Yes of course they do! Try different times of day and you will find different clientele. IME gyms are friendly and not as intimidating as you would think :)

brimfull · 06/03/2006 19:07

Yes I do misdee and I need to lose loads.I certainly don't stick out, there's all sorts there from the really young and fit to fat and trying hard and the elderly.

I used to be so intimidated I wouldn't join but I'm really enjoying it now.

Blu · 06/03/2006 19:08

misdee - in the gym I used to go to all the time all sorts of people usd it. And a lot didn't run on the running machines, but did a fast walk. I went to the one in the local recreation centre, not a swish membership one. Lots of fit tomed fit bodies, but lots of 'pre-fit' bodies, much older people etc etc.

spacecadet · 06/03/2006 19:13

well i go to the gym and i have shed loads of weight to lose, i just try and avoid my reflection in the mirror! i just go to a local sports centre and you get all shapes and sizes in tnere.

MrsBigD · 06/03/2006 19:14

misdee... of course they do :)

I used to go to the gym quite a while back. And before Uwila jumps on me again saying that I'm not fat... I know I probably should class myself as podgy however I considered myself big. It's a matter of self-perception :)

what I did though was to make sure I wore proper support and snug leggings and leortard (black of course) with loose t-shirt over so I didn't feel like I was wobbling all over the place Grin

DH used to work out as well and trust me he does qualify as big :)

MrsBigD · 06/03/2006 19:15

ps... after lo no. 2 just don't have the time to work out atm but at some stage I'll be back in there with a vengeance ;)

mousiemousie · 06/03/2006 19:16

yes. what is the point in going if you are already in great shape?

spursmum · 06/03/2006 19:16

Yep the 'largest health and raquet centre in europe' according to them. Looks swanky but the staff are really great and I can't use the excuse that it's too far as its only down the road. Literally!

NotQuiteCockney · 06/03/2006 19:19

A neighbour of mine is quite seriously large, maybe size 24? She goes to the gym loads, at least lately.

And I've always been biggish, never smaller than a 16 I think, and have gone through phases of using the gym.

Go if you want, everyone else is too busy worrying about how stupid they look to peer at you.

brimfull · 06/03/2006 19:22

my friend who persuaded me to join quite rightly said the beautiful thin people are like that because they go to the gym.

spursmum · 06/03/2006 19:25

MrsBigD, Misdee wil probably tell you that I have no need to go to the gym as I am not fat but I also class myself as podgy(6ft and 12 stone).
Plus in my gym, every machine has a tv so you can ignore everyone around you!!

misdee · 06/03/2006 19:31

how much does it cost spursmum?

OP posts:
hermykne · 06/03/2006 19:43

my gym is a women only thing, i didnt particularly pick it for that reason, but it had creche facilites on certain days.
lots of non beautiful shapes on display and u know what everyone is quite nice esp the older ladies maybe in the 50's prob doing it for heart/health reasons more so than vanity. they are great at moral boosting - sure u've a lovely figure - hmmm look at the tummy please Smile

spursmum · 06/03/2006 20:35

Sorry! Im back ds is being a PITA and not staying in bed.
I pay £36 a month for 8am-4pm Monday-Friday adn that gives me use of the pools, saunas, steam rooms etc, gym, and classes.

misdee · 06/03/2006 20:37

is that the one in the old control tower?

OP posts:
Blandmum · 06/03/2006 20:39

I am 5 foot 5 and a size 18 and I go to the gym. There are considerably larger people than me there

spursmum · 06/03/2006 20:39

The tower is the hotel penthouse suites!! It also has conference rooms and a decent restuarant.

paolosgirl · 06/03/2006 20:41

I've just joined a gym, and I can honestly say that there are all different shapes and sizes there, and no-one really notices as they are all to busy huffing and puffing on their own machines.

The toned little gym bunnies in their tiny bits of lycra, fake tans and false nails are a complete hoot! They are a tiny, tiny minority.

misdee · 06/03/2006 20:46

right ok then. i will join the gym when things are more stable. in the meantime will set to work on the diet part Smile

OP posts:
spursmum · 06/03/2006 20:48

I'll see about getting a free guest pass for you at some stage. That way you can try the facilities without getting stuck in a contract.

NannyL · 06/03/2006 21:04

THERE are LOADS of larger (and older) people who regularly use 'my' gym (cannons!

puff · 06/03/2006 21:11

misdee - when I joined my gym last year, I was sooooo relieved there were people of all shapes and sizes working out - the last gym I had attended seemed to have no one over a size 12 - things have changed which is good.
