met anyone who has the same problems as me.. I know lots of people who have water infections but nothin like mine! It's quite scary really what kind of damage water infections can do!

OP posts:
DartmoorMama · 13/06/2008 15:26

a problem with taking anti biotics a lot is it often leads to thrush. cos it kills all the good bacteria that normally help to keep your body too acidic for thrush to survive. I spent a while battling with anti biotics for an infection then getting thrush then beating that getting another infection getting antibiotics getting thrush cycle. I keep banging on about probiotics but it might help overall.

Its all a big balancing act really.

YoungMummyOf1 · 13/06/2008 15:29

No i have never tried that tigertea. Doctors don't give me any advice. They just give me antibiotics which don't work. My infections do get worse after sex so i'll have to try that one. Thanks

Young Mummy, I tend to get terrible UTIs after sex. Antibiotics can work for me. I have recently been prescribed Tavaloxx, not sure if available in UK, but DOES work.

I take a combination of codeine, ibuprofen and paracetomol for the pain and anti-inflammatories. Which also helps a lot.

Drink lots of water, and cranberry, and then only let myself pee once an house to break that hideous cycle.

Agree with DM about probiotics.

Also, TMI, always peeing straight after sex really can stop this happening for me.

YoungMummyOf1 · 13/06/2008 15:45

Thanks boudoiricca. Ill ask my doctor about Tavaloxx.
I do go to the toilet after having sex. It's like an ocd for me!! haha.
