I want a really organised storage system, but a) dont want to spend alot b) awkward room size/ shape.

I do this for a living and cant for the life of me sort this out in my own damn house. I think its my scrambled 14wks post natal head. Im a closet pedantic about organisation and would love to have specific boxes for each type of toy/activity but on the surface it looks like Im a very very cluttered crazy person right now!

Ive been trying to get dd to keep it organised by tidying each thing as she goes along , but its so all over the place its not easy for her. We have 2 huge footstalls that you have to remove the (quite heavy) lid for and 2 quite big woven boxes with hinged lids and also a 2 door cabinet full of stuff that dd2 will start using soon. Its all full , due to my familys donations of stuff and more stuff !!!!

Idealy would love some big unit thing with nice big baskets in it. Ive looked at the Argos things , but they are going to take over the room.

Me and dh sat this week trying to work it out but nothing seems to be right. What does everyone else do.

I might post a piccy of space to show problemo.

Pack half of it away and rotate.

You certainly need to get rid of some of it altogether before christmas.

We have one big hamper type seagrass chest in the living room.

We have one storage table in the kitchen/family room

DD has a big double built in cupboard and a single built in cupboard in her room which is choc full of storage boxes and shelves.

Hmm thinking were we can store half of it, we lost our loft to having it converted , the shed is mildewy and stinks. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

I know, need a bigger house !!!!

It does sound like you have LOADS of toys. I think you need to be ruthless and get some of it on ebay or to a charity shop

madmarchhare · 25/11/2006 16:07

DS HAS to help tidy up every day (appreciate I only have DS though)

We have two open wicker type baskets in the living room and he has various tub/baskets/boxes in his bedroom.

Oh and he has a shelf on the living room bookcase

The twins' bed room got so bad and one won't dispose of anything. He and I spent 10 hours 2 weeks ago clearing out and it was so worth it. He woudln't let anything be given away but we bought a lot of plastic containers with lids and put the toys in those they don't often use and put them in a big cupboard/eaves off their room.

melsy · 25/11/2006 16:46

lol xenia think my dd1 3yrs has my hoarding tendancy , theres a foot high pile of all her drawings in the chest under the chalk board, which she decided to empty this afternoon. We did get her to pile it up (me sittin there dying to chuck it all) , but she would have had a fissy hit !!!!!

I went to Ikea and got plastic boxes and put different toys in each box (cars, lego, animals etc) and then stacked the boxes in DSs bedroom. When he wants to play with stuff we bring the box down and take it back up when he has finished (be it half an hour or a week later). Also have a basket of toys in the corner all the time.

I am pretty ruthless, if anything gets broken and cannot be fixed it gets binned/recycled and if I think a toy is not being played with I put it in the garage and if no one asks for it after a month or so it goes to charity.

curlysmum · 25/11/2006 21:22

Hi I got the stacking pink plastic boxes from ikea and do the same thing one is Barbie, one is jigsaw's , one is girly bags, dressing up stuff, I got 5 and she get one box at a time then has to put it all back before dragging out more stuff , has working quite well too.

melsy · 25/11/2006 21:34

WestCountryLass thats a fabulous idea , really great and not a huge expense , might mean dd has to have a think about what she wants to play with rather than a mad free for all with all of it down here. Means we will have to empty EVERYTHING and re sort into catagories ! OOH my organisational me is getting excited , how sad on a sat night, really living life lol!!!!

Ive jst thoght of a downside , dd is not very trustworthy and might find a way of emptying said boxes ALL OVER BEDROOM early in the morning. Id have to lock the craft one otherwise room could be glittered by 6am !!!

Can't believe i've had a fabulous idea, I am sure my brain melted the day I had DS!!!!

It works for us and agree with others who have said the plastic boxes are not expensive.

melsy · 25/11/2006 22:16

funnt jasjas I thought the same when I put the piccy on, but it was alot worse when in it and dd had go more out today, like 40 sheets of A4 paper too !!

WestCountryLass did any nasty things happen with all the bits being in his room???? shes getting a little ermmm cheeky about things !
