probably am due one but I'm pregnant now and I go when they tell me to anyway [good girl emoticon] it's not pleasant but gotta be done.

2Happy · 14/09/2006 08:29

Twig - a bit of a hijack (but it bumps this up the active convos ) but do you know a lot about smears? Specifically smear changes when you're bfing?

nailpolish · 14/09/2006 08:31

twig ive got one next week

have to take the dd's as there is no-one to look after them

will have to be a brave mummy !

singersgirl · 14/09/2006 08:32

I am a year early, but want to get one done for various reasons. It seems to be really difficult to fit one in mid-cycle, because we've been away over the summer, and also because my cycles are so short now!

Will book at start of next period.

anorak · 14/09/2006 08:39

I go once a year as I satisfy some of the criteria for being 'high risk'

Bloody good thing I do as I would be dead if I didn't.

Even once a year was only just often enough to catch my pre-cancer ten years ago in time to have colcoscopy and 6mm trimmed off my cervix. The doctor agreed with me that I would have died if I'd stuck to 3-yearly tests.

ghosty · 14/09/2006 08:48

Thanks Twig ...
I am due one but keep putting off the appt as I struggle to find time to go to the doctor without DD in tow ...
But will ring for an appointment next week ok????

QueenEagle · 14/09/2006 08:56

Mine isn't due until early next year, but good thread twig.

Does anyone know when teenage girls should start having them? I thought it was from 16 or when they become sexually active but someone dh knows was a virgin and developed cervical cancer in her mid to late teens.

1Baby1Bump · 14/09/2006 08:59

just saying to dh i have never had one! i know thats really bad isnt it?
do you get a letter from doc inviting you?
ive never recieved one so totally forget about it.
have been sexually active for 7 years and had two babies. are you supposed to have your first one after 3 years of being sexually active?

wartywarthog · 14/09/2006 09:20

my gp said i shouldn't have one until i've stopped b/f because my hormones will be all over the place. is he talking crap?

Aimsmum · 14/09/2006 09:40

Message withdrawn

2Happy · 14/09/2006 09:47

Warty - that's what I was wanting to know. I had a smear when ds was about 5m and was exclusively bfed. It came back borderline, and was due to be repeated after 6months, but I got pg again! So when this one's delivered I'll be long overdue, but (I hope) I will be bfing again, so is there any point having a smear - but if I don;t and I bf as long as I have this time (just stopped at 15m) then it'll be a very long time since the borderline smear. What to do?!

SoupDragon · 14/09/2006 09:51

Mine must be due soon as I'm sure I had it when DS2 was a baby and he's 5 now. Am expecting a reminder

JessaJam · 14/09/2006 09:53

1Baby1Bump - book a smear!

I'm overdue. Got a reminder either while I was pregnant or just after having ds so didn't book it. But have had another reminder since then and I always remember when I am having my period and think "I must remember to book in a week or two" and then forget again... [guilty]

I will, I will.

Gobbledigook · 14/09/2006 10:00

Oh, d'you know I can't even remember when my last one was? I think I might have had one after ds3 (2 yrs ago). Need to check that actually. THanks for reminder!

southeastastra · 14/09/2006 10:02

go on girls book one! especially if you haven't had one. it's really ok just relax it's over so quickly and you'll feel better once you've done it!

dramaqueen72 · 14/09/2006 10:03

I did it!! I finally stopped muttering about how I ought to go and have a smear, and actually did it. Wasnt as bad as I remembered either. Thankyou for this kick up the arse reminder thread!!

LIZS · 14/09/2006 10:16

Went yesterday , although apparently the sample may not be good enough to test as possibility of an infection so may have to go through it all again. Have friend who discovered she had cervical cancer when her 2nd dd was about 18 months old, had a hysterectomy but fingers crossed is now fine.

izzybiz · 14/09/2006 10:22

I had one earlier this year, after 8 years .

Cant believe i left it so long.

Result was clear luckily.

Seashells · 14/09/2006 10:26

I'm due one.
Had appointment couple of weeks ago but typically came on that very morning.
I have to go every 6 months as have always had slight changes and haven't been since before I got pregnant, baby is now 4months old. grrrr.
Got to go, got to go....

lucykate · 14/09/2006 10:30

i'm due one. and a coil check at the same time. i will ring and make an appointment, its actually easier now we've moved, at our new doctors, the nurse does them so i don't have to go all the way to the family planning clinic at the hospital, no excuse really not to go.

pageturner · 14/09/2006 10:49

OK, OK, I've booked it for Monday. I was only a bit overdue, honest...

meowmix · 14/09/2006 10:54

GO BOOK! I've just had treatment for this cancer and the treatment is a lot lot lot less pleasant than the smear. It really isn't worth avoiding the smears as unpleasant as they are, the stress and worry of having cancer lasts a lot longer than the 3 minutes a smear takes.

(I'm all clear now by the way - thank god I had that smear when I did, I dread to think what would have happened if I'd waited a year or so)

sunnydelight · 14/09/2006 14:18

Glad you're ok meowmix. Many years ago I had a smear at my GPs surgery and got a letter spouting some technical jargon and saying "be sure to get it done again next year". Went to the hospital for something else a little while after and consultant freaked when I repeated technical jargon. Had treatment within the week! DON'T PUT IT OFF.

Beauregard · 14/09/2006 14:27

I had a reminder about 3 months ago

Twiglett · 14/09/2006 16:43
