A little thread for all 4x4 mummies (and daddies) whether you use it on the school run or to carry pigs t'market.....

Do you fit the stereotype of flash, over indulgent, stuck-up-your-own-arse Joseph wearing dizzy bint who doesn't care for the environment or anyone else? I don't.

Kangamummy - you jammy sod, I want one of those

yes, yes, yes I know I've just said they are irritating on the other thread but that's only cos I haven't got one!!!

JanH · 13/11/2004 20:13

Hi, Ronnie! I'm good thanks, I guess you are too, I bet you are a tiny bit bigger now than you were in the summer ? Have you given up work now? I've noticed you're here a lot more than you used to be!

Gobbledigook · 13/11/2004 20:17

BTW - I do think some on here are getting a bit touchy! It's only a bit of banter about how mildly irritating they are in built up areas and they ARE I'm afraid!! That's not to say I wouldn't buy one myself!

BTW Hatter - don't worry about 'generalising' - I work in Market Research and it's all about 'generalising' - you can only market to the masses, not the individual!

MistressMary · 13/11/2004 20:34

Wow, I only get touchy if one is referred to as a moron or stupid? Fair enough.
Tissy second hand Defenders trashed?
Rubbish, they are breaking in at that stage.
Need to be muddied up and a few dents for the best result.
80 percent of landys are still on the road from new, according to his lordship, sat here.
Not bad going eh?
Trashed. Phht.

MistressMary · 13/11/2004 20:37

Davros love the princess Madge, Liz Taylor comparison.
Very apt, me thinks.

gothicmama · 13/11/2004 20:39

4x more pollution than a normal car just goes to show how selfish their drivers must be as does teh fact they block you view if one parks next to you in a car park.

ScummyMummy · 13/11/2004 20:46

Must agree, Gobbledigook. I'm glad you guys are so happy, honest, and it's actually good to hear that there are some non-tossers who drive these cars. My experience has not been so good- the pile up of 4 x 4s outside the prep school we pass on our way to and fro my kids school is seriously an impediment to getting along or across the road and the standard of driving appallingly unsafe. Added to this, the parent drivers cluttering up the pavements have been incredibly rude to me and mine. I find it particularly galling to have a five year old's polite "excuse me please" repeatedly ignored until replaced with a rather rougher request from me, which happens not infrequently.

Davros · 13/11/2004 20:51

oooh, talk about prejudice, you're on the wrong thread.....

ScummyMummy · 13/11/2004 20:55

Who me? Typical- driven off the thread by 4 by 4ers just like they drive me and mine off the road.

MistressMary · 13/11/2004 20:59

Nah, we just drive ramblers off the by-ways.
Get labbeled selfish, better live up to it, I spose.

tex111 · 13/11/2004 21:02

Hi ladies, I know I've joked about SUV or 4x4 drivers but I didn't mean to offend. There is definitely a stereotype though I'm sure you don't all fall into it. I can certainly see the appeal of driving one but agree that they are a nuisance on the small English roads and you can't deny the environmental issues. Aside from emmisions there's the sheer volume of petrol that they require due to the size of their engines. I have read that Ford have intorduced a hybrid 4x4 that gets up to 40 mpg and Honda, Toyota, etc are going to follow suit. Would any of you ladies consider such an option or does the appeal lie in the more exclusive models for you? Just curious really.

MistressMary · 13/11/2004 21:05

Better speak to me other half on that front tex.
Only got it beginning of this year and we love it though.

Davros · 13/11/2004 21:06

I'm getting a toyota prius next time. Part electric, part petrol. Can't wait to be honest, bored with current 4x4

SoupDragon · 13/11/2004 21:06

How many of you have bull bars on the front of yours?

Davros · 13/11/2004 21:07

no bull bars, draw the line there, dangerous and ugly (just like me!)

MistressMary · 13/11/2004 21:08

No bull bars, but winch for getting others out of snow drifts and out of trouble.

JanH · 13/11/2004 21:10

I would like a Prius but a) too small and b) too dear.

jampot · 13/11/2004 22:05

Hey less of the 4x more pollution than other cars - my car churns out about 70-80% less carbon shite than yours probably does and I pay my road tax just like anyone else so am entitled to park anywhere that's legal - same as you!

OP posts:
Ronniebaby · 13/11/2004 23:25

No bull bars on mind, how stupid are you and how stupid do you think we are. Duh we are women, we dont have trashy things like that, FGS.

Jampot - here here, I pay my road tax, insurance etc and everything,

Mistress Mary - I'm woth you, I am a very laid back person, but object to being call a moron etc, just for the car I drive, we could all start slaggin others off for all types of things, but we have more credit than that.

Janh - yeh much bigger, but not massive Not given up work yet, self employed so need as much cash as poss, plus I can annoy all the other drivers by driving my 4x4 around the place, like them just to the supermarket and back again, and the school run (oh that's not a waste of time effort money and petrol is it, NOOOOO)

Scummy Mum - as I said I DONT park right by the gates, dont feel the need too.

BadHair · 13/11/2004 23:55

Well I love my sherman tank and as I park it legally, albeit over a few car park spaces, pay my road tax and use it off road aswell as on the school run, I don't think I need to justify myself to anyone. I have a perfect high up driving position, know that I am super-safe in it and drive it carefully so I don't often hit pedestrians. At least I think I don't - but lets face it if I did I'd be alright jack.

jampot · 14/11/2004 00:36

Wow Badhair - what kind of car do you drive to take up several car parking spaces? Here are the dimensions of a typical smallish family car against a particularly large 4x4. As you will see the Monster is approx. 1.5ft longer and 8 inches wider (obv with both mirrors out). Now judging by my maths (which may or may not be correct) one can park 10 Focus to 9 Discoveries end to end.

Ford Focus
Exterior (mm)

Overall length 4382
Overall width without mirrors 1702
Overall width with mirrors 1998

Discovery

Overall Length 4835
Width with mirrors folded 2009
Width with mirrors 2190

plus BH your comment about being alright jack if you ran a pedestrian over is exactly the sort of comment a non 4x4 person is expecting from a 4x4 driver - really you should be more responsible,.

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 14/11/2004 09:01

Well, Ronniebaby, you may not be stupid but you're certainly rude.

MistressMary · 14/11/2004 09:18

And Baked Taty wasn't naturally with her all 4x4 drivers are stupid, brainless and morons comments? Not nice being called stupid is it?
Can we not answer back to comments and querys or are we all dumb as well? Sorry, If I appear rude but this how I have observed things.
Anyhow we do have a lovely black snorkel fitted on the side of our "Defender of the Realm".
Now that does souund rude.

SoupDragon · 14/11/2004 09:26

I asked a perfectly reasonable and polite question and got a rude reply. Point out where exactly I deserved to be called stupid? BPs comments have nothing to do with me do they?

Toothache · 14/11/2004 09:29

The daughter of the woman next door to me has a 4x4. She has 3 children under 4 though and can see why she needs a big car. But coz she isn't confident in driving it she won't park it up her Mums drive so PARKS IT OVER OURS!!!!!! Now THAT pisses me off!

Ronniebaby - Whoa there with the insults!
