ks, that ban/banes thing seems to fit in with what I loosely observed in the Swedish newspaper - that a possessive (?) was formed by sticking an s on the end of a name - Old English is related to Norse, isn't it? (?????).

janh · 02/12/2003 12:55

Am beginning to feel like D Rumsfeld - "there are known unknowns - things we know we don't know - and then there are unknown unknowns" etc!

popsycal · 02/12/2003 13:18

i finished reading it - buy it

She's on Jeremy Vine now - started with the DR quote!

kayleigh · 02/12/2003 13:42

Going back to the original posting on this thread. If anyone is interested, I have just seen the "Eats, Shoots & Leaves" book in a city branch of Waterstones signed by the author.
Sorry for interrupting.

SenoraPostrophe · 02/12/2003 13:47

Old English isn't related to Norse very directly, but we did pinch thousands of words from the Vikings.

The woman was also on breakfast the other day. Wish I'd thought of writing that book!

suedonim · 02/12/2003 14:15

Here's a wee punctuation quiz for you. BBC quiz and an item about Rumsfeldisms

Did anyone hear DR at a news conference on the news yesterday, being asked a leading Q by a woman from the FT after he'd said he wasn't answering any more Qs? He was actually very charming and funny - and his isms do make sense in a mad sort of way (like the one about not knowing what he said yesterday, but he knows what he thinks, so assumes that's what he said - I know just what he means!!!)

Thank's popsycal. I think may be ill read the hole thread tomorow when im not feeling so tyred.
(SPOT THE DELIBERATE MISTAKES!!) Merry Christmas all.

boozysoozywong · 24/12/2003 23:01

it sounds like you don't get overcome by the festive spirit, nor do I. I enjoy giving DS1 gifts all through the year and feel inclined to resist the pressure from the great engine of commerce to go mad at this time of year. Also am SAHM and dh workd from home so and DS1 isn't at nursery so we are able to hide from it and the outside worldto some extent (don't weave our own clothes or form own religion or anything like that!)

However did ice own xmas cake this evening though.

Sorry, was that a rant?

JanH · 24/12/2003 23:29

dd1 had a new mobile phone delivered today. The sticker on the flap of the envelope included the phrase "by opening this envelope your excepting this contract".

Aaaaaagh!

Tinker · 26/12/2003 17:22

Got 'Eats, shoots and leaves' for Christmas. Can't relax reading it, making me edgy about all the things I did that I thought were ok. And I'm conscious of her grammar all the time.

popsycal · 26/12/2003 17:24

i got my knickers in a twist about that woman's grammar too!!!

OP posts:
Tinker · 26/12/2003 17:28

But, because she's writing it, I'm assuming she's correct.

I want to invent some new punctuation for the much lambasted exclamation mark. How do you express 'Oh my God' ness without doing '!!!!!!!!!' ?

festivisil · 26/12/2003 18:05

Tinker, I got it for Christmas too, and I agree; I feel a little like I'm going to be told off! But then, if I read it while it is propped up on my new deluxe bath rack with candlestick, drinks holder and book rack I'm in a kind of heaven and who cares ...
