Ashamed of my toilet...........

My toilets are revolting. No matter how many 'power blocks' I stick down there, how much coke I stick in there, there is nothing that works apart from emptying them and scrubbing and scrubbing to get the limescale off and it takes forever. Has anyone got any magic solutions they could share with me? (I know this is a bit sad but I would love a sparkling toilet for less effort)

denture cleaning tablets. They certainly work on the limescale around the plug hole in the sink if you leave them overnight.

Vinegar. We had a seriously horrible loo after renting our house out and like you, I tried all the power blocks, limescale removers etc. and nothing worked. Then I read somewhere about putting vinegar down overnight once a week and coke every other week. Tried it and it worked . The morning after putting the vinegar down, I could easily chip the solid limescale away with my nails (yuk) .

pah! you wanna see my toilets. the one is so revolting i have never used it Even the plumber said it was gross and he unblocks poo for a living. I would suggest getting a new toilet bowl

Go on, try it - for 60p - before buying a new toilet bowl. Maybe even two bottles over two nights if it's really bad. And no, I don't work for Sarsons!

Do you take all the water out before putting the vinegar in?

I didn't - just stuck the whole bottle down and left it overnight.

I make DP stick his hand down there (wearing gloves) with a green scourer and some viakal - come back pretty quickly though so I will be adding a huge bottle of vinger to my shopping list this week!! (We have terribly hard water where I live) - ooohhhh may even try to clean shower door stains with vinegar too - will the clear one work as good??

And they added Bicarb to the vinegar and some water on the kim and aggie thing last night and this woman's loo was grosse - I would have refused to even go in the same room as it let alone sit on it - she had 4 kids and there wasn;t a basin in the downstairs loo - you can imagine how many germs on the flush handle and the door handle!! [puke icon]

I use white vinegar but it probably makes no difference.

I find Parozone thick bleach is great, they also do a limescale one. I hardly ever have to use a brush, just 'flush and shine'!!

I'm going away on Saturday for 2 weeks. If I put the vinegar in before I go do you think the loo will still be there when I get back?

defo denture cleaning tablets! seen it on how clean is your house, if you every get chance to read thier book do so some fab cleaning ideas

I use descaler -- just pour some (quite a bit) in the bowl and let it sit overnight. In the US there is a fantastic product called, I believe, "Iron Out" and it removes rust stains from toilet bowls, etc. It's a whoppingly strong acid (much stronger than descaler).

Sometimes my toilets are the only clean thing in my house.

Caustic Soda - Sarah Beeny used it on Property Ladder to clean a blackly limescaled toilet. Came up a treat but it's nasty stuff.

You can 'pump' out the water with the loo brush by pushing it in and out for a while then use the bicarb/white vinegar mix to scrub.

I love cleaning loos (weirdo I know) but I don't suppose you'd let me even if I lived nearer Mind you some days it's the only clean thing in the house

we tried the denture tablet thing, and it didn't work! We have the most disgusting toilet; its a nasty green plastic, which has gone white at the bottom. Wanted to get a new one, but for a whole load of complicated reasons we cant turn our water off. Same with the bath. so I need a tip for getting colour back aswell as cleaning!!

Ixel, could that be limescale though? Maybe if you manage to remove that the green will come through. Sorry you can't remove yours though

Shouldn't limescale have a bit of 'depth' to it though? This def looks just like fading. The bath, I suspect, is due to when I went through a fetish of having dettol in every bath . no idea what dh has put down the loo to cause it though...

I have the same problem so will try vinegar. Mine's an expensive CP Hart one so I'm not changing it. The baked-on filth happened when we had the bathroom decorated and the stupid decorators left the toilet lid up and it got all the muck and dust in there, its never been the same since and I could kill them!

Just a quick word of caution......If you are going to use caustic soda take great care. It will burn badly if you get it on your hands. Also make sure that you don't have any other chemicals in the toilet at the time, vinegar or bleach as you could get a chemical reaction started!
