Gosh if that is the reception you get, I am glad I made the decision to stay this side of the Severn!

But that said, I like the Welsh and like the fact I come across so many of them here in England.

I agree with you. The attack on you is irrational.

orangegiraffe · 28/06/2006 22:01

What is there to hate about the english...

moondog · 28/06/2006 22:03

Toothache · 28/06/2006 22:18

Mosschops30 - I'm Scottish... and I could say the same thing, but I won't coz its RIDICULOUS!!!!!!! I hate the English coz they're good at football and we are..... quite spectacularly NOT!

Seriously though thats racism!

yoyo · 28/06/2006 22:19

Don't tar us all with the same brush mosschops! You get ignorant people everywhere. Do you really feel that you are being bullied into leaving or are there other reasons?

nicnack2 · 28/06/2006 22:20

i am scottish and there is alot of anti english feeling here. people are unable to differentiate what is personal and what is media driven. Yes we are especially at the moment bombarded about england and yes i will debate the scot/english topic with great vigour, but if you ask me my nationalitiy i am british.

My mum spent 20 years in Wales and was glad to escape. She finds it very hard still that her children think they are half Welsh! She did have a very hard time though so I suppose I cant blame her.

fattiemumma · 28/06/2006 23:01

I agree...its racism.
if you went in and started spouting that the welsh were all....i dunno soemthing terrible involving sheep (hoping everyone is )

they would be up in arms and you would probably have gotten the sack. Why is it acceptable for others to slag the english off whenever thy like in such a bigoted and ignorant way? if we spoke about other communities like this we could be arrested!

i'd make a complaint about her.

handlemecarefully · 28/06/2006 23:15

I remember as a school kid on a geography field trip to Pembrokeshire getting quite a frosty reception in various places.

When I lived in Scotland the vast majority of people were lovely to me (am English/Irish). Football brought it out a bit more but it wasn't anything I couldn't handle and I worked in a football club at weekends at the time. Take comfort in the fact that no one who is worth getting to know thinks like that and also THE WELSH ARE CRAP AT FOOTBALL!

It IS annoying, but just to balance things out a bit, DH is Welsh and I come across loads of English people who make throw away anti-Welsh comments (often involving sheep). Anyway, I just did some googling, and apparently it was Henry VIII who legally annexed Wales for the English, and he was Welsh himself, so just tell them it wasn't anything to do with you or your relatives.

I am sorry you have been spoken to so rudely Mosschops, but I think people need to be aware of the fact that the word 'racism' should not be used lightly.
How can you compare your treatemnt to that of say an Asian woman who is spat on and called a 'fucking Paki' by feral youths.or an Eastern European who has had his door kicked in by BNP supporters?

Put it in context.
The Welsh have put up with enormous amounts of shit over the years and still do.
On a daily basis I have to fight for my right to live my life through the medium of my mother tongue,be it in doctors' waiting rooms, dental appointments, ensuring the HV fills in the Welsh side of my children's redbooks, returning my MSc application form because it is not in Welsh,as I have specifically asked.

When I walk into a shop in a town where well over 80% of people speak Welsh and my simple Welsh enquiry is met with a slack jawed look and a 'Wot?' or even a snappy 'English' then yes,my blood begins to boil.
(I don't expect everyone to speak Welsh, but I expect those who don't to be courteous enough to acknowledge the fact in a civilised fashion.)

It is all hassle I can do without yet i diligently make (courteous) complaints, write e mails and generally stay on the case.
My latest gripe is with M&S who have signs in their Llandudno store in nonsensical Welsh.I have been complaining about them since January (although to be fair, they are now on the case)and on more than one occasion have been told by some smart arse that they are in 'South Walian Welsh'

Have a look at this link to a pressure group I am a member of which may help put it into context even more.

Cymuned

I am half English by the way and very proud of the fact too.

SoupDragon · 29/06/2006 07:56

but Moondog, to hate someone because of their race is racism.

LeahE · 29/06/2006 08:31

The word 'racism' should be used of anyone who makes negative generalisations about other people based on their race. That's not using it lightly, it's using it correctly. It's not 'not racism' if someone tells you they hate your entire race but then magically 'racism' if they spit on you afterwards.
