ta misdee - I've done the GI Diet - there's a few threads on it.

Dottydot · 06/03/2006 21:21

yes, I do! I'm 5'8 and a size 20 and I love the gym!! Not been for a few weeks and I can really feel the difference - I'm even flabbier at the moment... But starting to go again tomorrow - I tend to go twice a week with my Mum (who's much smaller and fitter than me) and it's great. No-one stares - everyone's too busy doing their own thing. I was really really nervous about going but I'm so glad I took the plunge - go for it!

Arabica · 06/03/2006 21:39

Yes, definitely! My gym's full of larger ladies. Most people are too busy worrying about their own reflection to bother looking at anyone else whilst they're working out. Having a trial visit with a friend is a great way to see whether you'll feel comfortable working out there.

Passionflower · 06/03/2006 21:43

Yep loads of larger people at my gym too. Also loads of OAP's doing lifefit and falling off the treadmills.

nannyme · 06/03/2006 23:14

At my cannons in Bromley there sre ALL kinds of gym bods - fit, fat, thin, unfit, cellulite, varicose veins (me!)

swedishmum · 06/03/2006 23:29

Do you have to do an induction where you get weighed and prodded? That's what puts me off - apart from childcare probs.

nannyme · 06/03/2006 23:31

I had an induction. It is recommended not sure if compulsory. Wasn't at all embarrassing - in fact really, really motivating. So much so that I have been back for regular reviews!

brimfull · 06/03/2006 23:32

The induction in my gym was only showing you how the equipment works and sorting out a routine .No weighing ...thank god!

handlemecarefully · 07/03/2006 00:08

At my gym: fat people, thin people, old people, young people - all sorts of folk and nobody bats an eyelid

TearsBeforeBedtime · 07/03/2006 06:47

Yes. I would go to a council gym - they tend to be far more down to earth - baggy t-shirts and tracky bottoms, rather than lycra clad poseurs.

(formerly MTS)

Filyjonk · 07/03/2006 07:02

Try going during the day if you can, you'll get more older people and more SAHM mums, not those lycra people with nothing else to do but go to the gym every evening.

I kind of blank out the thin, toned people when I go (its a membership gym-works for us because it has a pool and kids activities and stuff). I think, I have two lovely children and they probably don't. Or at least I hope not, else I would feel totally inadequate.

Filyjonk · 07/03/2006 07:03

Though I'll warn you now, at my induction I was not weighed, rather the (male 20 year old) instructor estimated my weight Blush!

Dottydot · 07/03/2006 08:49

I had an induction - no weighing!! It was really good - showed me how to use the weights and devised a programme with warm up, weights, treadmill and stretches so I feel like I'm doing it all properly!

It's funny how much time the men spend in front of the mirrors while they're doing their weights - they're much worse than the women..!

ellceeell · 07/03/2006 09:54

I was overweight - I was given "Exercise on Prescription" by my doctor! Hugely reduced fee at a the local authority gym, so long as I went for 20 weeks - there were lots of us there! We had 1:1 with an instructor for part of the time and then were expected to self motivate.

Arabica · 07/03/2006 10:37

Being weighed was optional at my induction. But that may have been because they have complicated scales that calculate your body fat percentage and nobody understands how to work them out!

iota · 07/03/2006 10:42

I belong to the local David Lloyd and there are plenty of overweight people in comfortable T shirts there - as well as the super-fit gym bunnies.

I'm a saggy size 16 ( my ar$e bouncing on the treadmill is not a pretty sight)

NomDePlume · 07/03/2006 10:43

There are a few heavier women at my local gym, I've never noticed anyone staring or making rude comments about them. Go for it Smile

handlemecarefully · 07/03/2006 13:39

Iota - my gym is a David Lloyd too. I feel that we have a lot in common (except for the personalised number plates Wink)

iota · 07/03/2006 13:45

hi HMC - but do you have a saggy size 16 ar$e? Grin

handlemecarefully · 07/03/2006 13:47

It's a slightly more pert size 14 (ha ha! - beat ya!), but it does have a lovely orange peel texture. Enough talk about arses!

iota · 07/03/2006 13:51

I should be in the DL right now doing Pilates, but am stuck at home with a poorly ds2, who is coughing his heart out

handlemecarefully · 07/03/2006 13:52

Aww that's a shame. Is he feeling very rough?

That reminds me - must ring the creche at DL to see if they can take the lo's tomorrow. Haven't done a stroke of exercise since Sunday.

iota · 07/03/2006 13:59

Thanks for asking HMC

He's running a slight temperature, is listless, off his food and has a barking cough. Took him to the Dr this am as he seemed so wretched last night - usual story - it's a virus, give him paracetamol, steam him and rest. He's on the sofa watchng Madagascar

Sorry for the hijack Misdee Smile
