I have just been shopping on my own and bought my wedding dress, with no one's opinion but mine and four women in the shop who told me I looked magnificent - but they would, wouldn't they?

and it's red!!

Me and dh give it the thumbs up!

Grommit · 02/09/2004 14:31

I love it - very elegant!!

whitefeather · 02/09/2004 14:59

stunning! love it!

Bibiboo · 02/09/2004 15:11

WOW! It is beautiful lillibet!!! I got married in a pale pink dress in March but if I'd had the Christmas wedding I'd wanted I would have had deep red too.

No one (apart from sticky-beak family members) told me I shouldn't get married in pink and every one from the photographer to the table staff at the reception told me how they'd never seena bride get married in such a lovely pink before, so it was very flattering on the day too to get so many compliments.
GO FOR IT!!!

Beautiful. Just stunning.

Blu · 02/09/2004 15:17

Fabulous, Lilibet, truly fabulous.

Lowryn · 02/09/2004 15:17

Lilibet, if you felt that the dress was "the one" and you love it, then take no notice of any negativity from family.
I listened to my MIL who told me that I couldn't have bare shoulders in church and didn't get the dress which IMHO made me look like Grace Kelly. I have regretted wearing a second best dress to this day.
Having looked at your chosen dress, I think it is simply gorgeous. A fantastic colour and style. You will look divine!

helsi · 02/09/2004 15:18

Beauuuuuutiful!! I lurrrve that colour. My bridesmaids wore a similar colour and I had it as part of my theme. It was in the flowers, balloons on tables, mens waistcoats.

I only wish I had the gusts to wear it myself. You'll look lovely and i would also be tempted not to show anyone until you walk down the aisle or into the room etc.

Bouj · 02/09/2004 15:42

Absolutely beautiful. It's really pretty, also the colour of my bridesmaids dresses!

lilibet · 02/09/2004 15:51

Thanks for all the encouragement. Those of you who did have red dresses, what sort of flowers did you hae and what did you wear in your hair?

I bought my wedding dress, tiara, shoes, the lot on my own.
I just had a very fixed idea of what I wanted and what would go with it. Plus,my Mum took little interest in coming with me, and kept moaning at the thought of going round the shops.
She seemed quite pleased she didn't have to bother to come. The assistant said, she wished all brides were as easy to please!!

I had a hand tied bouquet of 12 red roses and my hair put up with a roll at the back - hard to descibe but lots of hairspray and pins and very elegant! My dress was a Laura Ashley floor length shift dress with spagetti staps with long stemmed roses printed on - very simple but lovely and I wore a satin-lined velvet wrap with it as it was very cold that day and only a couple of days before Christmas!

I think white lillies sound lovely for you - I imagine a very simple arrangement would be lovely.

jampot · 02/09/2004 16:30

i did that too lillibet in my lunch hour

no-on else opinion counts but yours, if you feel good you'll be wearing it with confidence and a smile and look amazing. And although no-one elses opinion matters, i do think it look slovley and think it's great that it's a classic style but in red.

smellymelly · 02/09/2004 17:11

Red ?? Wow - how fantastic!

If you are wearing red then you can carry white flowers.

I wore ivory with black beading July just gone, and it was fully appreciated, and it was exciting to wear something a little different. My bridesmaids wore magenta/purple monsoon dresses which changed colour in the light, and I held arum lillies in their dress colour, and they held ivory arum lillies to match my dress.

I had white lilies that sort of cascaded down and where intertwinded with long strings of ivy.. the green looked gorgeous with the red dress.. my dress was quite striking and the flowers were strong so I did not put anything in my hair - whatever I tried look too much....

The florist told me to have white and green and it did work - I was going to have red and white but apparently that is bad luck (to do with bandages in the crimean war?) and she was right - white really stood out and the green just added an extra colour

hatter · 02/09/2004 20:51

mancmum - it is to do with wars but not sure what exactly. When I was a whipper-snapper I did voluntary work in a hospice and was asked to arrange some flowers - I put red and white ones together and the woman was horrified and made me do them again. have never done it since!

Mirage · 02/09/2004 21:14

WOW-just beautiful.A friend of mine got married in red & she looked fab.You are going to look stunning.

For the record,my wedding dress was in oyster satin, made by my mum, with the bridesmaids in a teracotta-ish type shot silk (made by mum too).I thought it was quite tasteful & restrained-especially for a Las Vegas wedding!

sportyspice · 02/09/2004 21:18

OHHHHHHH i'm so jealous, i desperately wanted to get married in red but had other people throw in their opinions and tell me not to go for it and be proud and confident that you have chosen what it is that you want. Ohhhh i'm so envious red is such a stunning colour for a wedding dress

MummyToSteven · 02/09/2004 21:19

lovely dress

I got married in purple - why have a white meringue just coz its "traditional"

fuzzywuzzy · 02/09/2004 21:20

In some cultures it's considered lucky for the bride to wear red. Have to say the dress is stunning, and you will look radiant on your wedding day, every bride does. BTW it's your day so wear whatever colour you want.
