knit

I cant find anyone who would tech me. I was even contemplating going in the knitting shop and asking if they will teach me!

i've just bought my first ever wooden crochet hook, god i was so excited - that's how dull my life is...

californiagirl · 22/09/2004 16:43

Asking at the knitting shop is a good idea. If you pick these things up quickly, they may be able to teach you there and then (expect to knit a scarf first!) or if you want more help then they'll surely be able to recommend a teacher or class.

At the moment I'm crocheting baby toys. It's pitiful, but the baby likes them, and they're good for pounding on things without driving us completely nuts.

tamum · 22/09/2004 16:51

Oh goody goody, it's about knitting and it's from fio

I would gladly teach you. You should come and stay and bring the kids. Seriously. But if you don't want to come it is easy to learn as the others have said, and I will also gladly send you some patterns

Marina, that's a fab idea about the mumsnetters Cast-Off type event! I'm just doing a Lucky at the moment, as a break from dh's never-ending blooming Rowan Denim jumper (never, ever knit Denim for a bloke- it's big enough to start with and then you have to make it loads bigger to allow for shrinkage- have I mentioned this before? ). It's taken me a couple of months with a couple of break and I still have one-and-a-half sleeves to go . In the gap I made myself this which is fab.

io, I shall look through my 100000000 knitting links in my Favorites folder and get back to you with any I think might be useful!

tamum · 22/09/2004 16:52

io??? That was Fio

motherinferior · 22/09/2004 16:53

Tamum, that is FAB. How long did it take?

Am getting confused about needle sizes, someone refresh my memory - I used to knit all the time, mainly huge chunky multicoloured sweaters which only Binkie will remember, thank heavens

bundle · 22/09/2004 16:56

tamum, ikwym about rowan denim for men - dh's was a stripey number, still too bloomin big even after a hot wash. did a lovely a-line dress for dd2 though, have pattern if you're interested..

tamum · 22/09/2004 17:02

To be fair, that is the author's version rather than mine but even my version is pretty nice. It took about 2 weeks while we were on holiday, I guess if we'd been at home it would have taken 3 or 4? It was really interesting to knit though (stop giggling at the back). There are whole yahoo groups devoted to it

lou33 · 22/09/2004 17:03

I can knit. I would teach you if you lived closer.

Am sure you can buy teach yourself knitting books.

tamum · 22/09/2004 17:04

Aarrrghh bundle, don't say that! I will be completely distraught if this doesn't fit. The A line dress sounds gorgeous I'd be very interested, but my dd is 6- is that too old for it?

tamum · 22/09/2004 17:07

Does this help with needle sizes, MI? Don't quite know what you needed refreshed, IYKWIM!

zebra · 22/09/2004 17:07

Not one up the duff, are you, Fio? Sounds like nesting behaviour to me!

tamum · 22/09/2004 17:09

I'm not sure that this is easier than a book, but there are some little teach-yourself knitting videos online here . God, someone shut me up and sto me posting on this thread or my children will never get any tea.

Hello zebra

bundle · 22/09/2004 17:15

tamum, i'll check the pattern tonight, i think it's erika knight. in fact i must bl*y well finish it before she outgrows it (ie it needs sewing up, my least fave job )

fio2 · 22/09/2004 17:26

oooo great a knitting course and a free holiday rolled into one, thanks tamum

bundle - did you get my email? Not stalking just wondering

motherinferior · 22/09/2004 19:47

I needed my memory of what constitutes a small needle, what's a large needle and what's a whopper refreshed. Chucked out all my needles a while ago.

carla · 22/09/2004 19:48

FFS fio2, what with children, housework and MN where would you find the time???? xxx

Dingle · 22/09/2004 19:59

KIddies are asleep- I am not going to spend all my evening on MN.I am going to do something "crafty"like making some cards or even attack the wool in the loft, looking for some inspiration at the mo. Have never really search the net for knitting ideas & patterns.Something else to add to my to do list.
Fio, I am really quite happy to teach you if you want me to.Just let me know, or CAT to arrange details.

eefs · 23/09/2004 10:00

thanks Bundle, will CAT you...

bundle · 23/09/2004 10:02

tinker, i haven't seen one...

bundle · 23/09/2004 10:03

tamum, the largest is age 4-5 but I could copy it for you & also try to find the instructions from another book i have re: sizing up patterns (you look like a pretty top-notch knitterto me! )

fio2 · 23/09/2004 15:46

I blame you ALL for this!

I have just spent 52 quid in C & H fabrics

it lured me in and wouldnt let go

anyway i have bought two sets of needles, four balls of wool

2 dressmaking patterns, 2 different lots of fleece and two reels of sylko. The sewing I am good at, so that is not a problem

I am going to make scarves for the children, LOL to start me off. Stupid me bought the most expensive bloody wool! but it is absolutely gorgeous

Dingle is it C&H Fabrics in Rochester because they sell loads of good wool, and alll the rowan wool and patterns HTH

fio2 · 23/09/2004 15:48

plus! I had some career advice off a lovely woman who think I should 'aspire' yto doing a course at the uni. Which was lovely. i most probably bended her ear for ages but she really understood me

OP posts:
fio2 · 23/09/2004 15:49

but she did say i would have to learn to spell and type first

and why do people think that just because you are a 'mature' student you need to re-sit maths and english GCSE??!! I got A's thank you very much, i am not re-sitting them!

Tinker · 23/09/2004 15:59
