Anyone remember Chelsea Girl?

I loved it as a kid. In the 80s my friends Dolores, Beth, and I went down to the local Chelsea Girl (so COOL!) and bought fluorescent fingerless gloves and matching pencil-thin belts. We thought we looked so HOT! Anyone else shop there as a kid?

Chelsea Girl and Snob weer my favourites

thelittleElf · 03/05/2007 11:15

OMG i remember that shop . I thought i was soooo grown up

southeastastra · 03/05/2007 11:15

yes! and my sisters used to love Snob though i was too young. Chelsea Girl used to be painted red and had lots of boa type things didn't it?

Fimbo · 03/05/2007 11:15

My fav shop in the 80's. My bf at the time liked Chelsea Man.

Boco · 03/05/2007 11:16

Yes, i spent my £10 a month clothing allowance there. Well cool, in fact, totally ace.

Fimbo · 03/05/2007 11:16

Ours changed to River Island (didn't shop there anymore after that )

mosschops30 · 03/05/2007 11:16

I loved chelsea girl and snob. I bought the most horrendous outfit from snob, a black lycra skirt and red 'matador' type jacket to go with it (very 80's) I thought I was chocolate at the time.
Also bought a bustier from there that my mum made me take back, obviously not appropriate for a 13 year old to wear a purple velvet basque type thing

fishie · 03/05/2007 11:16

didn't it turn into river island? or have i just invented that?

snob had those paper bags with silly winking girl on.

MrsThierryHenry · 03/05/2007 11:17

Ours became a River Island too, but now it's a McDonald's. How the mighty have fallen.

What was so 'Chelsea' about Chelsea Girl? Not exactly posh, was it?

Fimbo the one in norwich? That's the one i shopped in, until it changed into river island - and snob was opposite where topshop is now

southeastastra · 03/05/2007 11:18

yes they did all turn into river islands.

MARGOsBeenPlayingWithMyNooNoo · 03/05/2007 11:20

They were turned into River Island - and they're rotten employers and I will NEVER shop there again. If you like, you can join my one woman boycott (although if you join, it won't be a one woman boycott anymore!)

Hallgerda · 03/05/2007 11:26

MrsThierryHenry, I think there are quite a few Chelseas around who aren't posh

NotanOtter · 03/05/2007 11:26

omg snob!!!

MrsThierryHenry · 03/05/2007 11:27

Why were they such rotten employers? Pls bear in mind last year's MN fiasco over a certain childcare expert, so be cautioius when you reply!

MrsThierryHenry · 03/05/2007 11:28

You're right Hallgerda - my DH used to live on the World's End Estate. Now that most certainly is NOT posh!

I loved Chelsea Girl. I remember one of life's great turning points when I was twelve and my mum bought me loads of stuff to take on holiday. At the time I was attending public school and the trendiest thing I had worn so far was my school cape!

I went to Alsace wearing a twirly mini skirt, BRACES () fake Converses and a high side pony tail. I really thought I was the business.

nailpolish · 03/05/2007 11:30

i remember buying a puffball skirt out of chelsea girl

was my favourite shop too

unfortunately the reality was i had to get most of my clothes from What Every Woman Wants cos mum and dad were so skint!

Chelsea Girl was for birthday/xmas money only

Fimbo · 03/05/2007 11:30

Boco - no, I am from the land of the Jocks. My dh works for probably the largest employer in Norwich (should give it away1!) hence the move here! Have lived here for 6 years now.

MrsThierryHenry · 03/05/2007 11:31

Lady Macbeth, I applaud your pre-teen style. You WERE the business.

lucykate · 03/05/2007 11:32

i worked, for a very short time in chelsea girl in southport at the age of 15

LadyMacbeth · 03/05/2007 11:32

Oh, well, I thank you MrsT-H.

Boco · 03/05/2007 11:34

Oh ok Fimbo.

I guess i would have spotted you in Chelsea Girl, with that big old stripy body of yours and that trundle truck.

nailpolish · 03/05/2007 11:35

LOL at trundle truck

Boco · 03/05/2007 11:36

I had a puffball skirt from chelsea girl NP! I wore it to my first school disco, danced with a boy called Al who was gorgeous, but years later discovered he was gay.
