Bonfire night - is it just me who hates it?

Well I don't hate it on principle it's the fact that for 2 weeks either side every night you have to listen to fireworks going off all night!

It's like living in a war zone round here most nights. Even during the day kids are letting fireworks off, I saw one lad let a firework off in a phonebox at lunchtime. Where do kids get the money to buy them they cost a fortune?

I would vote for only organised firework displays on the 5th of November!

we're lucky - we have Rugby Club backing the end of our garden and every Guy Fawkes night they have a proper 'do' with some spectacular fireworks - free ringside seats from JoolsToo's garden - Corned Beef Hash and Treacle toffee

I hate the way it spreads out over 2 weeks or more. And it is driving my dog into a quivering wreck (she gets worse each year - I am dreading the weekend).

Definitely should be limited to 5th of November, and maybe to just official displays as well.

Don't know how people can afford to do their own - they seem to cost a fortune.

I hate it with a passion. Round here it starts in September and goes on until Christmas! Last week the guy in the house that backs onto ours had a stack of display fireworks, it sounded as if someone was trying to blow the house up. It went on from 8pm to 9.30, and then he started again from 10.30 to midnight. There were used fireworks all over our garden, some of them two feet long and three inches thick. I dread to think of the money that went up in flames. I'm not a killjoy, I used to love bonfire night, but these are display fireworks and have no place in back gardens. Since the damned things have been on sale year round they're a nuisance.

I think it takes the novelty of fireworks away as well. When I was a kid fireworks on bonfire night were awe-inspiring. Now they seem to be almost ubiquitous at any celebration at any time of the year.

And there seems to be the thought that bigger equals better. People can't make do with a box of Standard fireworks like they used to, they have to be the size of the average three year old and make a noise fit to wake the dead!

And of course they are used extensively throughout Diwhali too which is around now? (sorry for my ignorance here).

I have said for years (boring old fart that I am) that I can't believe they sell dangerous explosives to the general public! My parents always had a bonfire party, and they and their friends were always drunk when letting them off! It's a miracle we all survived!

I love bonfire night but wish it was just that night as that makes it more special. I agree, people have them to often to celebrate other things now. I also agree that people go made buying huge fireworks, such are too big for the average garden anyway. I know my hubby bought one a few years ago, without reading the distance people had to stay away from it. It was one of those all in one ones, it was great but we couldnt get far enough away and thats danagerous. This year we are going to my brothers. We have just bought a standard box, dont know what hes bought though.

... Fireworks scare me

.. its 'cos of some stupid government warning advert I saw when I was about 5 or 6 with loads of kids playing with fireworks on the street and the last scene was a girl holding her hands over her eyes .. it scared me so much back then I wouldn't go to school for 3 days .. and I still remember the flares

.. how sad is that?

I HATE FIREWORKS and would like to shove them up my neighbours a**e!

People who set off fireworks all the time don't have young babies/children or dogs just moeny to burn.

we are having fireworks at MIL palce this weekend. why? because the local council doesnt do displays anymore. if they did them we'd go to that and then wouldnt bother. Last year we went to stevenage to see the fireworks there, but dh isnt up for walking this year as has been ill.

but i get fed up with fireworks all night long. grrrrrrr.

I hate bonfire night, my poor cat retreats under the bed for a month and last week I made the mistake of walking past our local secondary school with dd in pushchair at chucking out time and the kids were throwing flares at each other and anyone, they were using them as guns to shoot people across the road. I was petrified, eventually took sanctuary in a newsagents, they called the police but told me they never turn up anyway. Bah humbug I think it is stupid and dangerous to be selling them at all.

...& I remember being quite 'oooh!' & 'aaaah!' over fireworks as a sprog...our living room window looks over the whole town, so ds is bored with 'em already & he's only 3 months old!

I don't really MIND them as such - even the cats are quite blase about them now - but I do find them a terribly boring waste of money.

I loved Bonfire Night when I was a kid - I think it was my favourite day of the year next to Xmas. We lived fairly high up on a hill and from my mum's bedroom window we had a really good view and could see fireworks for miles. Then mum always let some off in our back garden and we would have hot dogs (except with real sausages, not frankfurters) and treacle toffee. I can, sitting here in Florida 25 years later, still almost smell the combination of sausages and fireworks.

Now as a grown-up though I do think they're extremely dangerous and shoudn't be allowed for sale to the general public. Are they really that expensive? I had no idea. What does a box go for these days?

dh bought 5 rockets for £12 and let them off a couple of days before bonfirenight...they were loud and we were very safe....
