FACEBOOK - why?

I mean, it's bad enough spending a couple of hours on Mumsnet without having another site to waste my life on as well!

I like to go outside every now and then, breathe the fresh air and talk to real people, you know that thing where you move your mouth and real words come out?

I mean, how can we teach our kids social skills when all we do is sit at the pc "chatting" to pretend people all day?

And yet when I mention my flange of pixies you all think I'm the one who's mad!

So explain the addiction to me please.

I intend this as a tongue in cheek thread, after all Mumsnet is much the same as Facebook and I wondered when someone would point that out to me.

But instead I've upset a good friend. So as the OP can I just apologise to anyone else who felt angered by my crass comments.

Rhubs.

The girl I posted about... She was the girl I wrote to for years! And she was thrilled to hear from me!!!

Aw I'm so excited!

So, FB is good for some things

Rhubarb · 17/09/2007 09:50

Where is she?

I'm on but still don't quite get it. Also I only have 5 friends which seems to be a very small number. Should I be trawling for them or are they supposed to find me? I think I'd feel horribly sad if some rejected me if I'd asked them to be a friend. Long dormant memories of the school yard are flooding back.

ShinyHappySchmooo · 17/09/2007 10:02

Isn't it just primarily for online flirting though? I mean if you were to statistically measure what the majority of people use it for.

And probably most of them married to other people. With kids.

I used to dip into (nearly) everything the internet had to offer. Feel like I've grown up these days.. I use MN.. my online banking.. my student homepage.. occasionally iTunes and Google for info. That's it.

Jennifer8 · 17/09/2007 10:03

Oh Rhubs...d'you know, I waited till I had a new MN name so I could vent on a thread like this...just because I was afraid I'd upset MY friend who invited me onto it!
I don't think your OP was anything to get massively offended over, sadly I can't say the same for some of my posts in the past, I nearly managed to lose a very close pal over one of them so am a bit more careful these days.
Try not to feel too bad, she was probably having a bad day.
Loads of people hate facebook. Mostly managers of people who use it at work, admittedly

cheer up

I like it. I don't bother using it to get in touch with people from the past, particularly, although I do have a couple of old friends who 'found' me through it. I like that people can only access my profile after I've accepted them as friends, I have a lot of RL friends who I don't see as often as I'd like and it's just an amusing and easy way to keep up with them. Was rather horrified to read a while ago that it's all about random sex with strangers, can't really say I'm getting much of that, thank goodness!

warthog · 17/09/2007 22:45

facebook is like mnet for rl friends.

WelshBoris · 18/09/2007 19:49

I took this the wrong way, and have replied to Rhubs email explaining why.

I was tired on Saturday, DDs party was exhausting, then she was ill and we ended up back in hospital.

I flew off the handle about Rhubs comments, and I shouldn't have. But I stand by what I said, MN and FB are important to me, because in the evenings I'm on my own. The internet keeps me sane and stops the loneliness that kills me some times.

marthamoo · 18/09/2007 19:56

Nobody's ever given me George Clooney as a present on Mumsnet...but they have on Facebook
