I'm sure we'll prove THIS theory!!!

Okay, the last 2 theories of mine were proved to be incorrect, but I feel far more confident about this one

I think that first born children look more like their dad than their mum and vice versa with 2nd borns (not sure about susequent children yet!)

My dd is a dead ringer for dh whereas ds looks far more like me.

Go on then, prove me wrong

OP posts:
Janh · 24/03/2004 22:31

Sorry, posey.....other way round here!

Janh · 24/03/2004 22:32

I have a theory - haven't started a thread on it (yet) - a majority of mothers name their eldest child with their own initial.

???

carla · 24/03/2004 22:40

Sorry - friends call our dds (1st) Carla and (2nd) David.

Kayleigh · 24/03/2004 22:41

Posey, your theory rings true here. Ds1 looks like dh and ds2 (says my mum) looks like me when I was younger.
And people say I (firstborn) look like my Dad. Never heard anyone say my brother looks like my mum though.

And Janh - sorry, but a definite no to your theory. My firstborn does not have the same initial as me and he doesn't have the same initial as dh either. I don't have the same initial as either of my parents and nor does dh's eldest sister.

carla · 24/03/2004 22:46

And, irritatently, "David" gets far more many compliments.....

Tinker · 24/03/2004 22:47

Oooo, Jan, your theory works for me! Not for my mum though but, hmm, yes for her mum!

forestfly · 24/03/2004 22:53

I agree, don't think its one for the books just yet though

carla · 24/03/2004 23:06

Janh, only just realised the awfulness of having two dds whose christian names begin with 'A' , and whose surnames begin with 'B'. Be there early!!!

Chandra · 25/03/2004 01:03

My old sister is an exact replica of my mother, me, a portrait of my father, my younger sister a combination of both, so... sorry it seems that the idea of the DNA genetic information randomly passed at conception is more feasible...

I look like my mum (2nd child)
My sister looks more like me and mum since she became pregnant with her first child!

our dd does not seem to look like either of us yet - and people say that to us too!

fio2 · 25/03/2004 07:35

me and my sister both looked like my mum

My kids look like their dad

Posey where do you get these theories from?

Clarinet60 · 25/03/2004 11:45

It's true in our case.
I've often wondered how, though, as first borns aren't often really first borns, are they? I mean, they are first survivors, but they are often not first pregnancies.

mothernature · 25/03/2004 11:50

Our ds1 (14) looks like both of us, ds2 and dd1 (Twins) (13) are replicas of myself and dh, I am 4th child in family and look just like my dear departed mum, she was only child and looked just like her dad! Dh 1st born looks like his mum and dad sil looks nothing like either of them...

hmb · 25/03/2004 11:57

Sorry, I've done too much genetics to go along with this one. It is all the luck of the draw, and which parent has the dominant genes.

motherinferior · 25/03/2004 11:59

My dad is white, my mum is Asian. I'm white so everyone assumes I look like my dad and my sister is darker skinned than me so sometimes they think she looks like our mum. But most of the time they don't actually look beyond the skin colour. I personally have no idea.

Dp is a second child. He looks exactly like all his three brothers. Honestly. It is quite disturbing seeing them all lined up together. They look a fair bit like both parents, I think.

Quite a lot of people say dd1 looks like me and dd2 looks like dp (sorry). However, they also look so uncannily like each other that I have been asked if they are in fact delayed twins or clones

prettycandles · 25/03/2004 13:33

Not a bad theory as far as my family is concerned - ds looks so much like his dad that I get 'lucky you were at the birth' jokes all the time. Dd on the other hand, looks a bit like me at her age, but not nearly as much as ds looks like dh.

Doesn't work so well if you go up a generation, though. My big brother looks very much like my maternal grandmother's twin brother (according to her) and not much like my dad (according to me), whereas my little sister and I are the spitting image of my mum.

Blackduck · 25/03/2004 13:45

Not true with my family...older brother doesn't strongly resemble either (but is aparently like my mums father...) second brother is spit of my dad....I'm third - very like my dad too...

Clarinet60 · 25/03/2004 13:54

Which parent has the dominant genes theory works until you get siblings looking vastly dissimilar, with same parents. Perhaps you mean dominant genes at that conception, hmb, but it obviously varies.

suedonim · 25/03/2004 14:14

Ds1 looks like dh as does dd1 (baby no3) while ds2 is like my mum but especially like her father. Dd2, I can't tell yet but I think she'll be another one taking after dh.

I was the image of my mum when I was young but an now the image of my dad!! Younger bro is the spit of my mum.

Janh, your theory works in this house!

hmb · 25/03/2004 14:24

Well a dominant gene is always a dominant gene. But remember that you only pass on one of two genes, and only one of those may be dominant.

For example a brown eyed person may have two dominant brown genes or one dominant brown and one recessive blue. When a sperm or an egg is produced only one of these genes is passed on. So the dominant gene may not make up part of the new conception. But dominant always wins out. And it is all down to chance which of the two genes gets passed onto the sex cell. So which parent you look like is down to chance, and not birth order.

Janstar · 25/03/2004 14:49

my ds is my 3rd child but my husband's first - so how do I judge?

tiredemma · 25/03/2004 15:42

absolutly, ds1 is spit of dp, everything about them is the same......ds 2 is double of me.
your theory on this occasion is right!

CountessDracula · 25/03/2004 15:43

Posey you aren't Anne Elk are you?

tallulah · 25/03/2004 17:16

I was always told I looked like my dad (I'm eldest), but since my bro reached his 30s he is the image of him. DH is the youngest & the image of his mum, while his eldest brother looks like his dad, so it works for them. My eldest (DD) looks more like me now she's an adult; next one down looks like DH, 3rd one is starting to look like my dad & 4th one resembles both my mum & FIL !!!

Interestingly, DHs brother's youngest looks more like DH than any of our kids! (or his own parents)

Sorry Janh but none of my kids share my initial!! (Ds3 shares DH's but it wasn't deliberate!)
