DH at work and I think i've broken my ankle!!!!

Fell down the stairs, holding DS3 as I was rushing to get ready to pick DS2 up. Ds came away unscathed thankgod.

Somehow managed to get boots on and walk to playgroup to get him.

I thought that was a good sign, if I was kind of walk on it it can't be broken.

Now I can't even put it on the floor, it's swollen but not bruised. Is that a good sign? I've never broken anything before......would I be able to sit here relaying the story to you all if I'd broken it or would I be screaming in agony? It does f*cking hurt though.

Dh not home from work until 3:30pm so can't go to hospital until then.

what a f*cking nightmare!

  • sorry cant help emma - have you called dh?
popsycal · 08/11/2004 13:42

get a bag of frozen veg on it and keep it up if yu can

willow2 · 08/11/2004 13:43

I know my dh injured his ankle badly only for it to "break" properly a few days later. It may well be that you've only sprained it badly - which bloody hurts - but think you should try to get it checked out asap if you are still in pain. Take Neurofen as that will be the best thing for reducing swelling. That said, I kind of think you would be in absolute agony if you had properly broken or fractured it. But could be wrong!

Oh God, that was no help, was it?

Twiglett · 08/11/2004 13:43

you need to get to A&E .. do you have any friends who could pick up other kids?

you need to call DH and get him to come home

you could have a fracture or a bad sprain .. swelling is just a sign of body's defences coming into play

call an ambulance and you should be able to take kids in if not

(BTW when I broke my ankle and leg (tibia and fibia) I could still wiggle my toes so thought it wasn't broken)

Good luck Emma

nailpolish · 08/11/2004 13:45

if you cant get anyone to take you to hospital etc then keep it raised til dh gets home, (as much as you can!) with frozen peas etc and that should keep swelling down but try not to put any weight on it (difficult i know)

watch your toes dont change colour (scary)

can you rotate it?

emmatmg · 08/11/2004 13:54

Dh just phoned (I sent him a text), he's miles away and wouldn't be able to get her any sooner than his finish time.

Just called SIL, she's bringing Ds1 home from school.

Will go to A&E asap.

nailpolish · 08/11/2004 13:55

good

emmatmg · 08/11/2004 13:57

Np, I can move it inwards but not out. Can't really rotate it at all, but it doesn't really hurt if I try...... it just doesn't do it.

Yes you should go to hospital and insist on an x-ray ( I know a woman who was walking around on a broken ankle she thought was just twisted for FIVE AND A HALF YEARS!!

nailpolish · 08/11/2004 13:59

sounds dodgy - get to hossie asap. watch for your toes changing colour and pins and needles/numbness

emmatmg · 08/11/2004 14:00

Coddy LOL.

i have creamed them, which is probably why i fell......bloody skidded down the stairs.....so it's all your fault

fio2 · 08/11/2004 14:03

poor you emma i feel down stairs and twisted my ankle on saturday. i would say if it has swole it is most probably a fracture or a very bad sprain. You poor thing {{{}}}xxx get dh home now!

emmatmg · 08/11/2004 14:04

Coddy, it take a whole lot more than that to offend me!.
Plus I didn't really skid either but it was a funnier explanation

Demented · 08/11/2004 14:28

Hope you're OK Emma. Sounds like you need to get that ankle checked out soon.

marthamoo · 08/11/2004 14:29

And a sleeping bag and some Kendal mint cake and a small camping stove...hope it's OK, emma!

Marina · 08/11/2004 14:33

Ouch. Glad you are going to A & E when you can. My father made my mother walk round Buttermere on an ankle that turned out to be broken, it does not necessarily completely incapacitate you.
Best of luck Emma, let us know how you get on.
