I watched it in horror.... then realised ds was watching it too! We explained much the same way as GR explained to his kids, that they were fed lots of good food to make them fat so we could eat them for Christmas dinner.

But then he asked if it was sore. DH and I both said NO, they just get zapped and thats it. Then he asked "But if it isn't sore why did they scream when they were zapped". We just said that was the Zapper that made the noise not the Turkeys.

I am a meat eater... and I'm not normally squeamish.... BUT MY GOD!!!

which one went?
whadid his kids htink

SackAche · 16/12/2005 12:01

Fish - They showed ALL of them being hung up by their feet and an electrode put in their mouth... and zapped!

The kids wanted to watch.... but thankfully GR said NO WAY!

I had to go in to the kitchen when they did it!! Wasn't sure if it was a turkey I heard screaming or not!

LucycatsGotTheTurkey · 16/12/2005 12:03

At least the butcher was clearly very experienced and seemd to genuinely care for the birds.....I'm sure there are a hell of a lot of turkeys this year who aren't killed so professionally.

SackAche · 16/12/2005 12:03

Zeph - It was the Turkeys screaming.... believe me.

LucycatsGotTheTurkey · 16/12/2005 12:04

and it wasn't nearly as bad as Jamie killing that sheep in Italy!

SackAche · 16/12/2005 12:04

Lucy - Yeah it must have been pretty awful for your turkey to be mauled by your cat!

  • just remembered my Christmas name!!

We don't actually let Lucycat get the turkeys while they are still alive - scary things they are!!

SackAche · 16/12/2005 12:07

Oh I didn't see Jamie killing a sheep! OMG!

OnZephyrstDayofXmas · 16/12/2005 12:08

I shut my eyes and put my fingers in my ears when Jamie did the sheep!!!!!

LucycatsGotTheTurkey · 16/12/2005 12:09

Now that was gruesome - I thought Jamie was going to throw up! he stuck a knife in this poor animals neck and held it there until it was dead, then they hung it up to clean out and all the innards went into this little girls paddling pool - empty of water - but even so, stuff of nightmares!

Epiffany · 16/12/2005 12:29

that was a really nice way to slaughter them, people should know where the food comes from and how it gets to the table kids included

SackAche · 16/12/2005 12:33

Epiffany - Absolutely agree! Doesn't make it any less horrifying for my 4.5yr old!

OP posts:
Epiffany · 16/12/2005 12:35

less horrifying than watching turkey twizzlers being made
I had to close my eyes at the actual zap bit.
I used to work on a farm where we slaughtered 4 lambs, two mutton ewes and 4 aberdeen angus weaners every year.

SackAche · 16/12/2005 12:43

Epiffany - I worked on a farm where I bottlefed orphaned lambs!

I don't get squeamish... so watching turkey twizzlers being made wouldn't probably disgust me with what they put in them.... but watching an animal being electrocuted whilst hung upside-down by its feet.... oh and it squealing as the current was sent through its jolting body really shocked me!

....still watched all 8 get zapped though.... I think I have masochistic tendencies.

It didn't put me off Christmas dinner!

Epiffany · 16/12/2005 12:55

you only just worked out you have masochistic tendencies Sackache?
get with the programme already

SackAche · 16/12/2005 13:57

Haha.... well I keep posting my opinions on MN!!!

NomDePlumPudding · 16/12/2005 14:00

I watched and thought it was pretty good actually. TBH, I think that if that upset you, then maybe you should be rethinking your carnivorous diet, as the turkeys were slaughtered in the quickest and most humane way available. Harsh but true.

Enideepmidwinter · 16/12/2005 14:00

the bit when their eyeballs boiled white was pretty nasty

SackAche · 16/12/2005 14:05

Must be a misunderstanding here!! I know it was quick and humane..... BUT it was still pretty gruesome to watch!!!!!

AND I worked on farms lots.... and I eat animals.... and I'm not squeamish about it..... I've had to skin dead lambs before.

Doesn't change the fact that it was something I'd never seen before and I found it gruesome!

Obviously if it had really upset me I wouldn't have watched all 8 of them being fried.

It was ds's questions that kind of through me, he looked really worried!

SackAche · 16/12/2005 14:07

Yeah Enid, was the facial close-up at point of death really necessary?

OP posts:
Enideepmidwinter · 16/12/2005 14:07

I thought it was horrible to watch - the shriek!

thought the lamb was better

SackAche · 16/12/2005 14:09

Enid - Better???? Are you normal?

OP posts:
ThePrisoner · 16/12/2005 23:29

I'm a veggie, and it just reinforced all my ideas on why it is that I don't want to eat something that was alive! I did watch most it, albeit through squinty eyes, and I think I will stick with my diet of lentils and carrots (which don't squeal quite so much when they are slaughtered).

christmasdinnyer · 16/12/2005 23:35

it's true, meat is murder. awful.
