A little thread for all 4x4 mummies (and daddies) whether you use it on the school run or to carry pigs t'market.....

Do you fit the stereotype of flash, over indulgent, stuck-up-your-own-arse Joseph wearing dizzy bint who doesn't care for the environment or anyone else? I don't.

A question - what do all you people with little cars do when you go on holiday? I mean, I too could get two adults, a child in a car seat, a buggy and a week's worth of shopping for four people into a Saxo (what luxury - two adults and only one child when doing the shopping!). But 2 adults, 2 children, a buggy, a travel cot, a high chair, a family tent, cooking equipment, sleeping bags, airbeds, cool boxes, clothes... No chance, even with a roof box - baby number 2 means we need a car with a boot, and chose a 4x4 (smaller than the estates that we looked at).

moomina · 14/11/2004 15:55

Haven't had a holiday for 4 years - it is a 'luxury' I can't afford.

moomina · 14/11/2004 16:02

Anyway, fruitful, not sure of your point. Are you saying that you chose a 4x4 because it would be useful once a year when you went on holiday? Because, speaking as one of 'you people with little cars', if I had a one-off occasion where I needed a bigger car, I'd probably hire a bigger car.

Not a 4x4 though.

Gobbledigook · 14/11/2004 16:13

Fruitful - agree - I had a fiesta and though I could do day to day in it, no good for hols. Don't need 4x4 though, got a Mondeo. Not a small car but a normal, average car that doesn't block the road

Oh why am I getting into this?! Really not that bothered about people that drive 4x4s if they want to!! Reflection of my boredom with work, right...back to it Gobby!!!

spacemonkey · 14/11/2004 16:14

I'd like to know what the facts are about 4x4s and pollution. Anyone know?

fruitful · 14/11/2004 16:50

Gobbledigook - my 4x4 is smaller than your mondeo .

Moomina - I wasn't making a point, I was asking a question. And yes, one of several reasons why we chose a bigger car was so that we can go away for weekends and holidays without having to put the baby on the roof.

I'm sorry that you can't afford holidays, but I guess it means that you don't need a bigger car, so you can carry on being irritated by other people who drive their bigger car around town .

Gobbledigook · 14/11/2004 16:54

Probably fruitful!! Some are not that big are they? My friend has got an enormous lexus though - it's bloody ridiculous (but very nice )

MistressMary · 14/11/2004 16:55

Woah, still at the top of the page!
How's that for being top status!
Well just got back from a wee run in the country, seen some lovely country side too, had a flask of teas and some sarnies.
What a pleasant day.

JanH · 14/11/2004 16:55

sm, about ¾ down this page there are a few examples.

moomina · 14/11/2004 16:57

Lucky you put that in there, fruitful, otherwise I might have thought you were being incredibly patronising... Hoorah for emoticons, eh?

(Although, actually, I agree with Gobbledigook. I couldn't give a toss about 4x4s really. Can't believe I've spent half the day on a thread about them.)

JanH · 14/11/2004 16:58

The SUV Info Link

Gobbledigook · 14/11/2004 16:58

LOL Moomina!!!

fruitful · 14/11/2004 17:16

Yeah, what we really need is a tongue-in-cheek icon. Symbols for "I really care about this and I am having a serious discussion and I might get offended" or for "I couldn't give a stuff, I'm just having a chat and am liable to make jokes".

(ooh, italics, I used italics!).

fruitful · 14/11/2004 17:18

By the way, the reason I'm reading this thread is because I'm supposed to be searching the Inland Revenue site for Corporation Tax forms so I can do dh's year-end. You can see the attraction of a discussion about 4x4s now?

Gobbledigook · 14/11/2004 18:04

Fruitful - ditto! I'm supposed to be writing a report on smoking cessation and obesity!

Tanzie · 14/11/2004 20:29

I agree with Ronniebaby. I have 4 x 4 and love it. I bought mine 6-7 years ago when I lived in Eastern Europe and needed it to drive on crap roads, over mountains and through piles of uncleared snow. I am now living in Western Europe, and tho I do not need a 4 x 4, could not afford to buy a new car. So have kept it. I drive it safely and responsibly and can park it too (unlike women I see doing the school run who are incapable of getting their people carrier into one space or their large Merc lined up with the kerb. So there!
