Sky & Broadband - BT tell me I can't have both!?!?

GarfieldsGirl · 14/06/2006 20:32

Basically, I've recently had broadband in, but get very regular messages of 'cannot find server'. Its getting really irritating, so I contacted BT about it. They tell me that because I have Sky, the EMI (Electro-Magnetic Iggledypoopledyop) from the boxes interferes with the broadband giving me an unreliable connection.

I think they're talking out of there backsides as I'm sure I'm not the only person in the entire country who has both Sky & broadband!!!!! Would be interested to know if anyone else has similar probs (and those who don't) then I have some ammo next time I speak to BT.

I have Sky and BT broadband. Have you got one of those thingy wotsits on each phone jack?

morningpaper · 14/06/2006 20:33

Hmm well

Your sky box should plug into a splitter on your phone

can't you just unplug your sky box? I've had Sky for 6 years and I've never plugged it in

tortoise · 14/06/2006 20:33

Ive got sky and tiscali broadband and have done for ages.Never had any problems.

NotQuiteCockney · 14/06/2006 20:39

DH says this rubbish. He doesn't think sky produces EMI locally, just from the satellites in the sky. From where they'd interfere with everyone's broadband, not just yours.

MaryBS · 14/06/2006 21:19

I have sky+ and broadband too. I use talktalk for broadband, and have one of those splitter things in the phone sockets.

GarfieldsGirl · 14/06/2006 21:42

I've got those microfilter things in the phone sockets. Sky upstairs isn't in the phoneline, but Sky+ is cos I use a lot of interactive stuff.

I think they're talking blx, thanks NQC (and your DH) for confirming that for me.

Thats bolloxks. We have both with no problems. I expect though that BT have some get out clause so they are not compelled to deal with it somewhere in the small print of your agreement satying they fdo not offer technical support for Sky and Broadband.

I'd try a splinter box if I were you.

mosschops30 · 14/06/2006 22:48

we have sky and bt broadband. sometimes it cocks up but they never blame it on the sky and its always sorted fairly quick

TheLadyVanishes · 15/06/2006 09:27

the exactly same thing is happening to us at the moment!!! the connection keeps going intermittently (hope thats spelt right) I find it very frustrating because trying to get through to report the fault to BT is so long winded, our main socket is in the lounge and we have moved that computer upstairs (the guy we spoke to said it could be something to do with that) what exactly is the splitter is it the microfilter if so we have two of those and tried swapping and it still doesn't work (i will be getting disconnected in oh about 1 min!!!!) good job i copied my message coz i did indeed get disconnected. I HATE BT

Laura032004 · 15/06/2006 10:08

Does your Sky come through your phone line? Could you get a dish instead? We've got a dish, and we're meant to keep the box connected to the phone line at all times, but we haven't plugged it in yet. Apparently we'd only need to do so in order to get a pay for view movie, and then we wouldn't be using the broadband anyway.

JanH · 15/06/2006 10:12

You need to keep Sky plugged in to the phone line to get all the updates, don't you? (Or is that just a ruse on their part so they can keep an eye on what you're watching?)

Our phone line comes into the house upstairs at the back and the broadband is plugged into that socket; our Sky line is plugged into an extension downstairs at the front, and we don't have any probs, if that helps.

JanH · 15/06/2006 10:14

(Our broadband is from AOL btw but that isn't the issue, is it? Just the BT phone line?)

Laura032004 · 15/06/2006 10:15

The bloke that fitted it for us didn't mention anything about that. He just gave us a long piece of phone wire to use as an extension to get from the sky box to the phone point. I suppose it saved him having to tack it round the picture rail, so it's in his interest not to fit it.

We haven't noticed any problems by not having it plugged in - not sure if we've missed any updates though.

GarfieldsGirl · 15/06/2006 17:58

TLV - I've started writing my posts in Word, then copying them too!

Laura/Jan - yes it is a dish, but we have PremPlus and I play lots of games, and lottery etc on Sky so it has to be plugged into phone line.

It actually hasn't happened all day today since I told them they're talking crap, so they've hopefully sorted it [fingers crossed emoticon]. Lets give it 5mins before I can't get server...

We have both but there was a lot of cursing and swearing by the Sky+ installer as we have had to have 2 double connectors and they have to be put together in the correct order! In our case, the first double connector, which plugs into the microfilter, has the first Sky box then the second connector has the second Sky box (am, unfortunately married to a sportoholic) and the 'phone. If the order is incorrect, the phone doesn't work or the Sky isn't plugged into the phone system and so we get charged more. In your case, it sounds as tho' Sky are talking thro' their posteriors.

TheLadyVanishes · 18/06/2006 21:15

WoD why do you get charged more? (sorry to seem dim)

dh seems to think he's solved our problem tho only a temporary measure until we get rid of BT or Sky mmmm probably both Grin he just unplugged the phone from the main socket where the sky is plugged in (he had to unscrew the box because whoever installed sky has made it impossible to unplug from the phone socket and all the wires inside are covered in tape how unsafe is that!) fingers crossed so far no probs

JoolsToo · 18/06/2006 21:18

Our Sky+ was disconnected from the phone line and we didn't know until we got a letter from Sky saying we'd be in trouble if we didn't connect it as it's part of the package - something like that I can't remember properly but I know we had to reconnect sharpish!

blossom2 · 18/06/2006 21:20

we've got BT broadband and Sky+. however our broadband was not working for about 3 weeks and its been a real hassle to get sorted. would definitely not recommend BT broadband...

Mistymoo · 18/06/2006 21:21

Itsn ot really that unsafe
It's not like its mainspower coming in....

There us a much better faceplate that the standardone you get on the master socket. It has a built in microfilter, and ywo outlets - one for analogue line (phone or fax etc( and an RJ45 connection for broadband. You can get MUCH better signal to noise rations which basically can mean your broadband speed could be higher.

EG before switch you might on be able to get 1Mb after you should easily get 2.

TheLadyVanishes · 18/06/2006 21:24

the sky is still plugged into the phone socket we just unplugged the phone which we will do when using the internet and we'll plug back in when not in use. I'm really surprised that sky don't offer broadband

MerlinsBeard · 18/06/2006 21:24

i have sky and aol broadband. when the BB pack cam eit had dsl filters for ALL the phone sockets which have to go in them and anything that would normally go into the socket then gets plugged into the filter (IYSWIM)

My sky box isn't always plugged in, i don't like the idea of it but don't often get the can't find server msg

Mistymoo · 18/06/2006 21:26

Sky do offer broadband.
And there alk of them doing it via the satellite.
Yuk, yuk. That'll be terrible

fattiemumma · 18/06/2006 23:16

i have sky....and broadband.

BT are bs'ing you

lou33 · 19/06/2006 00:11

i have sky and broadband

psychomum5 · 19/06/2006 00:16

Haven't read the other posts, but I used to have sky t.v. got a PC and wanted to be hooke up to the internet, and because of something to to with our phone lines (they spouted something intelectual which went right over my headBlush), we can't have both sky and broadband.

we transfered to NTL, and apart from some minor teething problems we have been with them now for nearly 2yrs and are very happy.

I still don't understand why, but it happened to us.....if it helps at all:)
