Again, I'm asking for help. Do any of you have/or have had in the past, a romantic obsession or crush. I'm not talking about stalking or anything really crazy, just a passion for somebody - maybe somebody you know or a celebrity who you became obsessed with. Maybe the obsession had an impact on your real life relationship - ie your partner has got fed up with your going on about, say Robbie Williams or Brad Pitt. Just wondering what you got out of it and would you give it up for your man. I know someone who had a long-term obsession with David Essex. His face was on all the tea-towels, travelled miles to see him, joined the fan club etc, and her family were very tolerant!

Manfwood, if you like Jack Davenport go and see Pirates of the Caribbean. I must admit I did like him in This Life, all that arrogance! Not quite a full blown crush though. Anyway, the film's got Johnnny Depp too! And Orlando Bloom if you like 'em young. He has something of Beckham about him but he's a bit too young, even for me. The film is great fun anyway even if you don't fancy half the cast. Thoroughly recommend it.

fisil, Rowan Atkinson?!*

He looks like he's made of rubber!

tallulah · 30/08/2003 13:57

Many, many over the years. Currently Johnny Depp in Pirates of Caribbean mode; Sheriff Lucas (Gary Cole) from American Gothic and (sadly) Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter.... (I am SO jealous of his wife- I think I must be having a mid-life crisis.)

Tillysmummy - I've finally met another georgemichael freak!! (I'll fight you for him!)

I've always adored George Michael (and other celebs along the way) but he remains my absolute favourite. I'm sure he's gay because he hasn't met the right woman.

4Star · 30/08/2003 20:33

Have just registered for Mumsnet - first time I've done anything like it and my bath which I ran before I logged on is now cold as I've been glued to my screen. This conversation is the best of the lot - and more entertaining than waiting for replies to my questions about postnatal depression. I must add Colin Firth to the list again - I had a crush on him long before Bridget Jones! Also sad but true ...the son of Dick Van Dyke on Diagnosis Murder has IT even if he is called Barry.

wickedstepmother · 30/08/2003 20:48

Rown atkinson was GORGEOUS in Blackadder, the 'Queenie' ones with Miranda R, must have been a trick of the light though as I am yet to find him remotely attractive in anything since

wickedstepmother · 30/08/2003 20:50

Another George Michael vote here, but Robbie Williams ??? God, NO

codswallop · 30/08/2003 20:50

welcome 4 star.

wickedstepmother · 30/08/2003 20:52

Am also yet to see what the all the fuss is about re Brad Pitt. Ok, yes he looks young for 40 but he just doesn't have IT.

lou33 · 30/08/2003 22:12

WSM I agree. I think I like something a bit less perfect. Welcome 4star .

anais · 30/08/2003 22:49

Marthamoo, I had one of those crushes too - although I'm not going to say who on (spoilsport!!!). I found the diaries a few weeks ago and binned the lot. I was suffering from depression at the time, so the crush (or rather obsession) became a real crutch). I was in tears reading and remembering how miserable I really was.

Now I lurve Brad Pitt and Ewan McGregor - and various others at various times...

I am so glad I am not the only 'crush' freak. My DH finds it hysterical (although he doesn't know that one of my biggest crushes is on one of his closest friends!)
My first crush was on my brother's best friend when I was 11 and had just started secondary school. I had spent the summer playing cops and robbers, climbing trees etc with him and he had just been my brother's friend. On the first day of school he (was 2 years above me) came to find me to see if I was settling in OK and that was it. I couldn't speak to him for the next 6 years! When he came round for my brother I would go bright red and disappear to my room and fantasise about how he was going to declare his true love for me and we were going to elope etc! When he got older and had girlfriends etc I hated them with a passion ... when he went out with my best friend's older sister I was gutted and wouldn't talk to her either! He left our school (and our town) when I was 14 and I was heartbroken. When I was 17 he came back to work for the summer and asked me out ... we had a short fling over that summer ... and the crush died ... just like that!!! Don't know why ... he wasn't horrible or anything ... but I stopped fancying him!
My celeb crushes include George Michael ... sorry tillysmummy and susanb ... he is only gay because he hasn't met ME yet
Tom Cruise ... James Nesbit ... Aidan Quinn ... Robert Carlisle ... Mel Gibson ... Marty Pellow (that was a huge crush ... when he sang 'Angel Eyes' it was to me ) ... and I will confess I do have a soft spot for Ronan Keating - don't fancy him so much but his voice just makes me melt ...
My really big one at the moment is Simon Baker ... he is an Aussie actor that has made it big in the US and he is just to die for ... I watch "The Guardian" - the show that he is in - religiously every week and then dream about him that night ... DH thinks I am totally bonkers ... I tell him that I think he looks like Simon Baker ( he he he) just to make him feel better!
I love Simon Baker ... and I am sure he loves me.

Ailsa · 31/08/2003 13:45

Donny Osmond - adored him when he was in The Osmonds, and still adore him now. A close second is Richard Gere.

lou33 · 31/08/2003 14:08

Ailsa my sister is the same. She went to the tv programme "An evening with Donny Osmond" and managed to get a kiss from him! She said she will never wash that part of her face again.

I have loads of crushes, they get more as I get older. Currently after watching LOTR part 2 last night it's Viggo Mortensen, but only as he is in the film. Think he's horrible otherwise. Also am quite taken by Sean Pertwee. My list is too long to carry on. But, Custy, am right there with you about Justin Timberlake!

doormat · 31/08/2003 15:06

As you all know Sean Bean is the man.My legs go to jelly whenever I see him. yummy.
Also Wesley Snipes (esp in Blade films) is gorgeous.yummy
