...hairdresser said this is the best way to do it, and that he should have another 2 cuts like that so that his hair grows well. Is she right? Looks a bit extreme...

what!!! no no way.

she is talking out of her backside.

probably easiest way for her to do it.

MrsBadger · 04/11/2006 20:09

sounds like rubbish to me - long hair needs trimming to keep it in good nick but cutting baby-short hair to make it 'grow well'?

take him to your hairdresser next time...

flock · 04/11/2006 20:57

Hmmm. He had lovely hair, too! Don't think we'll be using her again.

probably did it too short and saw your horrified face and thought on her feet.

NotQuiteCockney · 04/11/2006 21:04

This is rubbish, but it's very popular rubbish. Lots of cultures believe babies' and kids' hair should be cut very short until it grows in nice and thick.

It doesn't actually work, but it passes the time, while you wait for the hair to grow in well ...

FrannyonFire · 04/11/2006 21:08

A friend told me that Native Americans do this, and it gave me pause as they do usually have the most fantastic thick hair. But then I realised it was bollocks and just a racial thing; their hair would be like that whatever they did.

moondog · 04/11/2006 21:09

Bollocks.
My ds has beautiful blonde curls tumbling down his back.
If my dh cut them i would kill him.
Who wants a kid who looks like a thug??

NotQuiteCockney · 04/11/2006 21:11

It's also popular in Bengali/Muslim culture, as well (not sure which). Actually, I think it's popular in Indian/Hindu culture, too.

flock · 04/11/2006 21:12

Just seems like poor timing, too, now it's finally getting properly cold!

He does look a bit like a thug atm, tho has a sweet enough face not to look TOO menacing. Still, am mourning those curls!

Sorry but I found the opposite with everyone else on this thread! dd had her first proper haircut at 15 months and it did grow back thicker after a couple more haircuts.

ds was only about 9 months when he had his first hair cut and his hair is incredibly thick now - but then so is mine!

AitchTwoOh · 04/11/2006 21:18

my chum, who's a muslim, shaved her babies' heads just after they were born, and told me 'if you lot did this you'd have much better hair, you know...' i believe she meant all non-muslims.

she told me that the hair that's been inside the womb is dirty so you need to shave it off to make way for the fresh new hair coming through.
anyway, i cannot deny her children have excellent hair, whereas dd's is a little straggly.

tribpot · 04/11/2006 21:20

ds is the king baby of having lots of hair - he's had two major scalpings (aged 16 months) cos he doesn't like it being done, so we do it radically in order to avoid doing it too often.

BIGlilBUBU · 04/11/2006 21:21

Lol my dp took ds to get his first hair cut too, ds ended up with a skinhead. Oh he looked so funny, although it wasnt the hairdressers idea. Dp got inpatient "Just do a number one all over". Apparently he hadnt realised it would turn out quite so short. Ds was in hats for weeks untill it grew back. You'll get used to it.

flock · 04/11/2006 21:24

Well, if there is any truth at all in it I guess he'll get the benefit. I won't let another scalping occur, though!

It's only hair - it does grow back!

Ds has curlyish hair (dh has curly hair) and it looks very messy when it gets long so he has a crewcut every time.

Skinhead does not equal thug fgs, thugee even.

cece · 04/11/2006 21:28

When you take him to have a haircut. You have to be very clear with hairdressers about boys haircuts.

I WANT A PROPER BOYUS HAIRCUT. NO CLIPPERS.

It is the only way

cece · 04/11/2006 21:29

whoops BOYS not BOYUS!

flock · 04/11/2006 21:32

Cece - good advice! On the plus side he was very good and apparently quite enjoyed the experience, so that bodes well for next time sans clippers. And of course, as Mercy says, it does grow back!

Poor FunkyDude only has about 3 hairs, can you imagine? And unfortunately for him bald men are plenty in my family so if he does grow some, it won't last!

flock · 04/11/2006 21:36

How old is FunkyDude?
