Who knows their TIMES TABLES ?

RTKangaMummy · 23/01/2005 19:42

I didn't learn them at school.

My mum told me it was because of the fashion of not teaching them when I was in primary

I still don't know them without thinking

esp.

6x
7x
8x
9x

I can work them out obviously but not with instant answer

I did A level maths so it didn't harm me.

BTW I am 38

so are all the others of same age in same situation?

Well we did them in junior school. The school was separated into houses - red, green, yellow and blue (original eh!) and we had plastic badges in each colour with 'I know my tables' on it - to get your relevant badge you had to sit a test where you had 25 X questions and 25 divide questions - you had to get all 50 right to get your badge and you also got points for your house.

So, yes, I know my tables! Got my badge when I was 7 but I've always had a mathematical/scientific brain - don't ask me to do anything like poetry though! Good job there wasn't a badge for that!

I'm 32 btw.

don't know them either . I did once know them up to 12x but forgot them as soon as I'd passed the tests to check I knew them and have had no call to use them since.

RTKangaMummy · 23/01/2005 19:49

perhaps the ideas had changed after my time in primary

At DS school they are very hot on them

And I think that is good

For 9x:

take away 1 from the multiplicant (???) for the first digit of the answer, then take that away from 9 to give the other digit

eg 9x7=63
(7-1 is 6 and 9-6 is 3)

What is the point in learning all you tables by rote anyway - you may not actually understand it and it'll only save you seconds in real life.

I'm awful at them for the same reason as you RT. I'm 42! I am good at science but never liked maths that much. I can use it, but don't enjoy it much

RTKangaMummy · 23/01/2005 19:54

You see I can work them out fine

but DS has to answer them within 5 secs

im only 22 and i dont know them either - couldnt grasp them - im useless i know!

MunchedTooManyMarsLady · 23/01/2005 19:57

also all the anwers add up to 9

2x9=18 1+8 =9
3x9=27 2+7 =9

etc....

paolosgirl · 23/01/2005 19:58

Another way of remembering your 9x is that every answer will add up to 9 - 18 1+8=9, 27 2+7=9, 36 3+6=9 etc etc..there are patterns all over the place in maths. Still doesn't make me any good at it whatsoever.

paolosgirl · 23/01/2005 19:59

Snap!

oxocube · 23/01/2005 19:59

I do think it matters, actually . Am not very good at maths but had to learn my tables (as my 9 yr old has to now) and its one of the few things I have actually found useful.
