MIL just phoned to confirm she can feed cats whilst we are away over xmas (which is great and I am really thankful) however she also said that it would be good as she will then be able to get our dinner service and wine galsses etc to use for her guests on xmas day as she doesn't have enough) "oh" i say (as this is news to me). "is that a problem" she replies. "no" i respond "it's just that I would have liked to have been asked". To which she replie "well I didn't think I needed to as it is my son's house and as he's family what is his is effectively mine!" . TBH I am not fuming with her just gobsmacked at such a bizzare attitude.

Oh, she's a corker, isn't she !!!!!!

Kaysleighbells · 21/12/2005 14:03

What !!!! . I know I shouldn't but LOL at the cheek of the woman.

NotQuiteCockney · 21/12/2005 14:06

Does this mean you can go borrow her stuff whenever you like?

QueensSpeechEagle · 21/12/2005 14:08

priceless!!!

Mincepiedermama · 21/12/2005 14:09

You just trot along now like a good Daughter-in- law and make sure the stuff is all clean and shiny for her. Also, as a gesture of festive good will, make sure she knows all your clothes and jewellery are available for her and her guests to borrow, there's a good girl.

IOTAnnenbaum · 21/12/2005 14:09

i guess that she's not hear of courtesy then?

NotHavingXmasInChicagomum · 21/12/2005 14:10

We recently had a new front door put in and she keeps saying we must get her a set of keys cut for when she has to come over and feed the cats etc (you can imagine how reluctant I am to do that can't you) but i wouldn't be surpised if she does that herself whilt we are away.

I think the bit that got me the most was not that she just assumes she can help herself to the stuff but she see's this as her son's house (I actually supported dh through law school and payed the deposit for the house from an inheritance)

she's a loon
a rude ill-mannered loon too

fruitful · 21/12/2005 14:13

So have you got keys for her house? And what would you like to borrow?

hornbag · 21/12/2005 14:13

The night before you go away have a really big dinner party and make sure you dirty every plate, bowl, glass, utensil in the kitchen and then just leave it for her to find with a note saying "Help Yourself p.s. marigolds under the sink"

IOTAnnenbaum · 21/12/2005 14:14

oooh hornbag - i like that idea

take it with you! and yes... are you allowed the same perks from her house? letting yourself in, taking what you want?

hornbag · 21/12/2005 14:17

I'm not usually such an evil cow -it just seemed the obvious thing to do!

WigWamBam · 21/12/2005 14:18

I think I'd just hide the dinner service and wine glasses under the bed or something. Cheeky cow ... is there anyone else who can feed the cats for you so that you don't have to give her the keys at all?

gggimmesnowsnow · 21/12/2005 14:22

What does your dh think about what she said?

NaomifromMilkshake · 21/12/2005 14:24

That is not on, you need to talk to DH about that attitude.

saltire · 21/12/2005 14:25

Hide it all.
Go on I would

followthestarlover · 21/12/2005 14:28

also, if what's his is effectively hers... then give her all his dirty laundry to do as well

TheVillageIdiot · 21/12/2005 14:29

Hornbag - I was about to suggest using it and not washing it up.. glad I read the thread before I did. Good idea! Although I would just use maybe a bit of everything

LoveMyGirls · 21/12/2005 14:29

definatly would not be giving my house keys to this freak of a woman i would trust the next door neighbour more than her. my MIL has keys to our house but i know damn well she would not let herself in she only has keys incase we're stupid enough to lock ourselves out

Pinotmum · 21/12/2005 14:29

Yes, I'd be tempted to pack it all away but then I'm evil.
