Who honestly enjoys Christmas fairs?

They all seem to be rather depressing affairs full of lurid sweets, cheap plastic things, non-fairtrade chocolate and toys and animal-tested toiletries.
And people singing dirges - not even real carols - too close to the damn microphone. People were wincing!
The worst thing is that so many people make so much effort. How could it be better?

Perhaps if it annoyed you so much you should help organsie next year- those of us who do the planning would rpefer help to criticism

It wasn't a school one, it was a town one. And dcs don't really enjoy them.

why don't dc's enjoy them?
most dc's prefer cadburys rather than fair trade

TootTheAbsoluteLoon · 01/12/2007 16:52

And if you don't buy anything then it's depressing for those running the stalls.

Fair trade doesn't taste any different y'know.

And what is Christmassy about chocolate produced using child slaves?

OP posts:
LedodgyChristmasjumper · 01/12/2007 16:54

why did you go then?

TootTheAbsoluteLoon · 01/12/2007 16:54

I think dcs don't enjoy them because they get excited and expect it to be good, but it's not really.

actually I lie, i did buy a carved wooden otter

ElasticAnimal · 01/12/2007 16:56

i bought a sausage

MamaG · 01/12/2007 16:57

I didn't buy any chocolate

Lazarou · 01/12/2007 16:58

I like a bit of hogroast. There's no better sight than a pig going round on a skewer at a christmas fayre.

TootTheAbsoluteLoon · 01/12/2007 16:58

I was sort of hoping this could be a constructive thread. Never mind.

I bought two lovely handmade Christmas tree decorations (not crappy at all) and won two brand new with labels Jellykitten baby toys on the £1 tombola.

ElasticAnimal · 01/12/2007 16:59

perhaps a rephrase?

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 01/12/2007 17:00

DD also got her face painted like a butterfly for a pound and it was better than when she got it done for a fiver at Chester zoo.

TootTheAbsoluteLoon · 01/12/2007 17:00

Good

OK toot, how to improve

Our little market town, a couple of yers ago, had a "winter wonderland" festival

nice food being sold

All the shops got involved and decorated/handed out samples etc

Temp ice rink, carousel, carols being sung by GOOD singers, not wailing mongrels

Mulled wine being bandied around

STalls only selling quality stuff, including second hand/tombola etc

twas great and not a non-fairtrade chocolate to be seen

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 01/12/2007 17:01

Yeah Chester Zoo is expensive.
