Confused - are 'one' and 'none' meant to be pronounced differently?

Robinw - couldn't your daughter's sentence just mean 'that deal is able to be considered'?

lucy123 · 20/11/2003 13:36

SueW - I think you have a budding writer there! V imaginitive anyway.

Tinker, we Southerners pronounce "one" and "none" to rhyme with "done" and "fun". Northerners don't. Even though they pronounce "fun" and "done" differently. [I think I'll stop there before I confuse things further]

Tinker · 20/11/2003 13:41

lucy123 - hmm, talking to myself now but 'one' and 'none' rhyme with 'don' and 'won' rhymes with 'fun' and 'done'. Southerners, aren't they weird?

nerdgirl · 20/11/2003 13:43

So does that mean that you pronounce non and none the same way Tinker?

janh · 20/11/2003 13:47

DH is from Accrington (somebody has to be) and his weird pronunciation means that Patrick Moore and Patrick Mower sound like the same bloke.

"The Sky at Night" presented by Patrick Mower?

"Callan" featuring Patrick Moore?

janh · 20/11/2003 13:50

no, no, no, Tinker, one, none and won all rhyme with nun and done and fun!

(Northerners...tsk tsk)

Tricky buggers, vowels.

Tinker · 20/11/2003 13:50

nerdgirl - yes.

nerdgirl · 20/11/2003 13:54

Not picking on you Tinker, no need to be defensive. I'm Irish so I'm just displaying my own ignorance of British regional accents.

Tinker · 20/11/2003 13:58

No, I know you're not nerdgirl Which part of Ireland are you from? I'm from Liverpool but, honetsly, do not have strong accent, just have the inflections. But have been asked often enough which part of Ireland I'm from to confirm that the Liverpool and Dublin accent can sound similar.

nerdgirl · 20/11/2003 14:01

I'm from Dublin but my accent is more American than anything else. I blame my upbringing - Ernie and Bert have a lot to answer for!!

katierocket · 20/11/2003 14:02

robinw

"I am having considerable difficulty writing a sentence with 'considerable' in it"

Two for the price of one!

Help - is it 'nine medical personnel ARE clustered around me'? It is, isn't it? Am writing article about childbirth, in case you were wondering.

motherinferior · 21/11/2003 10:15

including ventouse incident BTW

janh · 21/11/2003 10:21

Definitely isn't "is"!

WideWebWitch · 21/11/2003 10:22

MI, yes, I'd have thought so, nine and personnel are both plural.

motherinferior · 21/11/2003 10:32

incidentally www email appears to have gone awol on me...

...oddly enough am producing words at amazing rate when writing about childbirth

motherinferior · 21/11/2003 11:04

Is it 'panicking' or 'panicing'? Think former. But looks weird.

janh · 21/11/2003 11:12

K, deffo (it's how I spell it so it must be right!)

motherinferior · 21/11/2003 11:29

shall stop panicking, thanks

scampadoodle · 21/11/2003 12:41

On Newsnight the other night they had a quote written on the screen & they'd used 'it's' where it should have been 'its' - this is the BBC for god's sake! Also I heard a Liberal MP say 'less' instead of 'fewer' no fewer than twice (so obviously not just a slip of the tongue).

& a very old friend of mine - a primary school teacher - once confessed she didn't know the difference between 'it's' & 'its'. She maintained it didn't matter as she didn't teach at that level. I was appalled though; how can you get through a degree & a teaching qualification & not know that?
