When married for first time I wore engagement ring on top of wedding ring. Assumed it was the norm. Recently tried on wedding ring for 2nd marriage and both sales assistant and DP told me one should wear wedding ring on top of engaement ring. Was I wrong for entire duration of 1st marrigae (7 years)?

but... should i wear my engagement ring (not married yet) on my left or right hand?

LadySherlockofLGJ · 16/11/2005 18:51

All my rings come off at night, I have poor circulation and add the heart condition in there and my fingers do seem to swell in the night. I find it easier to take them off and put them in the same place, than to yank them off in the night and then scrabble about on the floor in the morning looking for them.

LadySherlockofLGJ · 16/11/2005 18:52

I should add all is three, wedding, engagement, and eternity.

Lonelymum · 16/11/2005 18:53

Gosh LGJ, if I were you, I would have lost my rings 20 times over by now (I am always losing things and I do feel the only reason I still have my rings is because I never take them off).

Lonely mum I don't remove my engagement ring either. I checked with Jeweller where I bought ring (Hatton Garden)if ok to sleep in it/ shower etc. He said yes (I have diamonds). This is just aswell as our contents insurance only covers my ring if I a) wear it or b)it is in a safe. Who has time to faff around with a safe twice a day!

My engagement ring was made specially for me and the jeweller laughed when we went in to buy our wedding rings from him a few months later and I told him I was worried about damaging the engagement ring by wearing it all the time. It has 2 diamonds in itand he said as diamonds are so tough, I was far more likely to damage other things with the ring rather than the other way round.

Also, we were burgled when I was a child and my mother (who did not usually wear her engagement ring but kept it in a safe) happened to have left her ring out on the dressing table as she had worn it and my father had not got round to putting it back in the safe. Needless to say, the burglars stole the ring and so now my mother has no engagement ring (although my dad bought her another ring, it is not the same, is it?) Anyway, I grew up with that, so now I will not take my ring off in case something similar happens to me.

I have my engagement ring first and then wedding ring - because it is more comfortable that way round - but I always thought it is supposed to be the other way round - which is what most people here are saying.

acnebride · 17/11/2005 12:32

knuckle, wedding, engagement imo

eternity rings; when we got together my dh was insistent it was first anniversary, but i said ten and beat him down. purely mercenary - on the first anniversary he wasn't going to be able to afford anything great

NomDePlume · 17/11/2005 12:35

I wear my wedding ring first and my engagement ring sits on the top. Mainly because my wedding ring has a nick cut out of it to fit the stone in my engagement ring. They look weird the other way around.

I wore my engagement ring on my wedding day, was that wrong then ?!

highlander · 17/11/2005 12:40

crikey, I don't wear either ring; it irritates the hell out of me. MIL gets most narked, she always asks how will other people know I'm married and am I not worried that people will think I'm an single mother......

Wedding ring nearest hand, engagement ring on top. Waiting till hands are less preggy swollen to get eternity ring

Wore my engagement ring on my right hand whilst actually getting married, then swapped it over onto my left hand while signing the register

Passionflowerinapeartree · 17/11/2005 13:32

acnebride ! That's why I had an eternity style engagement ring. Could afford reasonable row of little ones. I want the solitaire to be BIG.
