My dh has just referred to us as 'middle aged' (well in fact I was reading the 'relationships' bit and he said he was amazed at how much a bunch of middle aged women talked about sex!
I say I am 'only' 35 and not middle aged at all. He says having a mortgage, 3 children and a professsional career makes you middle aged, so at 35 and 36 we are a middle aged couple.
Help! Sort this one out! I am not middle aged!

I'd like to know the answer to this too. I suspect I am middle aged: I think policemen all look far too young and I raise my eyebrows at some of things young people wear these days.

Gobbledigook · 01/09/2006 08:51

I'd say used to be about 50 but I don't think I'd even describe my Mum as middle aged (it conjours up a certain image that she doesn't have!) so I'd have to say about 60 now I think. Although, there are people my Mums age who seem 'middle aged' so maybe it's more about the person than the age?

the new middle age is about 60, my dad (76) doesn't even see himself as an oap

pointydog · 01/09/2006 08:53

Have you found a grey pube?
Are you plucking your chin?
Is your waist disappearing?
When you put on eyeliner do you get little white creases where it's skipped over a wrinkle?
Is your hair now dry instead of greasy?
Is your chin drooping?
Do your breasts need a slightly more substantial bra to stay perky?

If you answer yes to any of the above, you are middle-aged. As my 10 year old would say, 'face it'.

Middle-aged is when Zantac becomes your recreational drug of choice.

If 40 is the new 30, then 30 is the new 20 and 20 is the new 10. I quite like this idea. It explains the behaviour of a lot of 20-year-olds.

puddle · 01/09/2006 10:52

lol at pointy dog.

There's nothing more tragic than the term 'middle youth' though.

Maybe instead of fighting against the term 'middle aged' we should be embracing it and redefining it. I certainly don't look (or behave) in the way my mum did when she was my age, nor do any of my friends who are the same age or older.

JessaJam · 01/09/2006 11:06

shit pointydog...i can answer yes to one or two of those...I'm only bloody 28, I am NOT middle-aged...no fair!

moondog · 01/09/2006 11:09

Middle aged is when you'd rather a nice dinner in with friends and aoodles of wine.

Smoky pubs where you can't haer yourself think and have to queue for 20 minutes for a glass of camel piss lose their allure.

CountessDracula · 01/09/2006 11:21

oh arsebags maybe I am creeping towards middle age then

But very disgracefully

moondog · 01/09/2006 11:22

CountessDracula · 01/09/2006 11:24

Are you back in UK?

joelallie · 01/09/2006 11:25

"Middle aged is when you'd rather a nice dinner in with friends and aoodles of wine"

And late middle age is when you have to cut back on the wine 'cos it gives it gives you a bad belly...or aggravates your prostate (if you are male obviously)?

lilibet · 01/09/2006 11:26

I'm 43 and reckon that yes, I am middle aged. Am I likely to live to 86, not really, so i could actually be past middle age!!

What is average life expectancy now?

moondog · 01/09/2006 11:28
