I nibble mine a bit, but worse is the skin around them. i have really improved recently though through conscious effort. I think sitting opposite someone on a train watching them bite their nails disgusted me so much that I imagined how I must look doing it. It is disgusting! DH reminds me everytime he sees me picking them or if I have my fingers anywhere near my mouth as i usually don't know I am doing it.
I think its a nervous thing.

I have been told that this is an offensive thread

So I really want to apologise to you all

It was to find out what others thought when they met DH

He chews his nails and fingers and I get very frustrated with him

I wanted to know what others thought of it and whether others had found a solution

I am really sorry I never inteneded it to be offensive

I wanted ideas and views so I could help DH to stop.

Please don't get angry with me

BTW since you asked - my nails are not long talons just regular length and I cut them with nail clippers

Please do not be cross with me

I bite mine, and I nibble the skin round them and pick at my cuticles!

Sheeeeeeet, my nails look gross, but it is healthier than smoking

Gobbledigook · 17/09/2005 21:47

RTKM - who said it's offensive??

Anyway, I bit mine when I was a child and used to get told off a lot for it. It did look horrible and sometimes my fingers got quite sore. In early 20's working in London, I home manicured and they were always beautifully polished. Enter children and it all went to pot!

Now I have acrylic nails and have them done every 2 weeks - they look fabulous and I think they look smart even when I feel like a wreck.

Flossam · 17/09/2005 21:51

I bite the skin around mine. Although never to the stage that it hurts. DP, does the same thing though, although never seems content unless he draws blood. He does a once weekly bite of his fingernails too, all in one go. Yuck. I hate hate hate the feeling of bitten nails.

RTKangaMummy · 17/09/2005 21:51

GDG I don't really want to start a fight or arguement but I was told on another thread that a member had found this thread offensive

SO I apologised on that thread and then thought I had better apologise publically iyswim on this thread in case others had been offended by it

I am sorry the title could be taken as me being rude

But it was really aimed at DH cos I wish he would stop chewing and picking them

I am a biter too - it's a horrid habit I agree, and I do wish I could stop. It's a completely unconscious habit too - I generally don't even know I am doing it. And it's worse if I am nervous or anxious. I have tried loads. Hate my nails and fingers. Need to do something drastic about it, not sure what.

Also agree it's a much nicer habit that smoking though too

SleepySuzy · 17/09/2005 21:57

I am not offended.

My nails are very badly bitten, and make my otherwise nice small hands and pretty ring look awful. I wish I could stop.

But...I'm having a shitty evening, and have been sat biting for most of it

dropinthe · 17/09/2005 21:57

Apology accepted RTM! Just got paranoid as have always had crap nails and I can't do anything about it-they just don't grow!

nannyjo · 17/09/2005 21:59

that person has a bad hanit of biting their nails..... don't we all have bad habits???

snafu · 17/09/2005 21:59

Why on earth would this thread be offensive? What is wrong with everybody tonight?

expatinscotland · 17/09/2005 22:00

I think, 'Oh, she/he bites his/her nails', and then it's a reminder to me if I rubbed in my Malava cuticle oil that morning.

whatsername · 17/09/2005 22:00

I don't think this thread is offensive...

I bite my nails, often till they hurt, and always have done. I have a dd who bites hers, which I hate, but all attempts to give up when I was younger failed, and tbh I don't care. I don't particularly like long beautifully manicured nails, but that's just me, I also have no objection to men with bitten nails.

RTKangaMummy · 17/09/2005 22:00

Oke doke thanks

TBH I don't notice other people's nails only DH

my mum bought just about every 'nasty tasting' stuff out there to try and stop me biting my nails - none of them worked - I 'adapted' so that I wouldn't taste the stuff

Have to confess I'm still a nail biter - but nowhere near as bad as I used to be. And usually it's when they get too long - as 'manicuring' myself was another on the long list of things (such as makeup and hair) which my mum wasn't good at, and never taught me how to do.....and didn't have any friends at the 'right ages' to be practicing those things to learn from).

QueenOfQuotes · 17/09/2005 22:04

just read the thread - and I also pick/bite at the skin around my nails too. They look horrible - just don't know how to make them nice

Linnet · 17/09/2005 22:21

I bite my nails, I always have done. The only time I've had lovely nails was when I got married I got false ones put of professionally and they were fantastic and lasted for weeks. Sadly I couldn't afford to keep them up so they had to come off and went back to biting them.

After dd2 was born my nails started growing at an alarming rate and looked really good. It must have been the hormones though as about 6 weeks later they all broke.

If I really try I can get them looking nice but they get to a certain length then they split and break. I have nail hardner that I use but I find myself nibbling away on a nail when I'm reading my book or watching tv so it never works for long.

Dh has lovely nails and so does dd1, I'm hoping that I'll grow out of biting my nails

weesaidie · 17/09/2005 22:29

I would think...

Oh my god, look at that fully grown adult who has bitten nails... how absoluuuuuutely disgusting! I mean raaaally, what is the world coming too? How crude, how crass, how utterly juvenile....

then I would go back to sucking my thumb.

SleepySuzy · 17/09/2005 22:29

lmao!!

QueenOfQuotes · 17/09/2005 22:30

ROFLMAO

steffee · 17/09/2005 22:32

I bit my nails from as young as I could remember until a year ago, when I stopped smoking. Somehow, without meaning to, I stopped biting my nails too. I then started smoking again, and started nailbiting again, but later figured if I had stopped before without intending to, it couldn't be that hard, and I was right! I just stopped. It's amzing how fast your nails grow, which gives you incentive not to start again...

I did start again but found it easy to stop, and have not bitten my nails now for a few months (still put my fingernails in my mouth occasionally and pretend to bite them, but don't) but couldn't help feeling it was such a waste when I had to cut them for the first time.

Dh bites his nails too, but I have never seen him do it, only his fingers look awful. He must do it in secret which I never did... urgh. Remember often biting my nails so far down they hurt and couldn't bite any further so had to pull the nail off which was very painful. (sorry if it's too graphic!)
