How to wear wedding/engagement rings

When married for first time I wore engagement ring on top of wedding ring. Assumed it was the norm. Recently tried on wedding ring for 2nd marriage and both sales assistant and DP told me one should wear wedding ring on top of engaement ring. Was I wrong for entire duration of 1st marrigae (7 years)?

I wear wedding ring nearest hand, then engagement ring. Do not have eternity ring.

marthamoo · 16/11/2005 15:44

No, it's wedding ring, and engagament ring on top (above). I always assumed it's because you don't wear your engagement ring on your wedding day - you put the ring on your 'naked' finger. Not that I have an engagament ring, mind you.

marthamoo · 16/11/2005 15:45

Engagament? Where did that come from?

Marina · 16/11/2005 15:45

Apparently you wear your wedding ring closest to your knuckle and your engagement ring further.
I was told that way the symbol of your marriage is closest to your heart...

fireflyfairy2 · 16/11/2005 15:47

As I put them on I put, Wedding, engagement (as the wedding ring is shaped to fit the engagement ring, then eternity ring.... thats the way I've always seen it done...

I agree with Martha moo - all the etiquette things I've read when I was arranging my wedding said the saem - as did the vicar. I've never taken my wedding ring off since we got married - DH thinks I'm wierd.

marthamoo · 16/11/2005 15:48

sales assistant and DP are wrong!

Marina · 16/11/2005 15:50

Mine only came off at the height of my pregnancy pudginess when it threatened to sever my finger sharklet - I immediately had it on a ribbon round my neck and couldn't wait to get it back on again.

marthamoo · 16/11/2005 15:50

Ring rules! Some are quite funny - like don't give a diamond ring as a gift unless you are proposing marriage!

Shop assistant said Catholics wear rings in order they are received ie engagement ring nearest to knuckle and wedding band on top. Both my first and 2nd wedding bands are wishbone like ie engagement ring fits into dip in wedding band like a puzzle. So glad to hear I can wear wedding follwed by engagement.

Out of interest where does one wear eternity ring?

My mother says that once you get your wedding band you only wear engagement for special occassions. Anyone else heard this? During first marriage wore both my rings every day (except when swollen fingers when pg)

Do I have to get a divorce or become catholic then as i am wearing mine the wrong way, they are slightly different sizes and I find it more comfortable to put engagment on first. I,m sure as long as you love your DH it doesn't really matter FGS .

Hulababy · 16/11/2005 17:26

I wear my wedding ring, then my engagement ring. And I had a big church blessing in a catholic church (DH catholic, not me) and they still said to out my wedding ring on closest to the knuckle.

Engagement ring worn next to knuckle, but only because it would fall off otherwise (never used to be loose, what a pig to lose weight in my fingers and not my thighs!)

Pinotmum · 16/11/2005 18:07

I have just got my engagement ring after being married 5 yrs and I wear it on top of my wedding ring.

JessicaandRebeccasmummy · 16/11/2005 18:10

i wear wedding ring, then engagement ring.... speaking of which, this thread has reminded me to go and put them back on after taking them off at 20 weeks pg due to heat and fat fingers - Becky is 3 weeks old and i still havent put them back on - oops

Hazellnut · 16/11/2005 18:15

wedding ring then engagement ring here - eternity ring on other hand as my fingers are too short and stubby to look right with 3 rings on one finger

alittlebitshy · 16/11/2005 18:39

I want an eternity ring....

when is traditional (or is it when the dh gives in to dw nagging ?)

Passionflowerinapeartree · 16/11/2005 18:40

Wwedding ring nearest hand then engagement ring on top. Sparkly ring is more prominent that way .

My engagement ring is like an eternity band though, when DH gets round to buying me a big solitaire I'll probably swap them over so that the engagement is nearest the hand wedding band in the middle and solitaire on top.

Lonelymum · 16/11/2005 18:45

LasVegas, I am a Catholic, married in a RC church and I can assure you that it is as Marthamoo's link describes: wedding ring on first, followed by engagement ring.

LadySherlockofLGJ · 16/11/2005 18:46

Beat me to it Lonely Mum

Lonelymum · 16/11/2005 18:48

I never take my rings off, except for when I am baking and have to put my hands into the dough - just to stop the rings getting covered in mixture. What is this stuff about taking off your engagement ring at night?
