Who knows their TIMES TABLES ?

RTKangaMummy · 23/01/2005 19:42

I didn't learn them at school.

My mum told me it was because of the fashion of not teaching them when I was in primary

I still don't know them without thinking

esp.

6x
7x
8x
9x

I can work them out obviously but not with instant answer

I did A level maths so it didn't harm me.

hmb, it's the Fibonacci sequence - or could be. Maybe
11222221 , but there are lots of those or maybe it's

1112211 based on the sequence (for every two ones in a sequence you get a two for a turn and then add on a one)

There are loads of answers.. but I'd love to know the one you're looking for!

linnet, if she's really lucky she'll learn them by rote and then they'll be programmed in.

If she's not mathematically inclined it might mean she has to mentally go through her tables to find an answer, so she won't win at tables races, but for the rest of her life she'll be able to produce an answer when required (like the old lady in DD2's home)

Crossposted with wwb! I like her explanation.

Just goes to show that for any set of data, explanations can be very persuasive and explain it well but so very wrong. (My bet is on WWB for the correct answer, btw)

JanH · 23/01/2005 21:56

I like WWB's but how does it get from 1211 (ie, for 21, 1 2 and 1 1) to 111221?

WigWamBam · 23/01/2005 21:58

1211 = one 1, one 2, two 1s = 1112211

WigWamBam · 23/01/2005 21:59

Typos in numbers no good!

1211 = one 1, one 2, two 1s = 11, 12, 11 = 111221

JanH · 23/01/2005 22:01

Ahhh - OK - get it, thanks, WWB! Yes, it works - the next ones fall into place - well done

RTKangaMummy · 23/01/2005 22:17

well done WWB

Good girl wwb, each is the numerical description of the previous one.

Have another

1,3,2,3,3,5,4,4

I do these with my classes as a warm up before work starts!

Not up to the numbers challenge this time in the morning, but just wanted to say that I agree with learning certain things, e.g times tables and kings & queens, by rote. It may seem inflexible at the time of learning, but it really stays with you for life. I don't know my kings & queens, btw, but really wish I did.

WigWamBam · 24/01/2005 10:30

I would guess that each second number represents the number of letters in the number before it - so 1,3 2,3, 3,5, 4,4 and then 5,5 6,3 7,5 and so on.

MistressMary · 24/01/2005 10:38

Well I'm bad at anything numerical,I mean REALLY bad!
I struggle to add up and takea way leave alone know my times table.
I'm sure it's like a dyslexia with numbers I got.

I think I am going to have to trake a basic maths course or something, I am ashamed of it.

ScummyMummy · 24/01/2005 10:38

Wow wwb- you're on a roll.
