Why old people are great...

Felt I had to start this thread as a counterbalance to a thread about how annoying they can be. I think old folk are mainly great because

They often have very nice manners
They put up with so much without complaining
They wear hats
They are able to indulge their eccentricities
They have lots of sweets and chocs in their houses
They have a sense of perspective
They love children
Santa is old

I went for shopping and lunch on Sunday with my 75 year old next door neighbour. She told me how lovely it was to have young company because she was 'fed up with old men' (her dh).

She knows more about our village than I ever will, has lived in the house 40-something years. She tells cracking stories about sherry-swilling vicars and naked dancing devil worshippers in the woods. (Our village is a funny place, all innocent old ladies on the surface, but we have 5 nudist colonies in the little lanes).

She was the one who told me the comic phrase 'coffin-dodgers' as used for old people.

Whatever we do they have seen it all before.

Thanks for starting this, Scoobysnax. I think the other thread is rather unpleasant and upsetting.

Older people often have more time for talking.
They are interested in others.
They appreciate your interest.
They can offer good advice and sympathy.
They often look smart and have interesting homes.
They have a different outlook on life.
They went through a World War; some of them, twice.
They alway offer food and drink.
They smell of flowers and face powder (mostly just the ladies)
They have cute wrinkles and white hair.
They are a treasure trove of anecdotes and times past.
They have time for the small gestures which make life nicer.
They brought up the next generation.

They don't drive everywhere at 80mph in stupid, noisy, customised cars.

You can't judge them all as one, any more than you would with ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, etc.

I love OLD people ie 70 plus because they are the really friendly, sweet, always time for DS people.

However, 60 to 70...... (maybe it's the start of the 'moany', driving to slow, tutting phase.)
BTW, this is a rough age guide - I don't ask them their age if they start moaning about how slow the cashier is .
