Have just lifted up the bath mat (suckery bottomed one) in dd's bathroom and the cleaner has obviously not been picking it up and scrubbing and it is all covered in skanky greyish black stuff that has stained the rubber. Don't want to chuck it out as it is fun, has a load of goldfish on it disappearing down a plug hole and she loves it (plus cost £25!)

How can I clean the skank off it?

What about one of those bathroom mousse type products? After you've rinsed the gunk off? Cif mousse or similar.

Sounds revolting though. What's the floor like underneath?

It won't get rid of the mildewy spots but the skank and germs etc will shift with bleach - a softish kitchen brush is good for getting under the suckers - dilute some with water, pour it on and scrub it gently in diagonal lines - very therapeutic. (Or else use mould and mildew remover if you have it, it's chlorine based).

In future, turn the mat upside down when the bath's empty!

You can't get the stain off I'm afraid, god knows I've tried with mine. Give it a good scrub, bleach it and run it through the washing machine - if yours has a pattern it might fade enough to be fairly unnoticable, mine's white (well white and skanky grey now - time to buy a new one!)

Maybe a tub of bicarbonate of soda in a bath?
Or would that bleach it too?
Shame though, it's a nice bath mat.

Cif cream, v hot water and elbow grease are good at shifting the gunk but I can't get rid of the grey spots either. One of those Ajax/Flash shower sprays is also good for rinsing the stuff off when it builds up but mine got a bit beyond it before I did anything about it

hmmm have squirted with cif and will scrub. Don't think the stains will hurt her, will just make sure is washed a lot. The top looks fine. thanks all

CD, I have used with black bottom for years, on and off. It's only a stain, not actually dirty, IYSWIM.

Ours (an ordinary boring one from Boots...yours is much nicer CD!) can be washed at 40C in the washing machine. Even so I find it doesn't completely get rid of the stains once it's gone like that. I recently bought a new one because the last one got so yukky. Now I religiously lift it every night after the bath and the new one is keeping fine.

BK we tried without one too but ds prefers the security of the mat (he likes to stand up quite a bit in the bath). Like CD, we occasionally use oilatum or balneum which makes the bath very slippery. I never use the mat myself.

cd, i threw it out as it was disgusting, am still yet to buy one, but wen i do, i will hang it on side of bath wen not using it.... i have learnt my lesson!!

We take our bath mat out every day let it dry and fold it up, but it still gets very stained and generally yucky.
