Where did you go for your honeymoon?

My OH and I are getting married next year. Today we were discussing honeymoon options.

I'm looking for some destination inspiration and interested to know where you all went. What was great about it? What was bad about it? Would you recommend your destination or advise against it?...

Cook Islands and French Polynesia

Lots of snorkelling and diving, interspersed with intense hammock lounging and flamboyant cocktails

Twas fantastic

Not as a honeymoon but I went to Rio 2 years ago and then flew to Iguassa and stayed on the Argentian side in a rainforest lodge place. That was an amazing trip as combined beautiful beaches and scenery with lots of sightseeing and activities. 2 years before that I went to Cape Town which was incredible but I'm not sure how good the weather would be in August.

We talked about the Maldives as lots of people really rate it. MIL & FIL went and said it was out of this world. But they're nearing their 60's so were looking to relax and not do much. We're in our 30's and want to do a bit more while we've still got some stamina left! Its definitely on our bucket list, but wonder if thats best saved for a little later on?

Porto Santo
It was 21 years ago and it only had one hotel then. We had to fly from Madeira on one of those bouncy little aeroplanes!!

MouseandChops1 · 17/08/2014 21:25

We went to Malaysia and then to Borneo. It was amazing. City break in KL, beach life in Borneo followed by trekking up the river in a boat for 3days to an isolated island to see baby turtles hatch. Highly recommended

Some fantastic places posted, lots of ideas for me to be googling! Keep em coming... so many places we hadn't even thought of but all sound amazing

This sounds awful but I was a bit bored in the Maldives(!!) beyond the beauty there is little else unless you dive. Some of the Thai Islands are spectacular and the standards of accommodation are high.

St Lucia is lovely, as is Sri Lanka.

angeltulips · 17/08/2014 21:28

Yorkshire - have you thought about doing a driving trip down the coast of California? Big sur, Sonoma etc? One of the most beautiful places in the world, I think - and SO easy!

Cantstayawake · 17/08/2014 21:32

We went to South America. Lima in Peru first, Quito and The amazon basin and machu Piccu then the Galápagos Islands last. It was hectic so wouldn't suggest all of it but a smaller mixture of the 2 could be what you're looking for. The Galapagos has beaches and can be a place to relax with stuff to do aswell.

nomoreminibreaks · 17/08/2014 21:52

We went to Kenya - 3 days in a hotel in Mombasa then 4 day safari and back for another week at the beach. We loved it as it had the right mix of activity and relaxation. I'm not 100% sure we'd choose Kenya now as it doesn't seem to be the safest place but you can do similar holidays elsewhere.

helensburgh · 17/08/2014 21:54

This will out me for sure.

My parents caravan, wait for it wait for it.......

In their drive!

helensburgh · 17/08/2014 21:55

We had spent all our money on the wedding by taking everyone to a lovely hotel on an island for the whole weekend and paid for everything.

Annunziata · 17/08/2014 21:57

Sicily. It was amazing, but I think we would have been happy anywhere because our parents were so strict with us. It was our first holiday together :)

Willabywallaby · 17/08/2014 22:01

Australia, with a stop off in Fuji and San Francisco on the way home. Only way I could get DH there.

I loved planning it, stayed in loads of different places, and I'd always wanted to go.

We did go for a month though, probably tricky to sell that one to MIL.

Mintyy · 17/08/2014 22:04

Dublin and then Galway, a week in total.

CointreauVersial · 17/08/2014 22:13

We had a few relaxing days in Italy, in a posh hotel on the coast near Rome, then we caught a ferry to Corsica and met up with DM and DSDad who had flown out there with DS and DD1, and spent a week all together in a big villa.

As the DCs were so young (2.5y and 11mo) we couldn't contemplate a massive holiday without them.

And DH has been able to dine out on the story ever since, that he spent his honeymoon with his MIL. Grin

Sri Lanka. Fabulous. Toured the island with our own guide staying in different hotels one in a nature reserve, one an old tea factory, a bungalow in the mountains, a colonial villa. Visited lots of amazing cultural sites, saw some beautiful scenery, visited a game reserve and saw Indian elephants in the wild. Our driver/guide would often stop at the roadside and buy fruits like the most juicy mangos , mangosteen and rambutan for us to try. The food is amazing, fish curry etc. we ended the honeymoon with 4 night at a hotel by the beach.
It was the best holiday we have ever had!

Ladyofthehouse · 17/08/2014 22:25

We did a week in Sri Lanka and then a week in Maldives. Absolutely amaZing. Would go back to Sri Lanka again tomorrow. Maldives was lovely too but it was what we expected...whereas we were both blown away by Sri Lanka.

Y0rkshirePudding · 18/08/2014 07:48

Lol @ helensburgh... how romantic x

Whatever we do it can only be for 2 weeks max, our DS will only be 2.9 old when we go and he's a bit of a handful. She's already said "it's ok we'll have him for a week". But OH has other idea's and has said he's going to talk her around to 2 weeks.

Really loving some of these suggestions though. Sri Lanka looks beautiful, but hasn't there been some political unrest over there? Thousands of innocent people killed etc?

I don't want to go anywhere unsafe...

New Zealand. Hired a car and stayed in about 10 places over 3 weeks. Beautiful country with huge variety of scenery and attractions: beaches, glaciers, hot springs, glow worm caves, fjords, lakes, vineyards, dolphins, penguins, whales, seafood, skydiving, bungee jumping, hot air balloon rides, white water rafting, kayaking, hiking, and lots more. Loved it and would go back again if we could as there's so much we didn't see/couldn't fit in.

If we only had 2 weeks I would probably just do South Island.

TheTravellingLemon · 18/08/2014 08:01

We did 3 days in Singapore, followed by 2 weeks in Borneo and then two days in Kuala Lumpur. It was amazing. Borneo was a life long dream and it very much lived up to expectations. The wildlife is just mind blowing and, of course, it's worth it just to be able to see the orangutans. Experience of a lifetime.

LadyLuck81 · 18/08/2014 08:01

Mauritius. Upgraded beach front room. Trips into the island, meeting giant tortoises, lounging on the beach and eating lovely food. Ten wonderful days straight after the wedding. I loved it.

Missunreasonable · 18/08/2014 08:01

Tortola, st kitts, Nevis, Anguilla and st Martin. We stayed mainly in st kitts but Island hopped around to experience the other islands. We had the perfect blend of relaxation, sightseeing and doing stuff such as taking a train ride through the rainforest and horse riding down the beach.

eurochick · 18/08/2014 08:03

Borneo. It was amazing. We saw turtles hatching, orang utans, monkeys, crocs and more. We spent just over a week in Island and jungle lodges and the last few days in luxury at as shangri la.

I love the Maldives but I am a water baby, so do a fair bit of snorkelling and diving there. I've been to three different islands and would say that people in their 30s and honeymooners seem to make up most of the tourists. You don't see many 60+ folks there. There isn't much to do, but that is what makes it so wonderfully relaxing.

HenriettaTurkey · 18/08/2014 08:09

We went to Kruger Safari for 5 days, then Swaziland (which was just beautiful), back to S.Africa for the beautiful Indian Ocean & beaches. Then some luxury glamping in the African bush. It was amazing: and was last 2 weeks of August. People think because it's Africa it'll be winter, which technically it is but it reached high 30s - although was 5c at 6am when you get up to start safari. That just means you see loads of beautiful animals in their natural environment, then you come back to your bungalow, have a braii, glass of wine & sleep well because it's not crazy hot at night.

Perfect! And totally different from our usual European City breaks. Grin
