Harman, I was brought up in Kent; I'm not surpised to hear things haven't changed much - but also, I don't think your situation is that unusual tbh.

Chugga, what are you on about? Harman asked a very reasonable question based on her own experience imo.

Harman, a good friend of mine visited me (in Kent also) and as we were walking through town she commented, "It's very white here isn't it?"

I obviously don't pay enough attention.

Can't see where Chugga's objection to your post comes from either harman.
Funnily enough your post makes me realise that I know people from other ethnic origin, but I don't seen to know any gay people. I did grow up being familiar with homosexuality as my parents had some close friends that were gay, but I don't know any in this country.
I suppose that you are a bit unusual in this day and age, but as most people said: it depends on where you live.

Desiderata · 17/03/2008 17:09

You're over analyzing, Chugga. It's a straightforward question, to which I will add my own answer.

I live in Somerset, and there are very few people of ethnic origin in villages and outlying areas. Bristol, of course, is as diverse as anywhere.

Whether you live in a city or live in the country, I don't see that it's a problem that you don't get to mix. I'm sure there are many tribes in the far flung corners of the globe who don't spend their day fretting that no white people live in their village!

Harman, I grew up in Medway - home of the 'chavs' and other riff raff according to some

Can I just clarify something? Everyone has an ethnic background or origin; to refer to someone as being of ethnic origin is meaningless - it doesn't mean non white European. Harman uses the term correctly in her OP!

Gosh Harmon, you should get out a bit more and see the world.

MrsMattie · 17/03/2008 17:32

You're probably not as unusual as you think, I would imagine. I am often struck by the whiteness of parts of the home counties and south coast when I (ocassionally!) leave my little enclave in London. On a personal tip, I'm married to a black man and my best mate is a lesbian .
