I know he couldn't in the old days of signatures, but now there is chip and pin I wondered if he could. I can't get out with the dcs - we are in the sticks, it's minus one and I can't see across the road. Dh can go but we'd rather pay on my card. Would this be a problem?

If they notice they would tell the bank and it would be classed as Fraud - it is also against the terms and conditions of your bank account and they could fine you and/or close your account. I wouldn't risk it!

I do this all the time, they never check.

morningpaper · 21/12/2006 09:28

'tis jolly foggy though isn't it?

PeckaRolloverAgain · 21/12/2006 09:28

i do all the time

morningpaper · 21/12/2006 09:30

You also wouldn't be covered for any fraudulent transactions - e.g. if someone took 5k out of your account and it was shown that your DH had used the cards, and therefore you had broken the terms and conditions for security on your account, the bank would not be liable to cover the fraud.

nearlythree · 21/12/2006 09:31

B*er. Foggy doesn't come close, it is astonishing.

Don't want to risk dh gretting carted off to the Scrubs, but otoh we have no milk, no dairy and NO CHOCOLATE!

If they did look at the card just make him take his card too & say "oh sorry i have given you the wrong card" i would not worry as it is a one off.

morningpaper · 21/12/2006 09:34

But if they looked at it as they REMOVED it then they might call the bank

I wouldn't risk it PERSONALLY! But then I've been caught out by fraudulent bank transactions in the past and if the bank hadn't covered it I would have been stuff, so I am v. cautious about that sort of thing

redbullandbump · 21/12/2006 09:35

we do it all the time and have never had a problem, how on earth do they do it in america you allways see it in the films like in pretty woman

Kelly1978GotRunOverByAReindeer · 21/12/2006 09:36

I do it a lot, didn't really consider that it was a breach of the terms of my account. Certain shops never even handle the card, so it's easy to do, and I tend to go to them if I need to use his.

kid · 21/12/2006 09:38

I use DH's card, it doesn't have Mr on it, just his first initial and surname. I will be using it today too for some Christmas shopping.

JINGLEBELLgianbun · 21/12/2006 15:11

I often use dp's card - much better that way round nearlythree ! In fact in the early days before the days when everywhere had chip and pin a chop asked for a signature and I said can I use the pin as it is my partner's card so they let me!!! !

JINGLEBELLgianbun · 21/12/2006 15:12

That would be a shop... and no, it was not in the butcher's !!!

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 21/12/2006 15:13

Technically no but yes. DH used mine in Portugal a lot because he didn't know the PIN numbers for his.

HeavenisInherwinterunderwear · 21/12/2006 15:37

It's usually you that puts the card in and takes it out of the machine, they very rarely look at it in the shops.

hoxtonchick · 21/12/2006 15:40

why doesn't he use your card to get cash, then pay for the shopping using that?

nearlythree · 21/12/2006 21:57

Thanks for all the replies, everyone! Dh is doing our shopping now - he is insane - I can't see our front hedge it's so foggy! [anxious emoticon]

thats what my husband would do Hoxtonchick

BaileysMilkshake · 21/12/2006 22:24

I have taken DH's card to a major supermarket and used it succesfully without being questioned or anything.

With most chip and pin the checkout peple dont even touch the card, although in this case she said she had to swipe it, but sill did'nt look at the name, and it has DH's name on it rather than just an initial!

paulaplumpbottom · 21/12/2006 22:28

I always think that is really lax, I mean it makes it easy if my husband or I have to use eachothers card. but doesn't that make it easier for other people to use it to?

BaileysMilkshake · 21/12/2006 22:31

PPB, part of me was relived as I needed to get some bits and he could'nt get to the shop. But the other half of me was annoyed at the lack of security.

Then again DH and I know each others PIN's. If someone nicks your card they dont have that advantage!

CountTo10LordsaLeaping · 21/12/2006 22:32

I've been using my dp's card and noone has said a word. Have even had to sign where there is no chip and pin and they haven't even checked the signature!!!

paulaplumpbottom · 21/12/2006 22:33

Well they would if they saw you enter it at some point. Its probably easier done than yo think.
