I watched it in horror.... then realised ds was watching it too! We explained much the same way as GR explained to his kids, that they were fed lots of good food to make them fat so we could eat them for Christmas dinner.

But then he asked if it was sore. DH and I both said NO, they just get zapped and thats it. Then he asked "But if it isn't sore why did they scream when they were zapped". We just said that was the Zapper that made the noise not the Turkeys.

I am a meat eater... and I'm not normally squeamish.... BUT MY GOD!!!

I thought it was important for me as a meat-eater to be able to see the animal die, but didn't really see why we had to watch all of them. I think the director/producer must be vegetarian!

RachD · 16/12/2005 23:45

O.k I didn't watch it, but veryone was talking about it in the office today.
They said that there was a warning. ( prior to the advert break - I'm not sure on this point )
Are you saying that the warning was not strong enough ?

lanismum · 16/12/2005 23:56

i saw it, horrible dunno why i carried on watching it, think i was just too lazy to get up and find the remote, i know it was supposedly humane, but it looked awful, especially the eyes, glad im veggie.

christmasdinnyer · 16/12/2005 23:56

I think if you eat meat you should see the full story.

there would have been a warning on the programme, yes.

SackAche · 17/12/2005 22:02

lol I never saw any warning and I watched the whole thing!!

I have a very basic opinion about eating meat.... and that is that humans are meant to! I used to have the theory that you shouldn't eat an animal if you couldn't kill it yourself..... but then I thought "I'm a woman though, it was the men that killed!"

So I now only eat animals I know DH could kill to provide for the family.... which is just about anything.

I wasn't complaining about them showing it. I did have a morbid fascination about it and knew it was happening this week so tuned in. But it was still quite shocking none-the-less.

The warning was voiced at least twice as the program restarted after the ad breaks (we only saw from 8.30 onwards). Saw the first one being stunned and couldn't watch the rest.

SackAche · 17/12/2005 22:08

LIZS - Yeah when they said they were stunning them I thought they knocked them out then cut their throats..... but the 'stunning' was the 'slaughter'. Brutal..... but strangely fascinating. Wish I had prepared ds for it a bit better though!

investigation here

Mistletoo · 18/12/2005 11:57

all in the name of entertainment - lovely

zippimistletoes · 18/12/2005 12:08

I think it was intended as education rather than entertainment as such

I did find the lamb being killed by Jamie more distressing as he clearly did too

I think there is an argument for knowing where food comes from and tbh this was mild compared with where most meat is raised and slaughtered

MaryP0p1 · 18/12/2005 12:22

Our turkeys came from the farm next door to us and were killed especially for us. Hmmmm.

I didn't see the programme, don't live in the UK, but have to say I think alot of people disassociate themselves with the food that they eat. I think that if we were all more aware of how our food (meat and veg) got to our tables and the effects on our environment and ourselves we would be far more fussy about what we ate and how it got there.

Enideepmidwinter · 18/12/2005 17:04

marypop I have MET the turkey we will be having for christmas dinner

I am fully aware of how meat is produced which is why I bang on about buying locally and organically.

Still thought it was unnecessary to show all 8 turkeys getting it. I don't intend to be there when MY turkey 'gets dead' (dd2)
