Another "I'm so proud of my bro" thread. Paedophiles beware.

Had a lovely day with my brother and SIL and we got a chance to talk (away from the children) about his job.

He works as a detective in the 'pro-active paedophile detection unit'for The Met police.

Be assured, people, that the police are onto these b**ds.

It was fascinating to talk to him. He says that, since Operation Ore, detection technology has been transformed. I obviously can't go into details but it was reassuring to know that so much is being done to protect children from further abuse.

I have a lot of respect for the police who do that job. It can;t be easy - particularly when you begin and if you have childrne.

Well done him. It must be a very difficult job.

But how do they find people who have never been convicted, say an uncle who abuses several of his nieces? Don't most child sexual abusers get away with it as it never comes to light/the police?

No children. Major fertility problems and they both decided that they were happy enough without children.

He was in the 'Child Protection'unit before which he says he found more difficult as he had to interview 'live' children about their abuse.

With this job he and his team track offenders via the internet.

Ah, that makes sense. So it's not paedophiles in general, but the ones who are online downloading pornography etc. I expect a lot do.

it is great to hear that resources are put into this, so easy to just complain about lack of police on beat without thinking of what else they could be doing. how does the funding work?

Nine. I think the view is that abusers will often seek out more and more forms/images of child abuse and this will often lead them to the internet.

We talked about 'List 99' and he agreed that it is useless, unless a person has offended and been detected.

Interestingly, he warned us to be wary of volunteers in child-based organisations who give up every hour to 'help.' Especially if they have no children involved.

Hula. He worked before with the 'real live' cases. Now he works with the 'equally-real-but-filmed cases.'

The technology the police have now is amazing. Wish I could share, but obviously I can't.

Is it only me that thinks this sounds more like paranoid vigilantism than police work? Beware of volunteers who don't have any children?

I think she means people who volunteer for example to help the local brownies on their camp when their own children are not involved in the activity.

He said that, if a man working in a scout group has children in that group, then probably no problem.

A man with sons who left the group the year before and 'wanting to give something back' again, probably OK.

A man with no children who volunteers every hour, is there at all hours, every time the group meets.

He says that most normal adult men are willing to give up some time for a worthy cause involving children. But a man (and they are nearly always men) who wants to be involved all the time, rings bells.

and I read that as people who are abnormally involved (ie not the odd hour or two) but who make it a big part of their lives.

I'm sure that would catch many genuine volunteers too.

i think that is probably a very very tiny proportion of a pattern that has emerged of how some of them conduct themselves and there lives...

i think they do a fab and worthwhile what must be horrific job, i hate the thought of how some children suffer so terribly

I do know of an over-dedicated volunteer who was an abuser. Not only did he help with the activity, he was very keen to give children lifts to and from the activity. .

madamez. A recent bust via the internet yielded a man with not only a computer full of horrors but also a fist-full of information for children's summer camps.

These men seek out chances to be around children.

And I agree that it is sad that men with the purest of motives are open to suspicion.

the prob with crb checks etc is that obviously they only show up convictions or other intrest.. but dont show up any activity that hasnt been disclosed or happened
