Do you think it follows on from childhood?

Wht do you think when you meet a man with no nails?

Or chewed ones?

Or don't you think anything?

theres a question!, i guess if i saw someone biting their nails, id assume they were stressed? i bit mine as a child, but dm put a stop to it with stop bite..yuk!

mancmum · 12/09/2005 13:12

i still bite mine (aged 40) - am still hoping to grow out of it... I feel a real bond when I see a fellow biters hands!!

SleepySuzy · 12/09/2005 13:14

I bite my nails really badly. Any ideas to stop apart from putting something which tastes bad on them would be greatly appreciated!

Toothache · 12/09/2005 13:15

I would think.... oh look, that person bites their nails. Then I'd think about something else and stop staring at other peoples nails!

RTKangaMummy · 12/09/2005 13:17

DH does and it drives me up the wall

I might get some stuff to put on them

can you get stuff that tastes horrible but is not shiny

does it work?

I married a man like this! Yes he has done it from childhood and I don't think he will stop. Its the toe nails I can't cope with!. He gave up smoking for me so I don't think I can press him about this. DD1 started biting her nails so we had to talk to her about this and show her the damage that Daddy had done to his toes. The damage must be quite noticable because she hasn't bitten for 4 years now!

SleepySuzy · 12/09/2005 13:18

There used to be one called "stop 'n grow". It didn't work for me, but does for some.

SleepySuzy · 12/09/2005 13:18

Toenails?????!!!!!

Caligula · 12/09/2005 13:19

I think "ooh, what gorgeous nails I have, compared to you".

And I give a complacent smile and serenely decide to put some nail varnish on this evening.

And then at least one of the f**kers breaks.

RTKangaMummy · 12/09/2005 13:19

DH doesn't bite his toe nails

I am that adult. The only thing that stops me is having my nails done fortnightly. I start with some really short acrylic nails and then when my natural nail has been left alone long enough to grow I have acrylic painted onto them. Don't ask me why, but it's the only thing that works. The woman who does my nails comes to my house....

Tinker · 12/09/2005 13:19

I think that they obviously don't ignore their child(ren) often enough.

SleepySuzy · 12/09/2005 13:21

stop 'n grow

RTKangaMummy · 12/09/2005 13:23

is it shiny?

OP posts:
SleepySuzy · 12/09/2005 13:23

No, invisible.

Weatherwax · 12/09/2005 13:25

When I went to the chemist to see if they had any stop and go suitable for toddlers the lady in front told me not to waste my money as she (or her dd) loved the stuff! Some people have very different tastes!

acnebride · 12/09/2005 13:26

LOL tinker. I think that they should try a dummy instead.

SleepySuzy · 12/09/2005 13:27

I tried a dummy. Still didn't work.

Iklboo · 12/09/2005 13:30

DH is a nail nibbler, but he doesn't savage them - just kind of chews them down like a cut price manicure so his hands don't look bad. What annoys me most if HEARING him bite his nails. I sound like his mum 'stop biting your nails!' It's something he's done since he was a wee lad.
On the other hand (pardon the pun) one of our friends chews her nails down to the quick and it looks awful!

SleepySuzy · 12/09/2005 13:31

The more nail-biters are told to stop the more they will do it.

nightowl · 13/09/2005 03:55

i was walking through the shopping centre the other week when this man sprang out at me and grabbed my hand. i smiled sweetly (well sort of suspiciously i think). he asked to look at my nails (he was selling a rather expensive but very nice nail kit and doing demonstrations).but even so...i saw him recoil in horror at the state of my hands. (i had just been doing the garden and im a terrible biter, i dont bite my nails, just the skin).

bobbybob · 13/09/2005 04:30

Dh gave up smoking and his nails took the brunt of it - then we had ds and he stopped biting them. I have no idea why and neither does he, maybe he's calming - like having a cat. No wait we must be talking about someone else's child.

BusyBusyBee · 13/09/2005 08:26

Kanga I usually realise that they are mine and that they are at the end of my fingers - Its been like that since i was 8
