I know its boring, am just getting ideas. Was horrifed when I sent a vague e-mail to a photographer asking for some info and he e-mailed me back saying he was booked up for my propsed wedding date (Oct 2008!) already so I might start seriously looking into some other stuff.

I know big white weddings are a bit cheesy but I really want one and I want it to be lovely and have only been to two weddings in my life and have no close friends who are married so nobody to give me advice. Other than my mum who is stuck in 1981 I think!

What transport did you use to get you from home to church/church to reception etc?
What were your colours

Did you buy your bridesmaid dresses or have them made? They seem v.expensive even from places like Debenhams.
What flowers did you have? How did you chose?
How many bridesmaids did you have?

And finally which place for my reception
Judges or Headlam Hall

hello Smurfgirl.
we got married on a budget in a lovely little country hotel.

parents, one bridesmaid and me all rode to church in a chitty chitty band bang car with crash gears.

I wore an empire line style ivory dress (quite plain) and my bridesmaid wore burnished gold.

Flowers were quite simple in an autumn theme but i ordered a box full of giant artichokes from the market and sprayed them burnished gold colour, then kind of strew them roudn the reception tables amongst ivy. sounds a bit twee now but it was middle october and a beautiful crisp autumnal day.

Headlam hall looks lovely

Smurfgirl · 28/08/2006 20:32

What was the weather like peanut butter? I just can't place late October weather in my head. Was it freezing or sort of autumnal? Your wedding sounds lovely

I got married in Florence .. and everything was fab but not really relevant

I have however been to many weddings and have to say

the kinds of venues I like best have been the country houses with big gardens .. so if any have terraces / gardens (looks like Headlam Hall has) that would be my preference

I had a white stretch limo (provided by arranger, not specifically chosen) but quite like old style cars

flowers .. I like the ones that are flowing and not so constructed and quite like deep luscious colours ... but have to say look at loads of pictures and choose the one that takes your breath away .. I once was at a wedding where she just carried long stemmed blood red roses .. looked fab

I didn't have bridesmaids at all ... but 4 nephews dressed in bright coloured shirts

peanutbutter · 28/08/2006 20:34

do you know, it was perfect weather - sunny, quite warm and crisp with lovely autumn colours everywhere but of course you can't bank on weather like that (it was 16th october). what month are you thinking?

WideWebWitch · 28/08/2006 20:35

OK:
What transport did you use to get you from home to church/church to reception etc? FIRST TIME LONDON BLACK CAB, WHICH WAS A PITA TO BOOK IN ADVANCE BUT MANAGED IT, SECOND TIME A CHEESY LIMO MAINLY BECAUSE I THOUGHT THE 15 CHILDREN WOULD LOVE IT (THEY DID!)
What were your colours (ER, GREEN AND SILVER SARI FOR ME FIRST TIME BUT NO 'COLOURS' AND VARIOUS CONFETTI/FLOWERS SECOND TIME BUT NO COLOURS.
Did you buy your bridesmaid dresses or have them made? They seem v.expensive even from places like Debenhams. SISTERS FIRST TIME, WORE WHAT THEY WANTED, LOADS OF GIRLIES AND DS WEARING WHATEVER THEY WANTED SECOND TIME, THEY PAID FOR IT, WEREN'T OFFICIAL FLOWER GIRLS BUT I GAVE THEM ALL LITTLE BUNCHES OF FLOWERS AND THEY ARE IN THE PICTURES, VERY CUTE
What flowers did you have? How did you chose? SMALL BUNCHES OF WILD FLOWERS FOR GIRLS, 1 LARGE HANDTIED FOR ME, CAN'T EVEN REMEMBER WHAT WAS IN IT. FIRST TIME LARGE TWIGGY BUNCH OF GREEN AND SILVER STUFF
How many bridesmaids did you have? ASSORTED GIRLS ATTENDING FROM 2-9 YO, ABOUT 7/8? SOMETHING LIKE THAT.

Judges looks marginally nicer but I'd go and look and whoever convinces you that they'll look after you and your guests the best I reckon.

2008!!!! Blimey! Both my weddings were planned with between 3 weeks (last yr, second time) amd 3 months (1998, 1st time) notice!

Enjoy planning it though.

Smurfgirl · 28/08/2006 20:37

I got married in our village church and had the reception here
My colours were cream, red and pale gold. I wore ivory & gold, just googled my dress and found it! My DH wore similar colours, the adult bridesmaids wore gold dresses which we had made (all in all, cost £40 a dress, bargain!!). The younger girls had cream dresses from a local shop near us, cost £60
I had cream roses for my flowers, they're one of my favourites. My bridesmaids had red gerbias which I love, they're so cheerful! The younger girls had a small posy like mine. The button holes were red gerbias.
I had 8 bridesmaids! 5 adults - my two sisters, my DH's two sisters and my best friend, and 3 children - my cousin, my goddaughter and my niece.

Hedlam Hall looks beautiful.

Elf1981 · 28/08/2006 20:40

chipkid · 28/08/2006 20:40

had no colours really I wore off white with white flowers thistles and green foliage
no bridesmaids.

peanutbutter · 28/08/2006 20:42

well, all i can say is me and dh are not hot-weather people and both prefer to be cool rather than warm...we'd kind of prepared ourselves for awful weather so that anything better would be a lovely bonus. spring is lovely too of course, with new growth everywhere and the end of short cold days in sight...oh this is making me feel like blowing the dust off my wedding album (and it's only 7 years old!)

harrisey · 28/08/2006 20:43

What transport did you use to get you from home to church/church to reception etc? // my Dad insisted on a Rolls Royce which he paid for!
What were your colours // Bright red! But it was Vhristmas time, real midwinter wedding, so we got away with it. Bridesmaid in red velvet, me with red velvet wrap (whic I actually didnt need) and red flowers
Did you buy your bridesmaid dresses or have them made? They seem v.expensive even from places like Debenhams. //made by friend who made the wedding dress for me
What flowers did you have? How did you chose? //red - carnations for me - had to be flowers that would keep from Christmas eve as wedding was after Christmas. Loads of green foliage - bridesmaid had a foliage boquet. But on the morning of the wedding the florist managed to get some amazing stargazer lilies which went into the church arrangements - they looked fab!
How many bridesmaids did you have? one - my best friend.

What transport did you use to get you from home to church/church to reception etc? we had a vintage open-top car, bridesmaids went in a rolls royce
What were your colours ivory and gold
Did you buy your bridesmaid dresses or have them made? They seem v.expensive even from places like Debenhams. bought, from BHS
What flowers did you have? How did you chose? roses and calla lillies, i didn't have a clue so I just searched websites on the internet and printed pics off, took them to florist and she copied them!
How many bridesmaids did you have? 4, my sis, DH's sis and 2 best friends. My cousin was our ringbearer (too old to be a pageboy!)

Tommy · 28/08/2006 21:19

We had a red London taxi which I spotted around and liked. Just went and booked the driver when I saw him one day. He was very good and his wife decorated the car with ribbons and everything

We didn't have a colour scheme - just lots of different pastel colours.

We bought the bridesmaids dresses in Monsoon. we had 2 bridesmaids - both aged 6 whose primary job was to look pretty (which they did very well I have to say)

I had a mixed pastel colours quite small bouquet of roses, carnations etc - nothing particularly exotic.

The flowers in the church were done by the lady who normally does them - I gave her £100 and she filled the place. I let her choose them.

Headlam Hall would be my preference

poppiesmum · 28/08/2006 21:32

Married in January in stately home used just for weddings, so no car needed as the ceremony, meals, reception and accomodation for us and most guests were all in the same venue - wonderful!

Winter wedding so colours were red and ivory (my dress had red bodice and ivory skirt - bridesmaids (2) wore red dresses. Bought from wedding shop - not too expensive.

Flowers - not in church so only had to supply 3 bouquets, table centres & buttonholes for main men.

Wonderful day - best of my life ( along with dd birth! awwwwww!)

mumfor1standfinaltime · 28/08/2006 21:37

What transport did you use to get you from home to church/church to reception etc? Armstrong sidely (sp)old car that royals used to use.

What were your colours Blue and white (scottish!)

Did you buy your bridesmaid dresses or have them made? They seem v.expensive even from places like Debenhams. Had no bridesmaids, bought my dress second hand.

What flowers did you have? How did you chose?
How many bridesmaids did you have? I had silk flowers, made them myself. I had mix of roses, lillies etc.No bridesmaids.

I like the look of Headlam hall!

Skribble · 28/08/2006 21:46

What transport did you use to get you from home to church/church to reception etc?
DH's uncles burgandy Mercedes and a taxi from a local company for my mum as they had nice cars.

What were your colours

Burgandy and Ivory with gold Celtic knot designs

Did you buy your bridesmaid dresses or have them made?
Flower girl dress in sale at Monsoon, velvet with a velvet shawl I spotted in Debenhams (in the sale too) on a 5m tea break from work.

What flowers did you have? How did you chose?
I had two tone roses, ivy and eciliptus, I looked at a lot of fancy florists with catalogues full of glossy pics, noticed local grocers did flowers and her pictures although grainy and not as professional were at least of her designs and not a mass produced catalogue. Flowers were a bargain, I got 6 pew end sprays that were taken to the reception and used on the tables, later they were handed out along with the favours, display from the back of the car was used on the top table.

How many bridesmaids did you have?
One flower girl.

octavia · 28/08/2006 21:52

How many bridesmaids did you have?=

serenity · 28/08/2006 22:11

What transport did you use to get you from home to church/church to reception etc? I drove myself (registry office) and walked from the car park to the office with my BFs little boy holding the train of my dress the whole way (got a few odd looks!)
What were your colours deep purple (December wedding, I was 7 mths pg and not wearing white!)
Did you buy your bridesmaid dresses or have them made? I had an unofficial page boy who wore his own suit. BF (my witness) bought herself a very nice dark lilac suit, Dhs witness wore own suit.
What flowers did you have? I didn't choose my flowers, BF got them as a wedding present. She took a swatch of the material my dress was made out of and got the florist to match it. So I had a bouquet of cream and dark purple lilies (my favourites) with lots of dark green foliage. Witnesses and parents had 'matching' buttonholes.
How many bridesmaids did you have? One 5 yr old pageboy (BFs son, and only child produced out of of circle of friends or our families at the time)

Both places look nice, but Headlam Hall is pretty swish.

ghosty · 28/08/2006 22:19

What transport did you use to get you from home to church/church to reception etc? - DH's dad knew someone who knew someone who had an old vintage car ... we borrowed it and FIL drove it.
What were your colours Orange .... I had an ivory dress, big bridesmaids in lovely orange dresses (NOT bridesmaidy dresses though - plain summer shift type things) little bridesmaids had cream silk dresses with orange sashes. Best man and ushers had cream waistcoats with orange ties, DH had cream waistcoat embroidered with orange daisies and an orange tie.
Did you buy your bridesmaid dresses or have them made? They seem v.expensive even from places like Debenhams. - Had them made.
What flowers did you have? I had white roses with bear grass, bridesmaids had orange gerberas with bear grass, table flowers were 3 tall orange gerberas in a blue water bottle (like you get in restaurants) with bear grass.
How did you chose? My mother gave me an orange gerbera when I was planning and asked whether I liked the colour - I did ....
How many bridesmaids did you have? 4 ... 2 big ones and 2 little ones ...

Our venue was a church followed by big house/hotel with big garden where every one stayed the night.
