It all depends on where you live. I used to live in London and knew people with many different backgrounds etc. Where I live only just outside London most people are white. The one thing I miss about living in London is the diversity!

beaniesteve · 17/03/2008 16:20

Just because you don't know they are Homosexual doesn't mean you don't know any homosexuals. IYSWIM

SixSpotBurnet · 17/03/2008 16:20

I think it just depends where you live!

Kewcumber · 17/03/2008 16:21

if you live in a big city in the Uk then I would say that you were freakishly abnormal .

ComeOVeneer · 17/03/2008 16:22

From my experience yes I would say it is unusual in this day and age, but as others have said I guess it depends where you are, and what you do.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 17/03/2008 16:22

Probably depends what job you do, too - some professions are more diverse than others. Also things like what sort of schools/nurseries your dcs go to.

JingleyJen · 17/03/2008 16:23

I agree it is about location, I grea up in Scarborough, there were NO black people around except for in september at the teacher conference at the Spa and teachers were bussed in from around the country, we stared because it was soooo unusual.

I now am married to a chinese man, have quite a few gay friends and live in Cambridge which is quite multicultural.

Quattrocento · 17/03/2008 16:24

Gosh

You must live in the remote north

Or maybe the remote south west

Or an island somewhere

The majority of the people I meet nowadays are ethnically divergent from the UK norm - either ethnically different, jewish, gay or whatever.

But there must be a UK norm somewhere -

chuggabopps · 17/03/2008 16:26

Are you an individual or a clone? I would have thought that you would differ from the people you knew in opinions, taste, beliefs, politics or something. think that you may be attaching too much significance to sexuality or ethnic origin, which are not necisarily discrete boxes to fit into or not, more like scattergrams of peramaters on a sliding scale.

Mercy · 17/03/2008 16:27

Are there no families from different ethnic backgrounds at your dc school?

OverMyDeadBody · 17/03/2008 16:27

Do you live in deepest darkest Norfolk? If so it's understandable. You have my deepest sympathies.

Iota · 17/03/2008 16:28

Do you mean close friends or people that you know e.g school mums/people at work?

Mercy · 17/03/2008 16:29

Maybe not in RL but you know plenty of us on MN Harman!!

ZippiBabes · 17/03/2008 16:30

of no relevance whatever but you have reminded me that last night i dreamt one of my college tutors who is incidentally gay was playing with on of my nipples while my boyfriend played with the other

i woke up as did my boyfriend who then told me he had just dreamt about me but i was kate bush in his dream but still me iyswim

and i was in a big mansion on a kind of landing and there were loads of staircases i was throwing a magic dice which had any number on it not just six and boyfriend was walking up and down stairs but couldn't get to me

i didn't tell him my dream after thinking about it for a minute

thought it had the potential to b miscontrued

theUrbanDryegg · 17/03/2008 16:31

Oh Cali, I'm sure at least 50% of them are gay really, just very very repressed.

Also Harman, if your social circle mostly consists of families then the chances of you knowing/getting to know any gay people are pretty slim. Dh and I know 4 gay people and only one of them is a parent.

Troutpout · 17/03/2008 16:44

Do you live in Cheshire?

sorry to disagree with you- all humans come from the same genetic make up. making sweeping statements about people based on your perception of their ethnic origin or sexuality helps noone, it entrenches a division instead of bringing people together.
think back to playground taunts- ginger, four eyes, fatty etc. the taunts start when someone points out their percieved differences. dont put yourself in a tick box- its so limiting. be defined by your actions, not what others surmise of you.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 17/03/2008 17:00

Which bit of Harman's posts do you disagree with Chuggabopps? I don't see that she has made any sweeping statements or put anyone in any boxes.
