Nappy not changed for 7.5 hours

So i changed my 1 yo at 7.30 am and he went to nursery just after 8 am. He had a long day and we picked him up after 5.30 pm.

From the number of nappies used in the bag, the nappy logs on the app and the fact that he leaked wee through his clothes when they changed his soiled nappy around 3 PM tells me they didnt change him at all in the morning.

So from when he was dropped off he wasn't changed for about 7 hours.

What do you think of this and how would you handle it?

I wouldn't be happy at all but I'd also be 100% certain your facts are right before mentioning it, surely they all get changed at a set time? Could the leak have just been a dodgy fitting nappy?

Yes so we put a certain number of nappies in the bag and only 1 was used which matches up with what was on the app - 1 nappy change only.

I wouldn’t be happy with that and would be querying it 100% if you’re absolutely sure that’s what has happened.

Complain to manager and ask to see proof. Nurseries record all this as it is safeguarding, they will have a nappy sheet and a policy. Most nurseries change at set times but in a time frame of every 2-3 hours. However, if a child’s nappy is dry, they don’t have to change it but it must be recorded on their nappy chart. Also say you put x amounts of nappies in bag each day.

Every day Mumsnet cements my decision to never ever use a nursery, just a little bit more.

How many times a day do they normally change his nappy? I’d just ask them about it and see what they say

Well I suppose you're entitled to your view but at least with a nursery there is a way of tracking this stuff isn't there.

If you mean you'd use a childminder then this could happen too and if youd never use childcare well good for you but let's not make people feel bad eh

OP I would raise this with nursery it's absolutely not right

Surely Mumsnet would cement your decision to never have a child, or a relationship with any man, or a family if you just go on the negative posts? Why pick on nurseries above anything else?

Check with them.

If he’s older (so nearing 2) he may have been withholding urine and his nappy was checked before lunch and then after food and drink he urinated and opened his bowels in one go.

my DS certainly did that as he neared 2. He’d go from bone dry to it hanging around his kneecaps in about 20 minutes 🙄

That's useful to know about them having a nappy sheet too. Will see what their response is on drop off and then see about speaking to the manager.

Only twice in the day. Very occasionally they've used 3 nappies. It is supposed to be every 3 hours according to their policy.

This was one of my reasons for going with a nursery I prefer to track certain things and I'd hope nursery staff would hold each other accountable.

I worked in a nursery - babies should be changed (I believe?) 3 hourly and there's a sheet that must be filled in to say who changed them & what time. Usually at the end of the day (or week I really can't remember) they get put in a locked folder for the nurseries record. Ask to see it at drop off tomorrow and don't allow the staff anytime to add any extra changes to the sheet.

He is 1.5 yo. It is possible that he didn't wee much and then weed all in one go but he is a big boy and does make nappies very heavy quite quickly.

Have a chat with them.

It never ceases to surprise me how many people feel the need to check before having a basic conversation with the people their child spends hours with. Or those who think the immediate thing to jump to is complain to the manager.

Thanks for explaining. I don't think I'd be able to stop them or know if they add any extra changes if it kept in a different room.

It never ceases to amaze me how rude people are (jk it's mumsnet I expect this).

Also I try and be as measured as possible before jumping onto things so I find getting the advice of others helps me balance my view better. Also my child has only been at nursery just over a month so this is all new to me.

Yep I had to pull my child from her childminder for this very reason!
at least with nursery you get logs etc, I got nothing from a childminder.

I’d go in and suggest they sort their ideas out.
That’s disgusting, disrespectful and disappointing behaviour from staff being paid to look after a child’s welfare

Sometimes nursery use other nappies on my little one, despite nappies being in the bag. Could it be that?

Before jumping in with complaints, just have a chat with his key person or room leader and say you're concerned it seems his nappy change was missed yesterday morning.

It's not ideal but mistakes do happen.

So my child is in size 7 nappies in the baby room so there are defo no other babies in that size

Would be easy enough to check because the times will be different. For example, say 3 babies are changed at 10am, 10:05&10:10am, then again at 1pm, 1:05 & 1:10. It'll be in order on the sheet.

I wouldn't be happy at all and would consider changing nurseries, especially since it sounds like they are usually going against their changing policy anyway.

At DC's nursery, nappies are changed every 3 hours unless they have a dirty nappy before or if they are bone dry. If they are bone dry, this is recorded.

Ask about it tomorrow at drop off, speak to the room senior,

our children are changed at 10am, 1pm, then 4pm.

if a child is sleeping during nappy time then technically their nappy should be changed after they wake, however I’m sure sometimes this may get missed.
