The last (almost) three years has been a nightmare, which isn't over but things are better.

I have just started posting after being awol from mumsnet + also moving to another Country.

In the past, many of you have given me some nice compliments + words of support and I want to say thank you.

wow you are back, what country are u in? how are the kids?

jmg1 · 22/10/2005 21:32

We are in the algarve, Portugal.

The kids are fine and settled in well.
I am adapting to new Country but glad to have given it a go and made the move. Met some nice people. Had a brief liason with a gorgeous german woman but it went down hill after she kept saying that my ds is evil
Anyway his new teacher thinks he is a lovely lad and a star(as did his teacher in the uk)

my parents are in portugal next month, lol. whatmad you move there?

i bet your ds is an angel not evil at all.

bsg · 22/10/2005 21:38

I live in Portugal too but in Cascais if you aRE NEW TO pORTUGAL AND NEED ANY HELP please say so.

jmg1 · 22/10/2005 21:40

Are you coming with your parents?

I spent two years (and many threads) thinking of where to go, including New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Glasgow, Manchester, France, Italy, Spain then decided on Portugal before even visiting. reasons include climate, beaches, some good international schools, plenty of varied and decent restaurants, more relaxed lifestyle. The cost of living is not cheap though. You get more house for your money + alcohol normally cheaper but just about everything else is more expensive in this area mainly due to large number of expats. i think the other areas of Portugal are cheaper.

JMG, I was in Lagos about 3-4 weeks ago and was astonished at how the prices had risen. I have been going to The Algarve since i was 2 virtually every single year and this year was a hell of a lot more expensive. the price of living over there pretty much matchede that of the UK if not worse.

jmg1 · 22/10/2005 21:42

thanks bsg,
are there other mumsnetter's here?
where about is Cascais?

OP posts:
misdee · 22/10/2005 21:44

bsg · 22/10/2005 21:44

jmg1 · 22/10/2005 21:51

ladys, I think you are right
thanks aimsmum, how are you doing?
spring chick, just had electric bill for one month 175euros

OP posts:
Springchicken · 22/10/2005 21:52

indeed, bloody hell! Its meant to be hot, how can you be using that much electricity ?

jmg1 · 22/10/2005 21:55

I don't know, but thats almost triple my average bill in uk + anyway the heating is gas and I have not even turned it on yet!
metered water is costing about double our uk bills!

we are near Almancil

OP posts:
bsg · 22/10/2005 21:56

its rained all day in cascais, I dont know about the algarve. We havent put the central heating on yet but it wont be long. It is expensive here.175 for 1 month sounds a bit steep though

Springchicken · 22/10/2005 21:57

Well if the electric is anything to go by I wouldn't bother switching it on either. Invest in some nice warm blankets for when the chilly nights set in!

What are you doing with yourself them jmg?

jmg1 · 22/10/2005 22:00

we had some rain this morning, then clear sky later, but as you probaly know rain was desperately needed, apparently it had not rained heavily since last November here.

OP posts:
Springchicken · 22/10/2005 22:01

No it's been terrible. We went up into the national parks whilst we were over and I have never seen it so dry.

jmg1 · 22/10/2005 22:01

well my three kids keep me busy + still running business in the uk + probably going to start a little business here and another in the uk!

OP posts:
Springchicken · 22/10/2005 22:02

Blimey you are being a busy bee. Didn;t know if you might have decided to take a break from things for a while and have a rest!
Sounds like you keeping nice and busy though.

part of the reason for moving was to take it easy!!!! but i have met two people here who have a business with a fitness system which is taking off around the world and they need a cash backer to kick it off down here.
Plus as I can't do the maintenance on my uk properties anymore and it is so hard to find good plumbersand electricians in London I am thinking of starting a property maintenace company and employing a very good friend (t manage it) whose own business is not working out

MassacreOHara · 22/10/2005 22:06
