TV Watershed - am I alone in thinking that it should be later at weekends ?

This was prompted by watching 'Im a Celebrity...' at 9.30pm on saturday night with 10 & 11 yr old DSs. There were the usually jokes and slight innuendo by Ant & Dec and the other contestants but then they started to show clips of Jordan gyrating and posing suggestively in a ballerina tutu (very tight and revealing). They then showed a short interview with her going on about loving sex etc. Not to mention Lord B 'helping' her into her bikini top and touching her nips !

This was at 9.30pm on a Saturday night. The DSs eyes were on stalks and I was outwardly cringing (DH did turn it over in the end but obv has a higher cringe threshold than I do!). It got me thinking that there should be a later watershed on weekend nights as how many older kids are tucked up in bed by 9pm on a weekend night ?! I don't think of myself as a prude but it really did seem very inappropriate for 9.30pm on ITV.

Did anyone else see it and agree or am I truly a big old parental prude ?!

Erm , i'm not sure about that. I let my kids watch the Osbourns (spelling) and they are only 6 and 3. I know i'm a terrible mother, but they don't hear anything on there that they haven't heard before and they think it's such an hilarious programme (as do i). My dd2 loves ozzy. I only don't let them watch horror really becuse it would scare them half to death.
Perhaps a watershed of 10pm would be more appropriate.

I think it's up to the parents to control small children's viewing at this time. I go to bed before the watershed myself at the moment, so I don't think it should be any later. I am quite happy for my children to look at Jordan boobs, but would stay clear of violence (and that includes the news).

Yeah, I'm not talking about 11pm+ but I think 10pm would be a better option.

Don't think you're a bad mother. The Osbournes is funny but don't agree with my lot watching the unedited version, they show a 'bleeping osbournes' on MTV during the day / early evening. Not sure the 'they don't hear anything on there that they haven't heard before' line is enough for me to justify allowing my kids to watch/listen to someone effing and blinding and then telling them they shouldn't do it. Horses for courses and all that.

Your right wsm but i just think there are worse things they could be watching. Most of the timne it is the bleeped version that they watch but occasionally my brother has the unbleeped version on tape and they watch it. They know my views on swearing, and they don't do it.

I think the problem with the current system is that the transition to more 'adult' programmes is so sudden. At 8.59pm the programmes are fairly harmless. Two minutes later an you have to reach for the OFF button pretty quickly. You don't always notice the time - until you hear the swearing or see gory scenes. I would be in favour of 9pm-10pm being a kind of half-way point between programmes for older children and the start of adult programmes - at least at the weekends.

Well, I don't think Jordan is that harmful really, but I don't let my children watch "I am a celeb" for other reasons. I only let them watch children's telly, so I am a real cow

Watershed at the weekend should be 10pm, my kids 9 & 6 love I'm a celebrity. If I or DH had turned over to something else we'd have had world war 3, was happy to have some peace and quiet for a little while and the kids calmed down before going to bed. I think ITV should not have included the clip of Jordan gyrating, and putting her hand 'down there' suggestively. I think at the very least ITV should have issued a warning before the programme started, surely they're not so naive as to think that young children would all be safely tucked up in bed at that time on a weekend!

I agree with Coppertop - my dd (who is 7) loves Holby City which finishes at 9 pm and sometimes watches other things that finish at 9pm - often she is just pottering to her bed when something like Waking the Dead, Red Cap, Silent Witness or similar is starting - these programmes usually start with a really gruesome murder and are literally seconds after the watershed, especially on BBC when there is no ad break. Maybe there should be a 5 min news update at 9pm. I do agree that a later watershed would be more suitable on a weekend. Anyone else had to explain to a 10 year old what a 32 FF actually means - my ds' comment on her gyrating was - look at her, she is acting like a proper tart isn't she. I think he is growing up!!

I think you are all slighlty mad showing under 8s programmes like this that deal with death or sex.
the whole problem with it is that you are supposed to organise what your kids see so that ther est of us can watchg adult programmes agter 9 when IMO kids should be in bed!

i think there's some shocking stuff on before the watershed, and i'm definitely not a prude Personally I wouldn't have a problem with dd and ds seeing jordan gyrating on celebrity because that is tame compared to the average music video shown on MTV at all times of the day which often verges on soft porn. Sometimes I've felt pretty uncomfortable watching Eastenders as well.

'm woth coddy on this. I think 9pm is late enough and it's up to us to stop our children watching things before or after that if it's unsuitable. I think Eastenders even is too violent and offensive for most younger children.

Personally I agree with the watershed at 9pm.
BUT
I think there is risque stuff on before that ie music videos are prety raunchy

AND
Does anyone else find it annoying when you flick over on the tv after 9pm and find a 12 or 15 film on.

I agree with coddy too - the watershed is at the right time and is just a guide thing anyway, although I don't particularly think kids should be in bed by then - depends on the family routine.

A few months ago I remember there was an enormous hoo-ha about a gay kiss on Casualty because it is pre-watershed. Made me laugh: obviously it's OK for kids to watch gruesome injuries, people dying and screaming at each other etc. but not a gay kiss.
