Christmas Presents - what are the 'hits' and 'misses' for your dc?

Curious to know what gifts have lived up to their billing (or exceeded expectations), and which are/were disappointments? Any surprises - good or bad?

Our only dud so far - a remote control helicopter that no longer functions after bumping (gently) into the wall.

Most popular so far? Walkie talkies - dd has been in the garden in the bitter cold, and is taking great delight in sending me radio greetings and 'important' messages.

sonic screwdriver and bow tie were massive hits. Miss would be the doll my mum got Strawberry which she punched in the face then fired across the room!

JiminyCricket · 26/12/2010 16:36

Got dd 7 some crystals and a box to keep them in (wooden one) - while i was buying the crystals on ebay I saw a 'display' stand - it basically a small mirrored square with an led light in the middle that changes colours and lights up any crystal you stand on it - it was only 1.99 and v cool effect. She loves it. Also a very pretty jewellry tree for dd2 (metal cut out tree and birds style).

arentfanny · 26/12/2010 16:38

Where did you get the sonic screwdirver Flame, DD's birthday is coming up and she is Dr Who mad (it's Five by the way).

This year for the first time we have no dud's.

Flame · 26/12/2010 16:44

Got it from boots on three for two. They had them in toys r us too. Tis very realistic

Francagoestohollywood · 26/12/2010 16:51

Dd, especially loved the Playmobil swimming pool, and a bunk bed for her dolls.

Ds epsecially loved a book with pictures of the Alps and a small pinball.

They love their new bikes :)

SproutsMakeTortoiseFart · 26/12/2010 16:58

Ds2 loves his Cuponk, i didn't expect him to play with it even though he had asked for it.

No misses so far i don't think. Although playmobil hasn't been played with since being built but the toy box with all their other playmobil is impossible to get out at the moment so may get played with more once they have other bits out.

Jdore · 26/12/2010 17:15

Ds1 is still in his shed and wants to move in permently!
Ds3 loves his tent
Dd1 unfortunatly is very difficult to please

Earlybird · 26/12/2010 17:23

verity - sounds as if your 'flying insect' is similar to our helicopter. Great in theory, poor in reality.

A few years ago, I was sure the fairly elaborate (and quite expensive) wooden marble run would bring hours of pleasure. I was wrong. I can count on two hands the number of times it has been out of the box.......and of course, the fact the construction instructions have gone missing doesn't help (and a few hours of searching online for duplicate/replacement instructions has proved fruitless).

You just never know........

My ds loves his Duplo sets and has not stopped playing with them. The wooden ikea ktchen is great ds loves it :)

At the minute ds is playing with the toy story rc which is fab, tbh hes loved all his presents.
The cd player from my mum is great he listened to storys going asleep last night and woke us up singing the thomas theme tune :)

Its been a great Christmas and im really suprised he loved his kung zhus as I got these as he wanted some like his older cousin but hes really enjoyed them and so does the cat :)

Normasnorks · 26/12/2010 17:49

Nerf guns - being used for target practice with plastic cups rather than warfare though

And 'sound machines'

Both cheap & cheerful mega 'hits' with the DSs...

And the 'misses'?

er... everything DH bought, basically Angry (I told him not to buy half of it, and he ignored me...)

nannynobblystockingnobs · 26/12/2010 17:54

Hit with DD2 was the little furry Frenzies dalmatian which whizzes around the floor yapping. When she unwrapped it that was it, she didn't want to open any more presents! DD1 loves the red Magic 8 Ball which I grabbed as a last minute thing from Boyes. And the LalaLoopsy doll which came from Santa!

glitterkitty · 26/12/2010 18:00

DS (3) has been playing ghost pirates since 7am xmas morning- playmobil definatly this years big hit.

Miss- nerf guns. his hands are too small to shoot them Sad

Ds loves his imaginext stuff.

He hasnt really looked at hsi camera but he has been ill and it was his birthday 3 days ago so think a bit overwhelmed.

Cies · 26/12/2010 19:06

Ds (13mo) has not stopped "mopping" and "sweeping" the house since he was given his toy mop, bucket, broom and dustpan set. DH has had to concede that I must do some cleaning while he's out of the house, for ds to copy meGrin.

Jojay · 26/12/2010 19:09

The hits have been a Buzz Lightyear figure and a Kiddizoom camera - DS1 has been glued to the games.

The dud so far, is a microscooter. I know they're great but it's too snowy to try out! Ds2 has been scooting up and down the hall but it's not quite the same!

IlanaK · 26/12/2010 19:12

Ds2 is over the moon with his vetch video camera. Thanks to the person on mumsnet who pointed it out as being half price on amazon!

Hogwarts cluedo has been a huge hut with ds1 and ds2.

Ds3 (only 2) seems to like his unsharpened pencil with a snowman on the end which he is calling his "Harry James Potter Wand)

TheUnmentioned · 26/12/2010 19:21

Oh and I forgot, best of all he has been playing for hours with the cardboard box from an amazon delivery and a mixing bowl on his head pretending to be a spaceman in a spaceship!

midnightexpress · 26/12/2010 19:28

Biggest hit here has been the marble run we got for ds2. Though unfortunately it looks as if marbles are to be this year's lego - everywhere: under furniture, strewn down the hall...

No real duds I don't think. DS1 got a great see-through clock that you put together and it works properly. It's fab, but he has pulled it apart about 5 times already, so if it's still working by Wednesday, I'll be astonished.

ragged · 26/12/2010 19:32

That's always the way, Unmentioned, the box is better than anything that came in it.

Duds: Star Wars Jedi game on DS. DS say's it's "broken" (translation "too hard").

: Pressure washer for me -- DH got this in 12 volt version, I would rather have one that runs off of mains. As long as he washes down the front walk I guess I don't care, but if I have to do it, I want to do it off mains!

Hits: Professor Layton game on DS -- initially this was also "broken" but once we solved a minor technical hitch (DS tried to write his numbers from bottom up) he's been addicted to it.

MerryMarigold · 26/12/2010 19:34

Hit - a little Tykes car from gumtree for 20quid. All 3 kids (5,2yr old b/g twins) LOVE it.

Duds - a baby alive doll that sucks on a bottle [from a friend]. Dd just not interested.

Semi-dud - imitation Playdough ice-cream factory from Smyths (own brand). I can tell it's not going to last long, and you can't do a lot with it. Not sure if the real Playdough one is any better or not.

MerryMarigold · 26/12/2010 19:38

Real Playdoh one looks lot better, but they had sold out Sad

tassisssss · 26/12/2010 19:47

ds (7) loves his sonic screwdriver and lego and how to train your dragon for the ds (bought in Sainsbos half price sale)

dd (4) is delighted with her playmobil and is LOVING the leapfrog TAG thingy with Diego and TInkerbell books

dd (2) is very hard to buy for...she adores her baby and bath set and the Vtech Camera is FANTASTIC, all 3 are loving it!
