moving to Bedfordshire

we're considering a move away from where we are now to Bedfordshire. Not 100% certain about it but lots of reasons for us to make the move. We currently live in a lovely friendly village with great school and wondered what villages in Beds are like. Need somewhere very friendly to newbies! Any MNers have recommendations? I'd be so grateful otherwise it's sticking a pin in the map!

I'm just here sticking up for dunstable really,ok the shops are great but the town as a whole is great, and the schools are excellent.

I'm a Lutonian and have recently moved to Dunstable and get really irritated when it gets tarred with the same brush as Luton,it really is a great little town.

As for nice villages Ampthill's very nice.

MuffinMclay · 30/10/2007 12:48

Dunstable Downs are lovely.

ska · 26/11/2007 15:45

I think it depends where abouts you live in Luton. I live in luton (stopsley 5 mins from airport) moved here because DH had a house already and i like it/feel safer walking then Hemel Hempstead where i had lived for nearly 30 years.

Santasmissyontheside · 26/11/2007 19:00

yeah but i recently was broken into so i'm afraid i'm quite negative at the moment. we're limbury way.

i used to live in potters bar and felt much better and safer there.

ska i don't know any but i asked about some on here a while back when we were exploring options and i'm sure that there was a few if not the girls are really helpful

ska · 27/11/2007 19:40

santasetc thanks - i need to get something sorted out really quickly as i have to getback to work in January and am a bit stressed about it being in a new area!!

Santamissy, my dh comes from Eaton Bray!!

rantinghousewife · 27/11/2007 19:52

We're the other side of beds now though.
I'm personally not crazy about Dunstable but then my ILs live there!

Katisha · 27/11/2007 20:02

I am in a village near Leighton Buzzard, not far from Hockliffe. Hockliffe is somewhat dominated by the A5 but there quite a lot of new housing there.
In fact Leighton Buzzard is about to be clobbered with an awful lot of new housing, and has already had a lot built in the last few years.
Schools are fine in LB. V happy with the one DSs are at.
Bedfordshire is a bit of a forgotten county, and I think it is underrated.

rantinghousewife · 27/11/2007 20:04

Hockliffe is nice, much better than Dunstable.

Santasmissyontheside · 28/11/2007 23:13

its amazing the amount of new houses going up in LB considering that the actual town centre is quite small!

ska i will keep my ears open!

rantinghousewife small world!

namitababe · 29/10/2017 14:33

beds is boring. it's nice if you like countryside, or tranquil environments, but apart from that its scants.

Bedford is pretty average, not as bad as people make out imho. But Luton is a dump, and Dunstable is OK, but normal for a town of its size.

Leighton Buzzard, Ampthill, Flitwick, Biggleswade, Sandy, Shefford, etc. are all small towns that are pretty similar. Quaint, nice houses, and shops, but not much else.

I prefer Herts, there is more to do and see, even the newer towns with uglier buildings like Stevenage and Hemel have more to do and experience.

Beds is for people who like a slow pace of life really. Just avoid Luton. Bedford is better than Luton, and at least has the river, marina, castle, old buildings, and imho better architecture and entertainment.

Thinkingofausername1 · 29/10/2017 14:49

I think people need to be careful slating Luton. I lived there for a long time and used to feel safe. I think people should stop listening to the press. You always get crime and crap wherever you live. I agree what someone said about stopsley is a lovely part of Luton.

FFS why can't these be locked or the warning reinstated?!
