HELP MA BOAB!! We've been stranded in the house by flooding since Wednesday and we can't leave!!!! (Wanna see pix of our misery?)

bobsmum · 16/12/2006 16:51

Ok I know we're in the sticks and we should've expected it, but it's still miserable.

We don't have a Christmas tree, toilet paper is reaching critical and there are 3 tea bags left in the tin.

Our house is fine, but the only road to civilisation is blocked with floodwater. Even the neighbour's LandRover can't take it!

Go on rubberneckers - have a look - and give me some ideas of what on earth we can be getting up to???

No post either and the nearest post box (3 miles away) is currently submerged so there'll be no Xmas cards from us either.

Loch across the road

former campsite!

oh fuck!!

GhostOfMumsnet · 16/12/2006 16:53

Oh bobsmum. What a nightmare!
I think the only way to save yourself is to be on MN as much as possible!

MistleToo · 16/12/2006 16:53

send for a Tesco delivery!

expatinscotland · 16/12/2006 16:53

Bummer, bobs!

Had a student in from Dornoch yesterday. He said he was going to try to float back over for the holidays yesterday; that the family garage had a lot of standing water in it, but the house was alright.

It was a pretty dry here in the lowlands today, but awfully muddy.

Hope it's dry there, too!

bobsmum · 16/12/2006 16:56

Tesco never recognised out postcode anyway!

SEriously though the road is impassable and we're well an dtruly stuck here. Just as well we freeze our milk!

No-one can use the road or has been able to. I've seen one fuel truck make it on Thursday but apart from that it's like a post holocaust thingy.

OMG! Poor you (especially about the toilet paper). Is there any other way of getting to a shop, like walking cross-country? I guess you've exhausted all the board games?

bobsmum · 16/12/2006 16:59

THe nearest shop (Spar) is 11 miles away. I'm sure we can pool our resources with a couple of neighbours if it comes to that. One way of getting to know each other better I guess!

Yeah thankfully most of the time it's heaven here. Feels like we're on holiday most of the time.

Anyone selling a cheap LandRover and we might be able to get out before next Monday to buy a turkey????

Bloody nora bobsmum!

Has this ever happened before? Does the local council or maybe the police help out in such situations?

Only 3 teabags left, OMG.

DumbledoresFairy · 16/12/2006 17:15

If the toilet paper runs out, have you any newspaper? Well, that was what was used in the war!

Alternatively, cut up some unwanted clothes into squares and hey presto! re-usuable wipes! Think what fun you can have washing them! Well, it will give you something to do.

Tea bags? Hmm trickier. Well obviously, you will have to re-use them a lot. Got any loose leaf tea sitting at the back of the cupboard you have forgotten about? How about herbal teas?

Thank goodness for the internet anyway.

bobsmum · 16/12/2006 17:18

No - the road ends 3 miles from our house, so we're pretty much forgotten out here. I'm not sure if the council have even twigged there are people out here at all!

A few people have tried in 4X4s and pick ups and then turned back. Actually ne 4X4 made it on Friday afternoon too but the floodwater screwed up the headlights and leaked in the front doors , but we've just got a Ford Ka and a Berlingo!! No use out here. We're just city slickers.

There's video of dh and ds venturing forth - I'll see if I can get that up too.

Ah the joys!!

Reusable wipes - have a large stock soaking in tea tree oil atm

Thank God for reusable nappies! I feel like I'm in Lost stuck in a hatch!

bobsmum, you will dine out on this event for years you know. Plus you and dh will remember this Christmas all your lives. I know it must have its stresses, but try not to worry too much.

What is the history of flooding where you are? ie how long has the house been cut off for before?

bobsmum · 16/12/2006 17:31

Apparently it's not far off it's highest in 200 years. Most people can't remember it being this bad, so it's a not-in-living-memory type flood.

I know this'll be a great story eventually, but I just want to get out!!

Someone did mention something about a reservoir emptying into the loch which might mean there are controls which haven't been properly used or something.....

Did I mention our phone's been cut off too? But internet access still working.

It'll be loooonely this Christmas.....

OMGoodness. Hope it clears soon xx

bobsmum · 16/12/2006 17:48

THe problem is there are 4 bad areas of flooding between us and the village, so it's more than a shuttle service needed.

As the floods are in a dip - it's too deep at the deepest bit, but not deep enough at the edges for a boat IYSWIM.

Waders might be the way forward.

I want dh to attempt an escape tomorrow - surely it must have reduced by then??

It's only rained a few times today. My mum was saying it's now been 40 days and nights of rain!!

bobsmum · 16/12/2006 17:51

Mobiles are working ok-ish - not a great signal, but if you wave it about a bit we're ok!!

We're a semi detached cottage, so not totally isolated. We'll be swapping the contents of our freezer soon I'm sure.

There are decaff minging teabags from preggy days at the back of the cupboard somewhere too.

Did I mention FIL is stuck here too - I feel like I'm writing a sit com pilot!

Bluebear · 16/12/2006 17:55

Can you use skype to make phone calls via the internet?
Hope water goes down soon - 3 Tea bags is critical level!

bobsmum · 16/12/2006 18:00

Skype up and running already thank goodness. Dh has been shouting at the computer screen all day - it's quite unnerving!

Still have much coffee beanage in the freezer though

Have just found more toilet roll next to the bed

och waily waily waily! Am sitting here trying to think of a way of someone using a remote controlled model plane to airlift tea bags to you (cos that is a nightmare as far as I'm concerned. I'd be fine wiping me bits of leaves but god forbid I couldn't get a cuppa ....)

Wishing you some good strong sunshine to dry up the floods a little....
