Wow - been thinking about this for ages - and now I will have to go and spend afternoons in JL at Bluewater!!

DP said it would be good for me to have something to do not to start smoking again when Max is born and I can knit him lots of blankets - think that will be all I will be capeable of!!

Twinkie, if I were you I would not do a blanket because it would take ages! Little baby cardies take hardly any time because they are so small! I have the Debbie Bliss Beginners Knits book which has some really basic things in it + instructions on how to cast on/off, inc and dec - basic stuff like that. You can knit a little baby hat and a jumper in hardly any time at all.
